Redistricting presents hardships for poor

Sorry, I'm just getting around to posting Sunday's story on redistricting. Thanks to Jonathan over at the North High Point and Jamestown blog for posting it earlier.

This week I'm shifting gears back to Dudley and Smith for some stories that likely will run later this week. I'm hoping to look at how communities are rallying around these schools to help and see what's up with the state assistance teams promised by Gov. Easley back in August.

I believe that Kris, Deena and Walter were led down the garden path on this one. Diversity Dot and her lobbying machine got the better of them.

This is merely more proof that nobody wants this.
Grier meanwhile is laughing all the way to the bank.

"The Grace period has run out"

When will the Dot period run out?

I swore I would put down my keyboard until I read what Dr. Childs had to say in this article yesterday.

It's interesting he is all for getting the churches involved to solve the transporation issue. When are issues in conflict of the separation of church & state and when aren't they?

If Dr. Childs would also support putting the Pledge of Allegiance back in the Guilford County Schools, then maybe I could meet him half way.

NoCommonSense said:

Great point Mountainman. What about the ten commandments hanging in public places. What's the latest on that.

Even if the churches do provide transportation, how long will that last?

Call Dot said:

Call Dot. That does not stand for Department of Transportation. I think every school board member who voted to send these children to Southwest with no transportation should forfeit their school board salaries and donate them for cab fare.

The City of High Point could donate the market shuttles. As the market keeps going to Vegas they won't need these as much either. The High Point leaders supported this busing of students. They need to contribute too.

VivaLaFrance said:

Make sure all the poor FRL students have French Fries. That will make Kris happy. As long as they all get French Fries like the other kids at Southwest, this should make the long bus trip worth it. No ketchup though. There's no money left for ketchup after you pay for the gas.

I opened the High Point section of N&R today, pg. B3, and read about the lady who thinks she is "The Messiah" who is charged with enslaving several people. I thought, "I know this woman".
Reading on, I read where she imagined herself also as several "Indian chiefs". I thought... yeah, and then it hit me; that would explain yanking the Southern Guilford mascot. Then I saw where she is "at large". I was right on the phone to SBI. Hope the guys in the whitecoats can get this lady back to Kansas.

Again, thanks again Jenn, for the excellent story on Sunday. I believe Vicki Alston when she says she consulted people before selling Parkview down the river. She talked to her husband and Walter Childs. Allright, maybe to Emma too. Let's cut the lady a break.

TaintedGlasses said:

Sounds like the High Point NAACP letterhead list of officers, View. High Point black citizens just has the wrong "Alston" in their corner.

Touting said:

I read on some letter to editor comment that SW should be "touting" what they need. (He probably wasn't thinking along these lines but....) I have come to a conclusion after attending several sports functions at Grimsley, Northwest, Western, Page, etc., we could sure use some darn TENNIS COURTS.

We have to go far of campus at at Cedarwood private courts and Jamestown Park to play our home games. We go office campus and split the games between TWO locations.

A SWIMMING POOL would have been a nice addition for our champion swimmers. They have to go to Smith or Grimsley to swim.

That's right. I forgot. High Point IS DIFFERENT.

Jennifer,

With all sincerity, what do you think High Point folks can do to help the Parkview families with these hardships?

RE: Magnet Open Houses

My friend just told me she attended Central's Open House this past Sunday. She found out about this at the recent Magnet Fair. The presentation lasted about 2 hours. The principal was there. She and her daughter felt very welcomed. They left with a ton of information about the IB Program. There was a good "presence" in the school.

Now this same person attended the Andrews "Open House" (notice the quotes as I say this lightly) on Saturday, March 4. She also had learned about this "Open House" at the same Magnet Fair. The "Open House" was from 10 - 12. They went with an open mind to see for themselves.

When she and her husband arrived at 10:20, the doors of the school were LOCKED. They saw two students peaking out the window who got an adult to let them in. The principal of the school was NOT there. The Early College Academy Director for Central and Andrews was there. Two technical teachers were there and another staff member. They were in their office. I think she said there were some unopened donuts because she didn't see any other parents. A few other parents were coming in as they left. Someone sought out one of the teachers who answered some questions. Her husband's comments after he had left was he "felt like he had been worked over by a used car salesman". It was so unlike the Open House at Central. (You can't blame the teacher for trying.)

(Also as a side note the Mr. Parker, the Principal at SWH always has a presence: at football games, PTA, open house, honors functions, sports banquets.)

If Andrews has changed as Walter Childs stated. If they are really trying to attract people to this school, why wasn't the open house publicized more? Why were the doors locked? Why didn't even the principal show up? What message does this send about how hard they are really trying to turn things around?

I've heard that Grimsley's pool is going to be renovated and resurfaced starting next week. Anyone know where the money is coming from to do this?

I would think that would be a pretty expensive project, depending on what the "renovations" include. I'm not saying it doesn't need it, just wondering if this has anything to do with bond funds.....

Any word on this Jennifer?

jennifer fernandez said:

anotherquestion,

I have not heard anything about the Grimsley pool being renovated. Grimsley received work in the 2000 bond, although I'm not sure if this was part of it and was just getting done now.

The athletic boosters could be a source of the money or it could just be an expense taken out of the school's athletics department budget.

Serling Fan said:

It would be great to actually have athletic boosters, I mean, actually have the athletic boosters next year not removed off to some other school. How envious we are that schools like Grimsley and Page can have constancy and tradition and stable base of support-all the things which a school needs to thrive, and have this all removed when your school happens to be in Dot World.

swimmom said:

The city of Greensboro owns and operates the pools at Grimsley. The money to re-furbish the pools would come from Greensboro Parks & Rec budget since these pools are owned by the City.

The money to build the pools at Grimsley and Smith was donated by Greensboro Swimming Association (GSA) and both the City and GSA have a long-standing working relationship that help to promote the sport of swimming to citizens.

I guess in Hell Point and Dottywood which are both in the solar system of the Twilight Zone, the millionaires only donate money to High Point University after they die. Of course the millions were all made off the furniture industry when they had the pool of factory workers who could not read.

Our children like to swim too even if they can't read.

jennifer fernandez said:

Swimmom,

Thanks for the info.

Do you have kids in school that are swimmers? I've been to swim meets at some of the city park pools but not at any of the high schools.

My younger cousin, who also is my goddaughter, swims like a fish. I count myself lucky that I can float long enough to be rescued!

gsowannabe said:

I'm so jealous of GSO people. They get their pool fixed without having to swap stadiums for busses! Lucky Greensboro! They really are different aren't they?

HP town said:

gsowannabe

don't forget you get the busses with less heat too being further "south"

swimmom said:

Jennifer - yes, I have school age children who swim. One swims year 'round for GSA and she and her older sister both swim for their high school(that doesn't have a pool). My youngest is still learning to swim, but wants to swim year 'round soon.

Actually, Grimsley only hosts one year 'round age group meet per year. The facility is not really conducive for big meets (not enough deck space) and other teams from around the state say the pool is "slow". However, Grimsley does hold high school meets as well as Masters' meets. Smith also holds high school meets.

Unfortunately, the Triad area as a whole is not well-equipped for the sport of swimming. Pools in this area are in high demand. Other cities in the state have a variety of pools and therefore seem to have more swim meets.

I could go on and on, but this is an educational forum, not a swim facility forum. My original post was just to clarify that the work that's going to be done at Grimsley is NOT being paid for by GCS since the pool is not theirs...

Did anyone see Fox 8 last night? They had a part about Dudley on it. How the school was reacting to being labeled as a low performing school. The students are determined to overcome this.
You know what this is? This is another sign of a strong Board member. He believes in these children, the rest of the board is inspired by this and believes in them too. The press starts to believe it. I am not saying its all over but that is half the battle there.

Congrats to Amos Quick. He is not leaving it to Grier.

Where is the Smith member? Probably too busy thinking how they are all being discriminated against to do her job!

Frank said:

Jennifer,
I have not seen a response concerning why the district is paying a "select" number of students to
re-take the SAT that will be paid for with Guilford County funds.

Rip Van Winkle said:

Frank, one can only hope you are a patient man.

jennifer fernandez said:

Frank,

I'm doing the best I can to answer everyone's education questions (which I get by phone, e-mail and the Chalkboard) and the demands of my editors.

Remember, it's a one-woman show here right now and I just can't do what two people did.

I'm trying to focus on stories about Dudley and Smith right now.

I'll try to get an answer to the SAT question when I can.

Bo said:

Frank, go ask your high school principal. They all did this and if they deny it's just to cover their butts.

Frank said:

Jennifer,
Can you start a strand on this?
Is it to raise the scores for the students, the schools, the system, or to help Grier meet his performance objectives. How much has the school board agreed to spend on this project?

Readers,
Every high school in Guilford County has probably asked certain students in the senior class to re-take the SAT and have been offered to have it paid for by Guilford County schools. At our schools the top performers were targetd, but to no real benefit to them since the majority already knows that they are accepted in college and these scores will be of no help to the students.

Can you help us answer this question?
Which students were targeted and how many?
Does anyone know why?
What is your principal's tale?

Eastern Guilford - offered to entire class
100+ * 40 = 4000 dollars

Grimsley ?
Page ?
Dudley ?
Norheast?
Northwest?
Southeast?
Andrews?
Central?
Southwest?
Ragsdale?
Smith?
Southern?
etc.
