$ign of things to come?
Charlotte-Mecklenburg's superintendent has submitted her budget for 2006-07.
It includes cuts of about $9 million and a request for $31.8 million more from county commissioners. Some of the areas targeted for the extra money:
* $4.9 million for teacher and administrator recruitment and retention incentives.
* $2.2 million to decentralize the district into smaller regions.
* $2.2 million to address equity in funding through a new weighted student staffing model.
* More than $837,000 to address safety by expanding the academic truancy/suspension centers and Positive Behavior Intervention and Support programs.
Is this a sign of things to come in Guilford County as the district here prepares its budget for next school year?
The superintendent has until May 1 to give his version to the school board. However, last year, he turned it in about three weeks early.
County commissioners have asked to get the school budget earlier, although legally it is not due to commissioners until May 15.
As school officials look at the budget, where should they cut, what should they add?

Very interesting, they are making cuts from Fed/state (I assume these are not by choice, but lack of funding) and requesting more from local funding. Wonder what cuts they will make if they don't get it.
Did anyone notice the "decentralize into smaller district" aspect? That would bring us back to why did we go into one large system here. If HP is different than Greensboro and the cities are different than the county, what gives with consoladation?
MY guess is that our budget will have lots spent for lowering class size in HS, more teachers, more to work in high impact schools, less for TA's, less for supplies. Even through the Judge said it was leadership, not lack of money that could make the difference, our BOE will throw money at the problem without finding out how these kids got to HS without being able to read.
How many people failed EOG's? How many did they retain? Wasn't it just one? Let's not hurt anyones' feelings? Just pass them on, and let the next teacher figure it out!

Suggested cuts:
Statistician -$181,000 plus benefits
PR person to spin county errors $100,000+ +benefits
Asst. Superintendent that does what the superintendent should be doing (instead of pursuing outside paying gigs) $150,000+ +benefits
Let's see that's close to $500,000 and we haven't negatively impacted a single educational program!
That's just the start! Any more suggestions?

$500,000 for racial healing water for questions ministry
Buy the movie "Crash" instead

Surely other $60,000 is wasted somewhere else
What the heck does Asst Super do anyway?
Outside exuberant consultant fee for "experts"
What does Asst Super's wife do? How much does she make?

Yes the marketing has begun. GCS still wants to take the bond money from Jamestown Elementary. It seems the N & R editors approve of this.

"Why yellow buses?"
Yeah, why not black limos?
What's the question, really: is it beneath athletes to ride a yellow bus? Give me a break.
