Are smaller schools better?
Lindalyn Kakadelis, who I interviewed for the redistricting story, sent me this interesting piece from the Gotham Gazette. I thought some of you might like to read it.
A New York City teacher and an author/New York Times education columnist talk about the system there and the policy of breaking down large (2,500- to 4,000-student) high schools. They also touch on some other topics, including racial segregation/integration in relation to education.
Check it out. Let me know what you think.

The lady getting interviewed contradicts thethinking of our resident educational geniuses like Terry Grier, Deeena Hayes, Marti Sykes, Kris Cooke and Allen Johnson who claim diversity is important by saying diversity is "not even relevant". She also made several other observations that we know can't possibly be true like community-elected boards are "real sinkholes of corruption"which directly contradicts our experiencewith the fine public servants we have on our schoolboard here in Guilford co. She claims that "shipping the detritus of one school to another school like we do here can be "destabilizing" and bad which also contradicts our thinking here. I would say the lady interviewed is just some city slicker who deoen't know what's she's talking about.
Ms. Fernandez, please remove this articl immediately.

I second that, Guilford Granny! I read enough about corruption these days. Please don't import more from Gotham.
Golly Batman! We were almost BAMBOOZLED!!!

This might be off topic, but does anyone have any personal stories about the SCALES school? Has anyone had a child there?
Do you think it is safe?
And have you or anyone else you know had a child sent there because they finally retaliated against chronic bullying?

From Jennifer's story today on redistricting:
"But Chairman Alan Duncan said board members have repeatedly answered that question.
There are several reasons, including underused space at the High Point schools, that is not a factor in Greensboro schools, he said.
Parents often recommend using Northwest High as part of redistricting Greensboro schools for better diversity. But distance is a factor, Duncan said."
Let's dispell the space issue as a factor, as if you redistrict in Greensboro, you are just redistributing the same number of students among the various schools. More or less space is not an issue. It's the same number of students before and after.
Let's stop this charade, once and for all, perpetrated by Alan Duncan and the Greensboro school board members that forced busing and integration can't be done there because distances are too far. I believe that all reasonable people would agree miles driven are not as important as driving times? Miles don't matter to students as much as time riding on the bus.
According to Mapquest.com, the driving time from Southwest to Andrews is 15 minutes, and the school board selected the Parkview neighborhood to be sent to Southwest, and this neighborhood is far beyond Andrews, so the actual time would be closer to 20 minutes or more, but that seems to be acceptable.
Now, let's consider Northwest and its driving time to Dudley and Smith. Northwest to Smith is 21 minutes and Dudley is 25 minutes. Of course, some Northwest neighborhoods are closer to Greensboro than the actual school (Andrews). So, at what point is the distance too great for a redistricting of Dudley or Smith with Northwest? Is 20 minutes too much? Alan Duncan, let's stop this charade. Neither you nor the other Greensboro school board members want to integrate Greensboro schools. You supported the forced busing in High Point to satisfy Dot Kearns and the Central High crowd.
Jennifer, I challenge you, and your editorial board, to push back on Alan Duncan and others when they make this bogus argument about the impossibility of integration in Greensboro because of far distances. Everyone is saying that integration of schools in the county is needed, but it needs to be done districtwide. I agree, so let's do that. Let's either integrate the entire county, regardless of obstacles, or stop it in High Point. If we really believe that education would be improved by forced integration, then let's get on with it and overcome the obstacles, ince and for all. Otherwise, it's just worthless babble.

If the children at Smith and Dudley are going to be "saved" by kids from someplace else, then I say no distance is too great. That the members of the board would deny these kids opportunity because of a few extra riding minutes is a disgrace. Let's get it done!
Posted on March 23, 2006 9:29 AM
Stormy,
I totally agree.
Lets say 1600 at Dudley 400 bussed.
1400 at Page.....400 bused.
Total at Dudley 1600, Page 1400.
I really am sick of this BS!

Terrina,
I think that Alan Duncan needs to attend the "Scale School",,,because of his "Chronic Bullying" of the Students in High Point.

General,
I swear, as I read your post I could hear the Battle Hymn of the Republic playing in the background! You sir, are a GREAT AMERICAN! Keep up the fight.

Now that it's becoming more obvious that the High Point thing was never about diversity and anybody that believed that has been had, it's time to talk about the real issue of why n. HP people (particulary men) are so angry. LACK OF CONSORT. If there is anything like the prospect of having junior kidnapped and spirited away from a school where you've been reasonably happy(not to mention put the Mrs. to work to pay the 200+K morgage on a house close to the school) and instead sent to a school rated as second worst in the state that is being run by a state intervention team (AKA Force Ten from Navarone)that cools things off upstairs, this observer has not seen it. Take it from me, nothing puts a woman in the mood like reading in the paper about the latest incident- like faces getting slashed with a razor blade, at her progeny's new institute of higher learning.
AT BREAKFAST:
MOM: Son, what's that thing on your face?
SON: Nothing, mom
MOM: The razor blade again?
DAD; Will you settle down.
MOM: Don't tell me to settle down...
DAD; Was probably an accident. Dr. Child's said things are turning around...
MOM: You...what do you know...
DAD: Honey, put the knife down...Come on...
Does the schoolbaord even care? What do you think?

17-Star General,
Here...TAKE IT...*
It's your 18th Star. Keep up the good work, man.

THIS BREAKING NEWS JUST IN FROM THE CHARLOTTE RHINO:
BREAKING NEWS from Charlotte Rhino Times
By Mark Pellin, Charlotte Editor
Guilford County Schools Superintendent Terry Grier is in the running as one of the finalists that the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education chose to fill the district’s top spot, according to a comment by a school board member.
In an interview, a CMS Board of Education member expressed doubts about whether one of the finalists the board member favored would be chosen.
“I wonder if I should give him a call?” the board member asked. “Is it a long distance call to Guilford County?”
Grier has been superintendent of Guilford County Schools since 2000.
The search firm the CMS Board of Education hired to facilitate its superintendent search was to begin a process of calling finalists to see if they were still interested in the position, Board Chairman Joe White said on Wednesday. It was unknown as of Thursday afternoon whether the firm had contacted Grier.
During a Thursday morning press conference, CMS Interim Superintendent Frances Haithcock said she had not been contacted with any notice of whether she was a finalist. The Charlotte Observer reported Thursday that Haithcock had confirmed she was one of the semi-finalists the school board interviewed during a round of closed-door meetings earlier this week at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport.
Grier has drawn mixed reviews during his tenure at the helm of Guilford County Schools. During his five years, the district’s dropout rate has been cut in half, from 6 to 3 percent, according to the district’s website, which hailed Grier as an innovative leader who had, “championed parental and student choice by expanding the district’s magnet school program.”
Last year, Newsweek magazine’s Challenge Index ranked all 14 of Guilford County’s traditional high schools in the top 4 percent of schools nationwide that offer AP and IB programs.
At the same time, however, only 58 percent of Guilford County schools met state test score goals for 2005 ABC report cards, down from 66 percent the previous year. And the percentage of schools meeting federal Adequate Yearly Progress fell from 78 percent to 58 percent.
Two Guilford County high schools were among 19 across the state, including four in Charlotte-Mecklenburg, which Superior Court Judge Howard Manning recently threatened to close if academic achievement didn’t improve.
And one group of Guilford County parents will be pleased to learn that Grier is interviewing elsewhere. For the last two years, there has been an active and vocal contingent of parents in Guilford County that have pushed to have Grier fired. The group, among other tactics, has distributed bumper stickers that read “Get Grier outta Here” and “I’ve been Grier-ended.”
Grier was paid $210,500 as Guilford County’s superintendent and has a contract that runs through 2009.

Listen,
that is generous!
Posted on March 23, 2006 5:51 PM
Can we work Dot into the deal? Or what about Cooke?
Posted on March 23, 2006 6:06 PM
Did someone pull the plug on the school board meeting??????
Posted on March 23, 2006 6:19 PM
Grier has resigned?
Posted on March 23, 2006 6:35 PM
No, Grier hasn't resigned..he's just job hunting while he screws our schools royally!
He is doing what he does best!--makes a mess and then bails out. He's interviewing with the Charlotte system and the man should NOT be in the business of education at ALL!!!!!!!!!
He'd make a great used-car salesman!
The sad thing is, Charlotte knows he's an idiot and they aren't going to hire him so Guilford county is going to be stuck with him.
Why do we want a super that doesn't even want to be here?
GET HIM OUTTA HERE!!!!!
Posted on March 23, 2006 6:51 PM
I'm watching the board meeting and I love the speakers that speak out for Dudley. They emphasis that they believe that Dudley's students should be supported AT Dudley. Not one person has requested that their Dudley student be bussed across town to be educated.....
....man! .what a concept..Dotty, Marti..Walter....Deena, Kris..are you listening????????
CHILDREN CAN LEARN WHERE THEY ARE!!!!!!
Posted on March 23, 2006 7:01 PM
"we try to be responsive to all speakers concerns"
a direct quote from alan duncan from tonight's meeting.
I'm going to go throw up now.
Posted on March 23, 2006 7:11 PM
Grier speaks for the first time at the board meeting tonite..(are you suprised that he's asking permission to steal more money from Jamestown?) anyway...I wonder if he's feeling somewhat weasel-like knowing that he's trying to get hired in Charlotte while he speaks..what a slimeball..
WAKE UP SCHOOL BOARD..HE'S JUST WAITING FOR THE BUY-OUT.
WRITE THE CHECK!!!!!!!!!
Posted on March 23, 2006 7:14 PM
The Edward R. Murrow name was shot down by a vote of 6-5.
Sorry Joe
Posted on March 23, 2006 7:58 PM
Now - you're not going to believe this. My friend from Charlotte just called - wants to know if anyone has anymore "Get Grier Outta Here" magnets - she wants to start handing them out now.
Anybody know where I could get a few???
Posted on March 23, 2006 9:03 PM
"Get Grier Outta Here" magnets are export ban list to Charlotte.
Guilford County is only sending letters of recommendation to Charlotte at this time.
Posted on March 23, 2006 9:30 PM
I've already faxed over my letter of recommendation. I highlighted Grier's many special talents and innovative thinking, his vast knowledge of transportation, his ability to take a problem and make it just disappear and his absolute most wonderful ability to make money reappear at will.
I've assured Charlotte-Meck that they will NOT be disappointed in their decision to hire Grier. ..just keep him away from children and matches.
Posted on March 23, 2006 9:42 PM
No Magnets, no signs for Charlotte. At least until they have him, then I will be very happy to send the garage full of SOS signs I have down to them.
DId anyone notice how all the board members are sucking up to Amos and Dudley? What about Smith? Hasn't Deenha got anything to say about those kids at Smith? Or does she have another agenda?
I dont think either Andrews or Central received this type of support either.
It makes me want to puke!
Posted on March 23, 2006 10:37 PM
Hammer will be on WGOS-1070-AM from 9-10am Friday morning - I will be listening for the latest Grier-CMS scoop!
The school board didn't bother with it tonight - more important things than the superintendent leaving?
Posted on March 23, 2006 10:50 PM
"SUPER" ain't going NO WHERE. NO ONE would want him. ONLY Guilford County Board of Ed. is stupid enough to hire a loser.
This is another of his tricks. He's got LOTS of tricks. He's a pro. He's got a plan. He's expecting a little incentive to stay...but no plans for gettin' outta here.
Sorry if I'm bustin' any bubbles but the sleezeball is here to stay.
Posted on March 23, 2006 11:34 PM
Quick!! Someone get me an address so I can write a letter of recommendation!!!! Did anyone see the FOX8 interview? The reporter asked him if he was a finalist and all he would say was "I saw the same website you did." And then she asked him if he applied and in his smug way he said "I've already answered that." Smiling all the way. What's that song by the Temptations??
"Smiling faces sometimes pretend to be your friend
Smiling faces show no traces of the evil that lurks within
Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes
They don't tell the truth uh
Smiling faces, smiling faces
Tell lies and I got proof
The truth is in the eyes
Cause the eyes don't lie, amen
Remember a smile is just
A frown turned upside down
My friend let me tell you
Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes
They don't tell the truth, uh
Smiling faces, smiling faces
Tell lies and I got proof"
PERFECT!
Posted on March 24, 2006 5:28 AM
If the Guilford county board of education has even ONE ounce of concern for the kids in this county, they will begin their search, TODAY, for a new superintendent.
After hearing that Charlotte-Meck turns down this skillful liar and decent/con-artist, they need to hand him his walking papers.
SCHOOL BOARD, HOLD AND EMERGENCY MEETING AND GET THIS SWINDLER OUTTA HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted on March 24, 2006 8:06 AM
Again, I watched the entire board meeting last night. Again, NOT ONE SINGLE DISCUSSION ON EDUCATION!!!!
Posted on March 24, 2006 8:26 AM
Hey Jenn, please tell Allen we're sorry, but it doesn't look like there was any impetus on the board at the meeting last night to follow his editorial advice and diversify the Greensboro schools. Tell him not to lose heart. I'm sure at the next mtg. they'll take care of this. Tell Allen if he wants us to start a letter writing campaign to get this done we can do that.
