Charlotte picks Gorman

Our neighbors to the south have picked their new superintendent, according to the Charlotte Observer.

Peter Gorman, superintendent of the Tustin Unified School District in Orange County, Calif., will lead Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools. Well, once they negotiate the contract, that is.

Guilford superintendent Terry Grier, who made it to the top three in the national search, dropped out of the race last week.

Who wouldn't pick Mr. Gorman if they had the chance? The lady that Charlotte rejected would be several rungs up the ladder for Guilford County.

But we have Dr. Grief (that lady from Akron's name for him, not mine) he is going show everyone in Guilford County how he treats them when he has the present School Board bent over and in a prone position.

It seems as though once again, Charlotte wins out over the Triad in its Progressive decision making,,,,,,

The Queen City chooses a Young,,,Innovative,,,Education Specialist in
Peter Gorman,,,,Meanwhile,,,,,Guilford County ends up keeping the "CULL" of the Charlottte Superintendent search,,,,Dr. Grief.....

A Handshake says alot about a Man and according to the one lady in Charlotte who shook hands with the Good Dr.,,,,,,,his handshake was not very Proffessional and in fact was a little long and scary for the Business at hand.

I suppose Mr. Gorman was a little more of a Gentleman....

And, the winner is the people of Charlotte.

The loser is the people of Greensboro.

Why am I starting to see some posts on the CB and LTE starting to attack the parents and students of Northwest as being racists? Is that they are now the target of the "diversity" forces now that Southwest has safely been destroyed? I understand that we can't allow successful schools to exist in this school district, especially as it makes the other schools look bad by comparison. Now, that Dr. Grier is safely back into the fold, the attack upon Northwest may begin. We can't allow Northwest to continue being "too white" and "too successful". It'll make the rest of the schools look bad. We want all of our schools to be equal - equally bad.

Debora, you better alert your friends in Northwest about what is about to happen to them and their school. Marti Sykes will soon be saying "Those Northwest kids need diversity".

This is nuts. Dr. Grier...the school board...new policies... Why do I still choose to work for this school system? I keep telling myself the money is worth it to be able to support my family, but I'm starting to wonder...

It's not about excellence, it is about the lowest common denominator. They cannot allow a comparison of failing schools to those that are near average. If all are failing then everyone has the same pain, but if a couple of schools are performing it makes them look bad. Instead of fixing schools that need help, they are willing to bus kids to make failing schools look better and better schools look more like the failing ones. Everyone is then equal and the problem has been fixed. Easy as pi.

My question is why so many of the highest rated High Schools in our country have more than 1/3 free and reduced lunch children attending and some are over 2/3 free and reduced lunch? Does this mean kids in another district on free and reduced lunch get more vitamins in their lunch? Are their genes better? Or has their school district leadership quit griping about poverty and started focusing on real issues?

Garth said:

Childs IQ ~ Childs lunch cost

Well, The Rhino had an interesting article today reporting on an interesting relationship that Deena Hayes has with a MBE that is receiving substanial amounts of non-bid business from GCS. There are denials of conflict of interest involved, but it does look bad. Even if therte is no conflict of interest on Deena Hayes' part here, it is obvious that GCS needs a disclosure process which is common in business. Even if she has not profited directly from her relationship with an individual that is associated with a firmn that she has been promoting to get non-bid business, there should be a process whereby she should have reported that she had a relationship that could be construed as a conflict of interest. Most businesses concerned about being viewed as ethical do this, why not school board members and superintendents?

And, why did Sheila Willet resign her post as MWBE Coordinator after less than six months? Is it true that she was being pressured to award ore non-bid business to CoMor, who has received substanial business from GCS? Does this dramatic increase in costs of non-bud business have anything to do with GCS suddenly not able to compelete projects on planned costs?????

Stormy, I wondered whether I should ask this first or you should.

My question is why the News-Record hadn't uncovered this matter, and it took a reporter from the weekly alternative to find this? Is it because the N-R doesn't want to report on any problems with the school board or superintendent, or is it that they don't have enough curiousity to dig into these matters? In either case, they are not serving the county community very well.

I have a little time to reflect on the educationl Woes of the High Point Schools.

With our schools failing,,,,along with the demise of the Retail Businesses at Oak Hollow Mall,,,it seems only fitting that High Point can take the two negatives and make something positive out of the situation....

Lets' close all three High Schools in High Point and centralize all students into one large facility,,,,The Oak Hollow Mall.

This move would enable our leaders to promote and control more of their desired Socialist flavor upon the fine citizens of High Point.

This school could possibly be named in honor of Dot Kearns,,,for her years of service toward destroying public education and also helping to build some of the most successful Private schools in the Nation,,,,,The "Dot Kearns Reformatory" has a nice ring to it....

Southwest High School could be sold to Piedmont Center and used as Offices,,,,,Andrews could be sold to the Furniture Industry for yet another Empty Showroom,,,,,and Lo and Behold,,,Central High School could be maintained as a Museum for "DOTS" Legacy,,,,what ever that might be.....

This solution would also equalize all spending and enable all sudents the "Right" to enjoy "Forced Busing".

Dot could also enforce a nice Dress Code upon her massess,,,maybe crisply ironed, green fatigues with the "HAMMER and SICKLE" emblazoned upon the backs of the little Guinea Pigs.....

Whoops,,,I'm late for the GAME,,,,Gotta Go.....

Score big one for Rhino! There should not even be a remote interest by a board member. Deena should know better. Letter to editor anyone, Enterprise missed it also.

Will the Shenanigans ever cease in Guilford County Leadership?????????????

At what point do the people of Guilford County Wake Up and put a STOP to the CRIMES that our so called Leaders are Committing??????????

My family was on our way home today, traveling on I-40 near Winston Salem. We noticed a couple in a car waving at us and honking. When we finally exited, we noticed that the car followed, still waving and honking, so we pulled off the road. The couple said they were from out of town, had seen our Grier-ended magnet and wanted to know what it meant.

We told them it was about our school superintendent Terry Grier. They thought it was hilarious. As it turns out, the lady used to teach in McDowell County (Grier was the superintendent). She HATES Grier!!! I won't say what the husband said.

She told us that the school where she worked was totally against Grier's policies. He let them know that if they didn't stop complaining he would FIRE A TENURED TEACHER!! This lady was the unlucky target! She said Grier threatened her and forced her to resign.

She had another story about him and his 1st wife that I won't repeat because it could be very damaging (and I think Jennifer would delete it). Let's just say, the lady said she prayed for Grier's wife and kids everyday.

We told them about the lady on the news that called him Dr. Grief. She loved it!! Understood completely.

Then we exchanged numbers, I gave her a good supply of magnets for her McDowell County friends (and one that she stuck to the back of her car) and we said good-bye.

THIS MAN IS UNBELIEVABLE!!!

This Band of Idiots continue to go round and round,,,,,,ignoring educational issues,,,all the while lining their pockets with favors from each other for their own personal agenda....

Jennifer,,,as the CRACK REPORTER that you are,,,,PLEASE investigate and get to the bottom of all the NONSENSE that is happening right under Dr. Griefs' Nose....

What is the NR's position on Deena hayes and her boyfriends relationship vs a conflict on interest?
Is Grier involved?
Does the School authority have a conflict of interest policy?

Ivory said:

I don't want to hear the words "white privilege" ever again until we can openly discuss "school board privilege".

The Rhino mentioned that Deena's live-in male friend received half the minority contracts. Coincidence? It also stated that some of the contracts were double the market price. It is one thing to hand out contracts to minorities in accordance with the law. (Which DOES include women in the law.) It is another if the taxpayers are paying unfair prices for the same work that could be done by OTHER minority contractors.

Using one's influence in public office to lobby one's peers to one's cause could certainly be construed by the public as conflict of interest. Deena has stated her views publicly at many school board meetings. At the previous board meeting the discussions went round and round about paying the consultant Deena had recommended to finish the job with the remaining funds. I did not hear her comment last night on this unless I missed that part of the meeting. Why?

Board members are careful not to vote when their may be a conflict of interest(as mentioned by Alan). However, this is just one minor part of "conflict of interest" and "influence by political office" according to other professionals.

If it is true that members of the school board can pick and choose the schools for their children, that is also "school board privilege".

This is off topic, but I have not had any luck getting News and Record to cover this.

There are several hundred parents, predominently from the African American community, representing many faiths, who have formed a parental advocacy group called the Community Education Organization.

They are meeting this Thursday night, April 20th at New Light Missionary Baptist Church at 6:30pm.

I do not understand why this group is being ignored by the News and Record.

We often hear complaints that the African American parents do not show up at schools and/or do not participate in educational advocacy. This is simply not true, but when this group gets together in this large of a number, and it is ignored by the major press, maybe that is why that misperception is out there.

So Jennifer and others at News and Record, why is the work of this group being ignored, and what do I need to do to get you to cover the meeting on Thursday? Run through the hall naked?

Terrina Picarello said:

By the way, if you would like more information on the Community Education Organization please visit the yahoo group site at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/communityeducationorganization/

Summer will soon be here. Now that sounds like fun! I guess to get your question answered about publicity you will have to have permission from Action Greensboro. Jim Melvin and Guilford Education Alliance sure seems to get lots of publicity.

Why hasn't Jennifer run the story about Deena and her alleged conflict of interest? The Rhino sure had the scoop last week.

Thanks for the update on the group meeting April 20th. Covering parental groups who care about education in our communities should be job one of any reporter. I noticed last night when I attended another organization’s first meeting, that Jana Benscoter, the Rhino Times newest reporter was there. Interestingly her articles have been groundbreaking and insightful. I am amazed at the quality of her technical research and ability to see past the press management that Grier has set up. Covering these meetings will give her an edge beyond her already great research skills. I have forwarded your post to her so it will get some coverage.

Her research on Deena Hayes’ live – in and her almost fanatic pressing for more “minority – non-white -women” contractors was a sample of genius reporting at work. That we continue to spend “hemorrhage” from the public coffers for political favoritisms in a school district crying for more money, diverting bond money from promised schools and now taking salary, supply and text-book money from teachers to pay for these extravagances is beyond my comprehension. I once thought her dedication to the community she represented was admirable. Now, my hopes and belief in her “sincerity” have been flushed down the toilet with our hard earned tax dollars. I truly believed she was a cut above, a real representative of her district. Her change of attitude towards Grier shocked me, now we know why.

Most painful to me was remembering my own childhood. Five Stepmothers and two live-ins takes a toll on any child. For my little brother it was devastating. That she subjects herself and her children to such an environment seals any belief I had in her supposed values. Now her opposition to Resource officers takes on a different light along with her frantic devotion to “minority contractors that are non-white women” has a racist tone only diminished by the self serving press to expand the scope of non-bid contracts that benefits her live-in so very much.

Greed and power are destroying our schools from the top down!

WE THE TAXPAYERS DESERVE ACCOUNTABILITY!

Basics, quality, safe, neighborhood schools for all! I see personal agendas, where are the educational ones? Support our teachers, our neighborhoods, our schools and most importantly our children. That I believe is the only purpose of a school administration. The rest is fluff!
