Easley targets failing high schools

Now it's Gov. Mike Easley's turn to threaten failing high schools. (See press release here.)

Back in March, Wake County Superior Court Judge Howard Manning Jr. said he wouldn't allow repeatedly failing high schools - including Dudley and Smith in Greensboro - to open in 2006-07 if they don't do well on state tests this year.

Preliminary test results for Guilford are in, but we've yet to see school-by-school data. Will any schools make the grade? Should the failing ones be broken into smaller schools or should principals and teachers be replaced? (Those are basically the main options Easley proposes: redesign or restructure.)

Usually on a team its the coach that gets the boot. So in my mind if you take a "big picture" approach it should be Dr. Grief who gets the boot. (I still can't get that lady in Charlotte via Ohio out of my mind who coined his new name.)

Or if micro-managing is your thing, then the School Board members who voted the existing failing policies into place should get the boot.

Am I finally reading an admission from the N&R that the Guilford County schools are a failure? No I doubt it.

Agreed Buckmtn. The coach is fired and usually his assistance are soon departed, so you summed up the course of action well. Good luck to you folks in getting any kind of real proper action out of Smeazly or anyone else in government.

No doubt, the best answer is for Coach Grief to get kciked off the island. When he controls what happens in schools, how do you hold the principal responsible? The principals don't even get to make decisions on school supplies and paper. changing principals is one of Grief's favorite hobbies. If he changfes principals regularly, it causes distractions, so people don't focus on the real source of the problem. Let's give the Old Ball Coach his free agency to pursue any job he chooses. And don't forget to let his six board stooges go as well.
