« Board continues to tackle redistricting | Main | Redistricting - Live »

So, anything going on tonight?

Oh yeah - the Guilford County Board of Education is having a little meeting tonight.

The board met last night to discuss redistricting, in anticipation of making some decisions tonight. Board members got some answers to specific questions, but the bigger question - where to draw the lines - remains unanswered.

Staff members also introduced a fifth map for High Point last night - Map C*. This map would:

- Move the Parkview area from Andrews to Southwest;
- Move the Blairwood area from Andrews to Central;
- Move the White's Mill Road area from Southwest to Andrews.

I doubt you will see many unanimous votes tonight. In fact, it'll be interesting to see if the board can even reach an agreement on some of these hot topics, like High Point (obviously) and what to do with the Rankin kids.

Believe me deals for HP have been made behind closed doors. The meeting tonight is just for show.

Psssttt....Hey, Gringo....Welcome to Tijuana. You ever been to "donkey show"?? You like it, guarenteed, Gringo. Tonight only, gringo. She sweet little girl, gringo. I could tell you she my sister, but that much too cliche'. Ha, ha, maybe she your sister, gringo. Her only crime, being at the wrong place, at the wrong time, in the wrong town. Such is life, gringo

You forgot one map, its the one where as many NHP and Jamestown parents as possible move to private schools. This map involves a massive lane widening of Hwy 68 and a toll booth where Mayor Becky and Aunt Dottie restrict traffic movement into and out of old High Point.

Wesleyan is adding a wing to their building and HPCA advertises on TV now. Plenty of choice seats in all grades available.

In case any readers out there have any doubts about HPCA it has its first graduating class this Spring and already has seniors accepted at NC State, UNCG, UNC-Charlotte, HPU, and Gardner Webb among others. There are already IB kids at Central that carpool with HPCA kids so transportation is not an issue.

Also I know of many recent IHM parents who are happy with their decision.

I'm with "Whatsgoodforone", the decision has already been made and tonight is just for show. Lots of sad faces by Board Members about how tough the decision was, but it takes leadership. A few token head bobs for good measure.

I predict an unpopular vote of 7 - 4, just like the HP Lottery vote. Three of the 4 NO votes are predictable with either one or two people looking to save face politically, so the vote might even be closer at 6 -5.

To those Board Members who cast this unreasonable vote tonight, I say go ahead and choke on your free and reduced lunches.

I can't wait until Dot herself cuts the ribbon on the new "Dot Kearns Wing" at Wesleyan. It will be like old times, Dot up front mumbling, us in the audience staring in wonder and admiration.

Bruce or anyone

what was said last night about a future school for ESOL?

where? what grade levels?

That idea has been floated before. The concept would be a "welcome center" of sorts where immigrant students would spend their first year or two in America. There, they would get intensive English lessons, then move on to a regular school once they get more proficient in English.
