Today's odds & ends
I know you guys already are talking about last night's school board meeting, which is great. Here is Jennifer's story from that meeting.
Also, 35 buses at Southeast Middle were vandalized early Tuesday morning. All but one are now back on the road, but the vandal or vandals did a lot of damage. It sounds like the GCS transportation folks did a good job of regrouping quickly to get kids to school as fast as possible.

That's really a shame about the buses. I'm happy that the damage doesn't sound to be too costly. I hope the vandals are found out and made to work at the bus garage--scrubbing the tires or something demeaning.

Sounds like a good idea to me. Hopefully, someone will step forth with some information that leads to an arrest.

An open letter to members of the BOE. Please excuse this letter being posted and not sent to you personally. Technical difficulties preclude that from happening on a timely basis.
January 11, 2006
Dear School Board Member,
It was my intention to speak to all of you Monday evening. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the meeting due to a conflict with my work schedule. I would like to share with you several points to consider as you move into the redistricting process. They tend to be simple, but definitely NOT easy.
1. Redistricting- If this needs to be done for the new Northern High School then it should be part of a county-wide process in 2006.
a. High Point Maps – Maps already exist for this area of the county. They are used daily, even today. They are the 1999 maps that are used if a student in 11th or 12th grade moves to High point or Jamestown. There is NO NEED to fall into the trap of believing that you need to vote on a motion to bring new maps to High Point alone. Any map should be part of a county-wide process that adheres to a philosophy identified in "b" below.
b. Neighborhood Schools- This is a position that deserves NO middle ground. Your position must be you are either for schools closest to home or you are in favor of busing for diversity. To say neighborhood schools are good for some schools but not for others is hypocritical. This is a COUNTY-WIDE school system, not a system of three municipalities (Greensboro, High Point, and Guilford County).
If you believe in busing for the sake of diversity, then ALL schools in the ENTIRE COUNTY should have a similar make up (the county average plus or minus 10%). This would include schools that heretofore have been insulated from county-wide plans (i.e. Northwest, Dudley, Grimsley, Southern, etc.)
2. Magnet/Option Programs- Numerous discussions continue around these programs without clear definition of what the objectives, quantifiable goals, or budget is for the overall program as well as the individual pieces. How you can keep spending money on new programs without clear definition as to measurable objectives, goal or budget is puzzling to most. It’s considered irresponsible use of taxpayer funds by many.
Suggestion: Place a moratorium on any new programs until an overall strategy and budget are developed.
3. Solutions
a. Leadership- Quality leadership has the ability to attract and retain quality teachers. Constantly moving principals leads to instability and lack of relationship/connection to the teachers/parents/students. Our best, most tenured principals should be leading our “at risk” schools.
b. Class Size- Reduce class size in “at risk” schools. Example: all College Preparatory classes in “at risk” high schools, a maximum of 20.
c. Teaching Supplements- Pay teachers a differential to teach at “at risk” schools.
d. School Supplements- Paid to “at risk” schools to support programs like those mentioned in b & c, but also for other basic and supplemental needs of the school.
e. Research Based Curriculum (RBC)- Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA) 2005 has recognized the profound improvement that a RBC approach has on children with disabilities. If significant advances are found with children with varying levels of disability, wouldn’t it seem logical to follow this strategy with our “at risk” students? This approach, as the name suggests, is research based. Many of the recent suggestions for improving schools (single sex, etc.) are theory based. Sure using RBC materials is more expensive, but many would find it alarming to know that a lot of the texts and curriculum in Guilford County is based on the cost of the textbook, NOT on the quality of the material. Veteran teachers can and often do, teach “around” the text. Most less experienced teachers RELY on the text. Could this be one of the reasons our rookie teachers find success difficult?
A Research Based Curriculum (RBC) that is requested by a student with any type of disability (as much as 15% of the GC student population) MUST be available to the student according to many associated with learning disabled (LD) students (based on IDEA 2005). Additionally, those schools within GC that already use RBC materials have shown significant growth with test scores. Why are we keeping this a secret? Is this a monetary decision? Guilford County PTA may be addressing this issue in the near future.
Many that have come before you in the past have been chastised because they are deemed complainers that offer no solutions. The purpose of this post is to offer solutions in addition to identifying current challenges.
My post will be dismissed by some simply because I am a parent. Some of you may dismiss my suggestions because we have had disagreements in the past. I hope some of you will bring up the points I have taken the time to research and document as REAL ISSUES with possible solutions that should be explored.
Lastly, I want to suggest that there is a HUGE TRAP that awaits many of you. I was lured into the same trap for two years while working through the redistricting process. PLEASE DO NOT believe that you need to make a motion or to vote on ANY map before you have defined how you will redistrict the ENTIRE COUNTY. If, as a board, you believe in schools closest to home, redistrict the ENTIRE COUNTY accordingly. If, as a board, you believe in busing for the sake of diversity, redistrict accordingly. NO EXCEPTIONS.
SIMPLE but NEVER EASY!
In closing, I respectfully request that each of you take the time to share with me your PERSONAL thoughts. If you aren’t comfortable putting your thoughts in writing, please feel free to call me .
Thank you in advance for your reflection and discussion,
Tim Mann

Okay I will have to say that there is scooping in Greensboro, not as large/great/severe as HP, but look at the map. The Northern Map looks like the US-- florida is equal to Brightwood.. The Rankin folks have been scooped for years- that might be changing. Both of these are for diversity, not closest schools. Not sure about the SE or Southern area.
Posted on January 12, 2006 2:42 PM
I thought Southern was a diverse high school. Maybe Truth can post the numbers again of the ratiios for all the high schools. Also what is considered an acceptable level of diversity?

SIMPLE OPEN QUESTION TO THE GUILFORD COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD:
What is the priority of the school board?
Is it
A: Diversity
OR
B: Neighborhood Schools
Please help me understand. You CANNOT have it both ways.
Posted on January 12, 2006 4:30 PM
How are we supposed to discuss these maps other than the neighborhood one? What can be said about them? Are we supposed to say don't screw me, screw somebody else? What possible case could any individual make for screwing some other person who has also suffered the last few years constantly and repeatedly defending against the absurd, shameful bounty placed on their child's head by crazed psychopaths who are supposed to be educators, because of the color of their skin or how much money dad makes. People who are guilty of nothing more than trying to raise decent children at a decent school and having the misfortune of settling in a place where our political leaders have become desperate and twisted enough to permit such a thing.
Note to schoolboard members. Before you vote "yes" on the final ransacking of SW Highschool, stop and think, would you have permitted such a thing to be done to your child's school? If not, you cannot. Just stop for a minute and think, do you really want this to be your political legacy in the annals of Guilford Co. politics? Please think what you are doing!

HAS THERE BEEN A GAG ORDER PLACED ON THE MEMBERS OF THE SCHOOL BOARD? PLEASE ANSWER:
WHAT'S THE PRIORITY???????????????????

Another open letter to the school board.
Dear School Board members,
I am an 8th grader at Southwest Guilford Middle schhool. I would like to know where I will go for High School.
Can you at least tell me when you will know this information? It would be nice to know so that I can start feeling like a high schooler.
Thank you.

The Northern "Florida" does not jump over a lake so it does not qualify to be a "scoop" it is more of a stretch and that is because it does have a clearly defined boundary as per GCS policies. A scoop in GSO would be doing something between Ragsdale and Smith or Southeast and Dudley or Grimsley and Dudley.
A stretch in HP would be more logical and acceptable. Give us a stretch instead of a scoop!

All,
Did anyone else fall off their couch/chair during the GCSB meeting when during the redistricting discussion, Amos Quick asked if there would be any "support" for schools gaining a significant number of FRL students and Grier answered with a straight face that of course there would be additional support.
Hello....
Am I wrong? I seem to remember that this past year the school board voted to take away Title I status from Smith, Dudley, Centeral and Andrews where federal funds are given to schools with a high percentage of FRL.
It's too much. They don't want the federal dollars if it makes them accountable for poor school performance to the extent that parents/kids can opt out of a continually under achieving school. But we can turn around and promise "support" for schools gaining FRL students? Would one member of the school board please email me their thoughts as I can't see through the political hypocrisy.

You might want to watch the meeting again. It runs on Friday night. I think Amos was saying would the students who are moving have community support once moved. Also would there be different issued to deal with something like that.
I think it was a question where Amos was concerned they were moving out of their environment into different communities.
I will have to watch it myself Friday.

John Stossel has an eye-opening hour on public schools -- "Stupid in America: How We Cheat Our Kids."
'Stupid in America'
John Stossel Looks at How U.S. Public Schools Are Failing Kids
Jan. 9, 2006 — - American students fizzle in international comparisons, placing 18th in reading, 22nd in science and 28th in math - behind countries like Poland, Australia and Korea. But why? Are American kids less intelligent? John Stossel looks at the ways the U.S. public education system cheats students out of a quality education in "Stupid in America: How We Cheat Our Kids," airing this Friday at 10 p.m.
"We're not stupid. & But we could do better," one high school student tells Stossel. Another says, "I think it has to be something with the school, 'cause I don't think we're stupider."
That's the question Stossel examines in his special report: What is it that's going wrong in public schools? There are many factors that contribute to failure in school. A major factor, Stossel finds, is the government's monopoly over the school system. Parents don't get to choose where to send their children. In other countries, choice brings competition, and competition improves performance.
Stossel questions government officials, union leaders, parents and students and learns some surprising things about what's happening in U.S. schools. He also examines how the educational system can be improved upon and reports on innovative programs across the country.

Bruce or Jennifer,
Do you have any info that translates the maps on the GCS website? any info on free/reduced numbers under different options? is this affecting only h/s now? middle schools also? where does proposal on Griffin becoming middle/high school stand?
Any info w/b appreciated. I no longer have access to cable channel 2 (switched to satellite TV), so I didn't see the board meeting. I know many people that would like to speak at the forum next week, but it's hard to speak when you don't understand the proposals.
Posted on January 13, 2006 9:29 AM
Bruce,
Any plans for the maps to be in the paper with all the impact number assocaited with each one? How can people attend the meetings next week when they havent had a chance to really see them? The whole thing is too rushed and there may be people affected by this that dont watch the board meetings. I guess they are hoping for low numbers at the forums.
Posted on January 13, 2006 10:14 AM
Bruce,
Please let us know if you can get copies of the maps.
It certainly appears that the board doesn't want the public to see the maps.
Posted on January 13, 2006 10:20 AM
Look at the numbers furnished above thanks to "The Truth". It proves that SW is, based on the actual ethnic proportions present in Guilford co., except for Page, the most diverse school in the county. It is diverse, for the same reasons Page is diverse, there has been no large scale mass defection and desertion by the non-minority students and their parents, a fact that will be drastically and irreversibly changed by the forced looting of SW High for purely perverse, partisan, political reasons. Why would any educating body that claims they want diversity now take steps to decimate what looks like their ideal school? There is no other answer other than politics. They are making a mockery of themselves.

I'm putting together a preview story for Tuesday's paper. Hopefully, that will at least let people know about the forums.
I do know this for certain: there are four maps under consideration at this point. That's what will be presented.
In terms of the maps, that's been frustrating for us as well. I'd like to publish as much as possible, but my main concern is getting it right. We would do far more harm than good if we published something inaccurate about redistricting. That actually happened in another local paper this week, not that it was entirely their fault.
I'm trying to track down those maps. I'm not sure if the current maps (i.e. the ones that will be at the forums next week) are all on the GCS website - that's one thing I'm trying to find out. If nothing else, I'll provide a link to those maps.
And again, we've had problems simply trying to deciper the maps that have been presented. They're extremely difficult to read - and I've heard that complaint from many other people.
So I can feel your frustration. I'm digging hard to get you as much information as I can. But please understand that my first goal is to get it right, even if that means I can't answer every question. I'd rather give you incomplete but accurate information than wrong answers.

Here is a letter that I sent to Dr Grier early this morning, he responsed almost immediately.
Dear Dr Grier,
At the Tuesday meeting Alan said that the new proposed maps would be available for the public. I believe he asked for them to available on Wednesday. It is now 3 days later and there is no convenient link on the website to view these maps. Again, the communication with the public is lacking. How can we make intelligent comments about something that we can't view until a few minutes before a meeting.
Please do something about this immediately. The meetings are next week and time is short. If you can't get the maps online, then use the interschool mail bags and have every school post each identified map so that the public will have an opportunity to view all 4 proposals.
Continuing with this topic, I believe that Anita asked for bussing costs and longest/shortest rides to be associated with her map. I don't think there as been any public discussion of these aspects of her motion. If so I didn't see anything about it, maybe I missed it.
Thank you
his response, was that Eric is working around the clock to do this, and 'frankly he is doing all he is capable of doing'
Now here is a good question. Did the maps change so much that he couldn't just move the lines and then print them. He alread had A and B-- I have no idea about C and D
Posted on January 13, 2006 10:54 AM
Debora,
According to today's High Point Enterprise, map "D" is the 1999 maps that most prefer!.. They are on the system currently. No "'round-the-clovk" work needed for that one!

Dr Grier has managed this Board like a pro. (oops, he is) His agenda (I can only guess) is served by last minute, hurried up information doled out in less that understandable presentation, allowing him to lead the Board by the nose. Nancy, Anita and Deena know this and it shows in their frustrated inquiry. But until the remainder know it, the game is all his. I suspect he has a couple of Board members that he has partnered with to allow him to manipulate the majority but will wait until the future to say...
This Administration should be transparent! Knowledge is freedom!
My favorite by Thomas Jefferson:
I have sworn eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man...
How can the Board make an educated decision on last minute information to affect so many? How can the public provide necessary quality input without time to research what they have been provided? Answer; depends on the result who ever provided the last minute info wanted.
There is a reason judges are skeptical about the introduction of last minute information or testimony. It is known to have the most effect on the Jury and it is the most difficult to vet.
Why last minute this whole process? Better control is the only answer. My question, who is really in control the Board or TG?
Posted on January 13, 2006 11:24 AM
Amy,
Yes, the maps affect the middle schools. The maps are supposed to be on the GCS website soon. They are extremely hard to read on line. Bruce said the maps are too illegible to print in the newspapers. But they will be printing a summary of Maps A, B, C and D in the paper.
There is a brief summary of the maps on page 6B of the HPE today correcting what they reported wrong yesterday on the front page.
Eric will give a brief summary of each map at the forums before presenting them.
The forums are this week Tuesday and Thursday.
Hope this helps.

BRUCE,
THANK YOU ALL YOU DO. The maps are so hard to read watching on television. It was obvious the school board was also confused.

Comment on maps and map making
Anyone should be able to come up with the right maps, clear and readable if they have access to the parameters that Eric has been given. Why is this not made public? Who set these parameters? Inquiring minds…
Anyone with this much control over the information has too much power!

Deb,
EXCELLENT POINT/QUESTION as usual. Maps A and B WERE the changed maps already from previous forums held in fall. I thought Anita made the motion that they would both basically be the same except for High Point so you are correct. Map C they had already. Map D they have already.
Regarding Anita's motion. Part of her original motion was to have the busing costs to see how they compared Neighborhoods schools to the "then current" school lines, inclusive of the High Point Lottery Plan. (Then discussion was tabled, etc.) Subsequently, after the Lottery was voted out in December, perhaps this is a moot point now? Her motion did say closest or next closest. But that depends on your STARTING POINT when you start mapping out lines. However, if we are to have a true neighborhood map vs county lines NOW in place, then part of her original motion WAS to compare busing costs. So shouldn't this be provided?? We heard comments from staff that this would give an overall picture of a Master County Map; that the process was worth it. We need a true picture to compare.
I vote Map D for D otty Motion - Map D for DAHHHH WHY, WHY, WHY did we go through all this for the past years? (we know why)
It is not about a few empty seats. We have empty seats all over GCS in empty buildings. There is no hour glass or stop watch that says this should be so rushed into at this time. This potentionally affects 4 YEARS OF THOUSANDS OF CHIILDREN AND PARENTS. It should not be rushed. It is sloppy, it is inexcusable to do this to parents and not give parents time to digest the data before they comment. The board is embarrassing themselves if this continues down the rushed path. I think most of them realize this. Kris C even said she couldn't comment if she didn't have any accompanying explanation of one of the maps.
So beside the maps, we each need to have an accompanying DESCRIPTION of how this affects the numbers. Only in this way can we all be on the SAME PAGE to comment on the same maps.
And just as a reminder (ref. Rhino Jan. 5th)with regard to the board's upcoming retreat and their goals....."the four goals, which each have several sub-goals are to continue to raise overall student achievement, IMPROVE DISTRICT, PARENT, COMMUNITY RELATIONSHIPS".....
How can they "improve district, parent, community relationships" if they aren't communicating? They are currently failing this goal already with this RUSHED redistricting map fiasco.
The last redistricting process took 2 to 3 YEARS. They are trying to do this in a few months (considering they started in fall), and now a FEW WEEKS without EVERYONE having the same information.
VOTE D for DOT MAP - HOLD THE LINES - DO NOT MAKE A MISTAKE AND RUSH THIS IMPORTANT DECISION - REDISTRICT HP WHEN WE HAVE NEW HIGH SCHOOLS. There is no high school for HP on the immediate drawing table. They are teaching on carts at Andrews. So where are the empty seats?
And as John pointed out SW is a PERFECT example of ideal diversity. It is time to get REAL and stop all the nonsense.
Only when they make a move to stop all this nonsense, can the repair of old wounds and the support of the community begin. It must start with COMMUNICATION.
Posted on January 13, 2006 12:49 PM
and p.s.
Free poor Eric from all this so he has time to start working on the budget, a budget that will allow money for cameras and heaters on our buses. Maybe the idea is if we freeze kids out they are too cold to misbehave.
The focus should be on Education not hiding, Safety in all our schools and on buses, and Accountability.
There's my soap box for awhile and not a campaign. I've ALWAYS been like this.

Attention Grier and School Board:
We are know at a point in time when a decision must be made for the future direction of Guilford County Schools.
A Vote for Neighborhood Schools countywide will start the HEALING PROCESS that GCS needs in order to move forward in a Productive Manner.
A Vote for Socio- Economic Experimentation for a select group of Students in the City of High Point will only PROLONG the Resentment and Hatred that many parents feel toward Grier and a Few members of the School Board.
Grier,,,do you realize how many productive citizens that you have alienated from helping the schools since your "Reign of Terror" in GCS began.
Do you realize how many Productive Families you have chased off to the PRIVATE SCHOOL sector???
Would n't it be nice if these citizens would start using their Time and Resources toward helping our schools instead of having to battle You and the school board in defense of our childrens rights????????????
At this Time,,I,,, The 14 Star General Slak of North High Point,,,,Respectfully request the Resignation of Dr. Terri Grier....Your effectiveness as a school Superintendent has ended,,,Just as it did in every other Job you were run off from!!!
Until this event takes place,,,Our school system will continue to Waller in Turmoil due to the Ineffective, Boneheaded Experiments that Grier
continues to RAM down the throats of the Fine Citizens of Guilford County.

"The challenges of EGHS are multi-faceted. Presently, EGHS has a diverse population of students---culturally, socioeconomically,
and geographically. EGHS is unique in that its students come from both rural and urban settings covering a vast amount of geographic distance. It is important to note that a large percentage of students attending EGHS do not actually live in eastern Guilford County. These students live in inner city Greensboro and are bused to EGHS in order to attend EGHS. The student population is approximately 975 with over 50 percent receiving free or reduced lunch. Over one-half (55%) of the population is minority – 7% Hispanic, 5% Asian, 1% American Indian, 40% African American, and
2% Multi-Racial.
Specific challenges include the great distance from home to school that creates a severe problem for many students with transportation for after school functions---both with students and parents."

Bruce,
What are the objectives of the redistricting?
I thought the whole reason that schools other than Northern were being re-considered was for the proposal to send students to their closest school.
Can we see their objectives, that is if they have any?
One change that I have researched was the change to send Bessemer Elementary children to Eastern guilford vs Rankin Elementary.

I have heard from a very reliable source that the GC BOE has already come to a concensus as to which map they will be voting in.
This is exactly the reason that Susan Mendenhall felt that forums were not necessary.
This is also the exact reason that the BOE didn't feel the need to listen to speakers at the board meeting on Tues.
Did you notice that Bernita Sims sat quietly in the audience and an official from the NACP was also in attendance but didn't feel the need to speak.
A deal has been struck.
Posted on January 13, 2006 1:49 PM
One of the problems with Eastern is that there is not enough population near the school and that with other schools be overcrowded=bus children to Eastern. This will change over the next 5 years and they are seeing alot of growth out in that area. Schools aren't built where they are need to be, but where land can be purchases. Sometimes growth happens right after a school is built, but that did not happen with Eastern
Posted on January 13, 2006 1:54 PM
Serious Concern:
Is it possible that a lot of small manipulative redistricting is occurring like middle schools and elementary schools that are being overshadowed and underreported in the news media while the High Point and Northern stories take top seed and all the heat? If only we could trust our district to keep us informed. Now where is that map posted again? www.900englishroad.com? My browser must be busted?

I hope you are wrong... but I do have a 100k or 2 for some serious full page work. Maybe this year we try TV, that hasn't been done for local school board here has it? Channel 8 would love it. How about Frank? Gee, I like innovations like that. Bonds? No Bonds... I hate to believe you are right. There are too many open minds still on the Board.

Posted on January 13, 2006 2:14 PM
Just heard from a realible source that Eric said the maps would be available online later this afternoon
Posted on January 13, 2006 2:21 PM
I heard that, too - from Eric himself.
As soon as we have something, I'll post it on The Chalkboard.

Delores, you don't mean another "sham" public hearing, do you?
Like all dumfounded parents, we'll all have to cling to the flotsam after the imminent destruction all around us, at the hand of Captain Ahab Kearns and her never ending quest for the "white whale". Our kids' educational futures sacrificed to this super-human obsession that threatens to consume all in it's path.
Another sham hearing =end to education in Guilford co. as we know it.
Call us all "Ishmael"!!!!

I also did not notice Mcleansville Elementary
on the map. Students from Gibsonville, Sedalia, and Mcleansville are most central to Eastern.
Aycock could be turned back into a true 6 - 8 "middle shcool" to ease any overcrowding that might be occuring within the Bessemer neighborhood.
Rankin parents can testify to how difficult it is to stay in contact with the teachers at Eastern when you live in Greensboro.

Frank,
Are you organizing a group of parents from your section of Guilford County to speak at the forums?
There is a North High Point Parents Association meeting scheduled for Monday, January 16 at 7:00 (new location) and we would LOVE to have our friends in the Eastern part of GC to join us.
We all believe the same thing and we must convey our message to the board.

It's difficult getting the word out to the Bessemer Elementary parents that Guilford County is planning on giving them Rankin's spot on our "cold" long bus rides.
Bruce or Jennifer we could use some help. The maps are not clear enough for everyone to see what the real hidden agendas are. I do not live in the Bessemer neighborhood and do not have access to these parents to get the word to them. If they do not want to be bused , they need to speak up....NOW.....
Hairston was just built and Lincoln has been re-opened. Poor planning and shame on the school board if building a brand new school in this neighborhood does not provide enough room for the neighborhood kids. Aycock is a magnet school and Lincoln contains the 4-5 VSN program.
Let's find out how many neighborhood kids are given spots in these two schools before we say we must bus because there is no room a mile from home.
According to the website, it looks like Hairston has less students than Eastern and they have the same exact buildings......
come on now ...do the math.
It looks like room was taken away from them, was this intentional.....

Proposed Redistricting Information
Board of Education to Host Public Forums on Redistricting
The Guilford County Board of Education will hold two public forums in January to gather community input on school redistricting plans. Each meeting will be held from 7 - 9 p.m. at the following dates and locations:
Community Forums for Discussion of School Redistricting Plans
Tuesday, January 17
Page High School
201 Alma Pinnix Drive
Greensboro, NC
Thursday, January 19
Providence Place
1727 Westchester Drive
High Point, NC
These are the maps that will be presented at the forums:
MAP A - This map is a culmination of all the maps that were presented this past fall with some additional changes. High Point changes include Southwest Middle and High students from the Florence Elementary attendance area to Welborn Middle and Andrews High. Students from the Blairwood area west of Oak Hollow Lake would shift from Welborn Middle and Andrews High to Ferndale Middle and High Point Central High. Andrews High students from south of Kivett Dr (and east of College Drive) would shift to High Point Central High. Oak View area students, east of N. Main St. would shift from Penn Griffin Middle and High Point Central High/Andrews High to Southwest Middle and High. Kirkman Park area students would shift from Penn-Griffin Middle and Andrews High to Southwest Middle and High. Middle school students from Shadybrook area and Oak View area, west of N. Main St., would shift to Ferndale Middle from Penn-Griffin Middle.
MAP B Star - This map is similar to Map A in that changes for new schools in the northern part of the county would be the same as Map A. In the High Point area, Map B would generally follow the map presented to the Board in November seeking to reduce the home to school distance taking into account school capacity, feeder patterns, and magnet school programs.
MAP C - This map was previously presented last August and later removed from consideration. At the January 10, 2006 Board meeting, the Board voted to reconsider this map. The map keeps existing attendance lines throughout the county but would “swap” students in some High Point neighborhoods. High Point changes include shifting Southwest Middle and High students from the Whites Mill Road and Penny Road areas to Andrews High and Welborn Middle Schools. In exchange, students from the Parkview Elementary School area and north of E. Green Drive would transfer to the Southwest school zone.
MAP D - This map reflects the current attendance zones for the county. For the High Point area, the lines would follow the 1999 Redistricting Plan adopted by the Board.

Sounds like some little gremlins have been playing on MAP A and that is why Eric is swamped. Who asked for and voted for these changes to MAP A in Board Meeting or is this another behind the scenes, unasked for modification slipped in by Grier's favorites?

Hello,
Southern is a very diverse school.
Mr. Mann is incorrect in his statement that it's not, but in defense of Mr. Mann, he did have a lot to say and probably overlooked this one point, we'll give him that one.

Math Lesson 6
CIRCLES
D = 2r
therefore
2r = D
2 different R edistricting plans are TOO many =
D for Disaster (NEIGHBORHOOD SCHOOLS or DIVERSITY)
Circle lesson: What goes around comes around.
No listening to the community - No school bonds

Bruce/Jen
Is Map A that was presented at the Board meeting the exact one that will be presented at the forums?

Delores,
the NACP folks were just as frustrated as everybody else who had a vested interest at the SB meeting. They shook their heads along with the "other side". They laughed and ridiculed Dot when the "otherside" did. We almost became best friends!
If there was a deal struck they would not of needed to be there and they should of been smug and not like everyone else.
Frustrated and pieeed off!
