The Guilford County School Board met Thursday to discuss the audit completed in March on Dudley,Smith and High Point high schools (three of four low performing high schools). Interesting to note that altogether the three schools had in place 10 of 50 indicators Phi Delta Kappa International looked at.

More importantly GCS will move forward with plans to implement a mastery learning model at the schools next year. You can read more about this effort to improve test scores in today's paper or online. You can also check out the lengthy audits on Dudley, Smith and High Point Central at your pleasure.

What I can't understand is why our 'staff' at GCS couldn't figure this out themselves. Relatively speaking this was an inexpensive study, but that was money that could have been spent in the school where it is needed. I hope that the changes make a positive change for these students. I have always said that the students will do as little as is expected of them and seems like many of the teachers at these schools have not be expecting excellence from these students. Why would they do more than expected? I know my son doesn't. If one of his teachers accepts half way done essays then that is what he will do-- tell him that he can and should do better, he does. Sad to say that my own child will do as little as possible, but there you have it. I don't think he is in the minority about that. Expect little, get little.

Yes, this could be a way to get around the "school within a school" that we currently have. Nice hiding tactics.
It will cost a lot of money. I hope that Dr.Grier gets it right this time.
