No cuts to teacher supplements
Superintendent Terry Grier has again revised his Mission Possible plan, this time removing teacher supplements from the equation. School officials scaled down the size of the proposal by about $300,000 and would decrease some principal and teacher bonuses and remove three schools from the list.

Morgan,
According to Inside sources at Andrews High School,,,,yesterday when Dr. Grier arrived for his Interview with FOX 8,,,he was ESCORTED into Andrews by 3 Police Officers.....
Morgan,,,Could you please look into this and confirm or deny this report.....
If true,,,,,why should Dr. Grier need Police protection?????????
If Protection is needed,,,why would he allow students to attend a School that is so Dangerous?????
Is Dr Griers' Safety more important than the Teachers, Staff or students at the School???????
Please Explore this and let the Truth be heard....

Morgan,
Inside sources tell me that an Incident occurred at Southwest high school last week,,, it seems that a teacher walked into a classroom to find a Student dancing around the room in his Boxer Drawers,,,,,HIGH AS A KITE,,,,out of his Mind.......
The Student was sent to an empty room to sleep it off,,,now that is some kind of discipline....
Oh, by the way,,, the student was back in class the next morning.
Dot Kearns Goal of Dismantling the Once ,,,Successful Southwest High School is now in Full Motion....

Maybe they were filming a commercial for Haynes underwear!

How amazing that only a few days ago the only way Mr. Grier could find the money to pay bonuses/incentives was to take it from the rest of the teachers, AND NOW he has found the money through other administrative cuts. Thanks to all the teachers and possibly school board members who kept the pressure on for him to do so.

Hey, Smoke One for Dot, remember Dot made SW into the Dance Magnet School, maybe this kid was rehearsing..........
And if you really wanted to do some investigative reporting was this kid a HP Choice Plan lottery winner over the last 2 years or attending his "neighborhood school"?
Oh by the way, Raider in the TeePee, its furniture market week and Dr. Grief just needed to beat the traffic.

Let's get one thing clear, Dr.Grier never said or tried to cut anyone's supplement. For anyone to say otherwise, shows a gross lack of understanding and listening skills.
Taking away something you never have is never a cut.
Posted on April 27, 2006 12:05 PM
How about when teachers have to dip into their own wallets each year to purchased needed classroom supplies, is that a CUT???
As in Dr. Grief undercutting my school's budget is cutting into my personal cash.

Now I'm sure. Joe has lost his mind.
Posted on April 27, 2006 2:38 PM
LP, I agree!
Posted on April 27, 2006 5:46 PM
Joe, If I am scheduled to receive a raise every year, even just a small one to help with the cost of living, and I am told I will not get it, I HAVE had something taken away.
If they take your next social security check away or your next annuity check, will you complain? After all, you haven't received it yet.
DA!

Be careful Deena. We are watching your every move!
Posted on April 27, 2006 6:47 PM
Joe,
Let's be sure to apply the same logic that you're using for teacher's supplements to the budget.
A penny increase to last year's budget is still an increase. I don't want Grier and company complaining about the fact they "only" get $15 million when they "need" $30 - $100 million.
A penny increase to the amount spent on central administration office positions is still an increase. ZERO increase to the teachers ought to equate to zero increases across the board.
A zero increase to teachers ought to equate to a zero increase for the superintendent (this includes any benefit/retirement account shenanigans)! He ought to lead by example.
It's your logic Joe..... I like it!

Assaults increasing at Eastern Guilford Middle school perpetuated by repeat offenders!!
"One student fresh out of juvi tracked down and assaulted another student in a gang related argument. (Crypts vs Bloods...............but as you have been told...there are no gang members in our school..ask the students) This is not the first time he's been kicked out!
Just this week a group of students jumps a single student with chains wrapped around their hands.
One student suspended 10 days the student with the chain...til the end of the year....
But he will be back next year, he deserves and education!

Raider of the Diddie ,
Grier is a Rock Star, courted by many, thus the requirement for an entourage.
Smoke Over the Water,
In his boxer drawers and high on pot? Shades of my HS in the 60's.
Buckmtn,
You have a valid point. My kid in HS brought home a request from one of his teachers to bring in a ream of colored paper by a certain date in order to EARN 25 EXTRA CREDIT POINTS. This is TERRIBLE, I want my child to earn extra points on the subject matter, not on supplying colored copier paper to the Guilford County school system. Apparently, according to my child, the teacher is desperate for supplies. I'm gonna provide the copier paper plus get an extra ream. Bless her heart.
Not good. Begging the kids for supplies, and giving credit for doing so, sort of like buying a grade.
Posted on April 28, 2006 2:08 PM
Why wasn't I given the opportunity to buy supplies for my school when I was in school and get credit?
Bring an apple for teacher, get 15 credit points toward your grade.
Bring a gross of pencils, get 125 points. Provide worms & frogs to the biology class and get 500 points.
Instead of going to the local college, as a result of my credits boosting my grade, I could have gone to Harvard.

Better grades for supplies,
No bid contracts to school board members construction Company.
Traditional schedule at middle class, strong board members schools,
Useless Block at high impacted schools.
That is just the way it is in Guilford county.

According to the Rhino there are several unhappy minority companies. CoMar is winning far too many bids!
Posted on April 29, 2006 7:57 AM
Competition is good. Keeps contract prices down, which translates into keeping our property taxes lower.
The minority contractors are helping to put downward pressure on contracts which is making the Good Old Boys upset.
This is good for Guilford County.
Posted on April 29, 2006 8:14 AM
Bubba,
You are confused. The contractors are upset because there is no competition. CoMar is getting the business on a sweetheart deal, because there is no bidding. You are seriously wrong when you say that it is putting downward pressure on contract prices. It's just the opposite, GCS is paying more because there is no competitive bidding. This is not good for property taxes and Guilford County. You can try to spin this in favor of Terry Grier and Deena Hayes, but it just isn't that way. Something seriously smells on Eugene St.
And, yes, there is a problem with supplies in the schools. There has been for several years. Terry Grier has denied it before until he was caught, then he tried to blame it on some confusion in central office. Do you think that he would accept reposnsibility for it. No, likely he would just say that he was only doing what the board asked hin to do, as usual.

How in the world are Deena's "bootie-calls" with a CO-MAR employee good for competition or lowering contracts; apparently all that is lower is the quality of CO-MAR's work.
I guess in a twisted sort of way that is good for the economy since it appears two different companies may be doing the work of only one. No wait, that means the Guilford County taxpayers are paying twice for the same work.
That's one expensive bootie-call.

In a recent board meeting Alan Duncan said that "Hayes had been very careful not to vote during contracts that have included CoMar. But ahe hasnt been very quiet in trying to get the non bid contract level up from 30K to 75K. Its the no bid contracts where CoMar have been earning most of their money (maybe I should not say "earning"). I think Deena, if she is wise ,should be careful about pushing this anymore.
Posted on April 30, 2006 4:38 AM
Deena should resign!
Posted on May 1, 2006 7:16 AM
I just read the 4/27 Rhino article on CoMar. Seems like other contractors are not too happy with going behind some of their work.
Unbelievable!

Deena plays the "GAME" well,,,,,with a little more experience,,,she'll rank right up there with Skip Alston and Earl Jones as the Counties' Greatest Swindlers.

Gun with no bullets at Central today. Parents beware. Stay away from High Point schools!

Pls. help me.
Why does he have a large elementary element in the plan. The critical need is High School and Middle School. I think including Elementary detracts from what needs to be done.
Also, we get a new math teacher to go to Dudley.
Can he be transferred to another school where the need may be greater?
If Dudley makes AYP, how long will we continue paying bonuses? Will Dudley ever come off the list?
Thanks,
Posted on May 1, 2006 4:56 PM
Joe,
I assume you are asking about the mission possible. My thoughts are that so many elem. get title one funding and since they do we have to transport kids if they don't make AYP's for two years in a row. Of course the added benefit would be that if they can pass in 5th grade, maybe they pass in middle schools and high school.
Excellent question about how long to pay bonuses etc. It seems the BOE never thinks ahead to ask these questions. there shoud be a plan spelled out.. ie once they pass 80% EOC's for xx years, the plan in done. However, thinking ahead is not the way we seem to do things
Posted on May 1, 2006 6:36 PM
Joe,
Dudley isn't the only high school in need of a good math teacher.
I have paid hard earned money for private tutoring and my kids do not attend Dudley.

Guns at Central,
It's time to put in the metal detectors, bring in more resource officers, start expelling students permanently for serious offenses.

Jennifer and Morgan,
Can you post the Opt-out school list that the board voted on last week? It was a last minute agenda addition but is not listed on the GCS website.
Specifically - what is the plan for the Welborn opt-out?
Thanks
