Youth gangs follow-up

About 150 parents attend last night's forum, armed with sometimes emotional responses to the amount of gang activity in Greensboro and High Point.

At the meeting, school safety coordinator Anthony Scales said the number of gang-related reported incidents rose from eight last school year to 47 so far this school year. You can read more about this in tomorrow's paper.

Below is a hand-out passed at the meeting about how to recognize gang activity and some other interesting Web sites.

47 "reported" incidences this year...that's the key word...we all know that number would be higher if principals were allowed to report the truth...but of course, we don't want to piss off Deena with the real truth...

LifeaccordingtoDeena said:

Deena says, hide it away. Dont report it so we can pretend that its not there.

Even if those cases reported are majority minority then she claims "racism"!.

This all part of the plan.

Its all their fault she cries.

I deserve to take more of the cake!

Why isn't Deena answering the question if she is married or not?

Doesn't conflict of interest policy specifally mention family members?

Come on folks.

The issue here is the future of our county. Are kids going to be funneled into gangs because we are not creating the human connection at school? Are they going to join gangs because we have not engaged them in the "gang of school?"

Remember it costs about $30.00 a day to educate a kid in school, and about $169.00 a day to keep a kid in the juvenile justice system.

So this is bigger than Deena and other issues. Do you really care or not? It is easy to get distracted, or to make this about politics, not about kids, but this is about kids.

Something to think about:

"We can, whenever and wherever we choose, successfully teach all children whose schooling is of interest to us. We already know more than we need to do that. Whether or not we do it must finally depend on how we feel about the fact that we haven't so far. " Ron Edmonds

This is what I have seen in the schools that I have observed in the last couple of months. This is not just a Guilford County thing, but an American thing.

So now what are we going to do about it?

Its always about politics.

And money!

Terrina,

Tell it to most of the school board members who care about the politics of their own district.

Tell it to school board members who care about the money that goes to minority contractors.

It is not easy to engage kids in the "gang" of school when you bus kids into unknown territory miles from friends and family. Kids still cling to what they are familiar with.

Saw the graduating class from Northwest High practicing today. Only saw about 20 black kids out of hundreds! What is Northwest doing to help take their share of "the gang" problem?

Sooner or later the SB are going bus those gangs right up there to Summerfield.

Thats the only solution our SB can come up with.

Terrina,
you energy needs to be vented at the school board.

They are the people in power. They are the ones that can pressure Grier. Come on. Lets get after them!

Has GCS tried group-hugs for the misbehaving kids? That might make them feel better in this feel-good system.

No Vanilla! said:

I heard they are looking into piping aroma therapy into some of the schools this fall. I think Deena's sister owns an aroma therapy store and will supply the scents at the bargain price of 3 times what she normally charges.

They were thinking of using vanilla at Dudley but the leadership team didn't want any vanilla there!

Morgan Josey said:

Are schools really going to use aroma therapy in schools?

I would dispute the assertion OHHLA is a site "where youth go to post gangster lyrics" and that's all. All artists are represented, from gangster to philosophical, from commercial to underground. We even have a large selection of gospel rap lyrics and people who submit them regularly. Saying OHHLA is just for gangsters is a gross misrepresentation.
