AYP results to be released tomorrow

For some, Guilford County Schools' release of adequate yearly progress results tomorrow will garner accolades and feelings of accomplishment. For others it will spark disappointment, resignation or frustration. For all, those feelings will be tempered by uncertainty, as the district only has preliminary and partial results to release.

Last year, 58 percent of local elementary and middle schools met AYP goals after minimum passing rates for reading and math were raised, compared to 72 percent in 2003-04. Only five of 20 high schools made AYP in 2004-2005 compared to 10 the previous year.

We will only get partial scores tomorrow because the state is still reviewing the results of new end-of-grade math tests. The Guilford County Board of Education also pulled Title 1 funding from the county's poorest high schools last year to keep them from facing possible AYP sanctions.

Read a full report on this in Wednesday's paper (assuming district scores are released on time). What do you expect this year?

UPDATE: Results in many districts across the state, including Guilford, have been delayed. Read more.

I expect worse overall news. Hopefully some of our border line schools will make the grade, but most schools due better in math than Language and without those schools I fear we will be down.

We already know that Andrews and Central are almost the same (35% and 50ish passing rates). Smith is down (45%) and I am not sure about Dudley.
It is not looking good.
One intersting thing I noted recently was that Smith had been making small improvements year over year for the last three. Then Grier changed the principal last year and it is now passing at a worse rate than five years ago.

DoubleDeena, where are you? What do you say? Do you even care about those kids?
Repeat after me........

I am not here for personal gain...
I am here to represent children!!!

BBB,
agree with you. It doesnt look good.
I wonder what DoubleDeena will say this time?

Hey Deliver here's what I'll say this time...

I learned this from my mentors at Guilford College so repeat after me.....

I'M WHITE AND I'M ASHAMED.
I'M WHITE AND I'M ASHAMED.
I'M WHITE AND I'M ASHAMED.

Any questions?

No sit your white butt down and quit bothering me.

I say Debora's predictions will be correct. Our non English speaking population keeps growing each year. It is hurting our reading scores.

Repeat offenders who need to be suspended are still allowed to take up space in our schools and disrupt students who want to learn. It can only go downhill. Nothing will change until problems are dealt with.

Once again GCS will be behind the 8 ball, moving more students for the "numbers", creating more programs to stall the governor and Judge Manning.
You can only keep stalling the inevitable for so long. We lose many of our best students to private schools every year.

I ran into a teacher yesterday who asked "what happens when the opt out schools students move? You have to move the teachers with them so there will enough teachers." So in essence you have just moved: a) students b) same teachers. You just changed the location but the human factor is the same.

"No matter where you go, there you are."

If the scores are much worse than last year, we are in big trouble. The cry for regime change would be in the air.

I personally think the scores will be a mixed bag. Some people will say we are improving and some will say we are sliding. I can assure you that the BOE will put the best spin on it.

Wake county is not releasing either-- and keep in mind that the extend 2 students (those that need extra time) scores will not be back till Sept. Many of these are our EC students and have a tough time with the test so percentages will change when their scores are added.

Freddy Niché said:

Now we are laughing with ---what?---joy, maybe, at the prospect of low test scores.

Just sick.

That said, as much of a supporter of the public schools as I am, if the middle and high schools in the city of Greensboro don't improve soon, I will be planning a move so my daughter will have s hot at a good college. We can't afford private school (and I am no fan) and can't have one of us quit work to home school.

Ben said:

Yes Freddie, I am laughing with JOY! My child is being sent to a low performing school across town for the sake of diversity and I desperately want the state to come in and fix the school.

Not Grier, nor his staff, nor our school board know how to fix our schools so my last hope is that the state can do it.

I just wonder if Grier would have sent them back if they had appeared too high. Of course not, they sucked again and he is doing all he can to adjust them before he has to publish them.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Truth said:

Freddy, I think Ben said it all. Sometimes you have to go backwards in life to go forwards and a lot of us are hoping that the undeniable AYP results go backwards to force some changes.
Griers system tries to hide away and dilute failing children. He needs to go.
If nothing happens then we will just continue with more of the same.
Guaranteed failure, bussing, more programs, less teaching etc...etc....

agoodlaugh said:

YEAH,FREDDY, IF YOU HAD TO DEAL WITH HALF THE CRAP WE DO IN HIGH POINT, YOU WOULD BE LAUGHING TOO.

AS PARENTS OF HIGH POINT, WE HAVE BEEN THROUGH ALL THE RAW EMOTIONS DEALING WITH EVERY ASSINE DECISION THE SCHOOL BOARD AND GRIER MAKE.
SOMETIMES LAUGHTER IS THE ONLY THING THAT IS LEFT!

AND I ALSO SEE THAT YOU ARE DISSATISFIED WITH THE WAYS THINGS ARE IN GREENSBORO!

Numbersgame said:

Freddy,

If you were to move, to which part of the county do you think you would relocate? Is there a specific school that you would rather your child attend?

Freddy assumes that Ben Dover was laughing.

Is it possible that it wasn't so much a "HA HA HA" as a "AH AH AH" the sound poor Ben might make as he is being Grierended again!

But for some us this blog is cheaper than therapy!

Hey does anyone know if there is going to be a back to school display on Southwest Road?

I sure miss that yellow bus that Walter was driving!

Freddy,

I've never seen a community (meaning the NHP bunch) that so much enjoyed the prospect of bad news that might happen to come forth from our community's educational system. If our students happen to suffer in test scores, they become intoxicated with joy feeling this is another arrow in Grier's side.

Their perversity is such that they would prefer to see the system fail in order to sack Dr. Grier. Reminds me of the time when the Right Wing Nut Jobs did everything in their power to sack our 42nd President.

Bubba,
not just Grier out.

Also on the list are:
Marti (give those kids diversity) Dykes,
Kris (I'll vote the way Alan tells me) Kooke,
Deena (must get more contracts for my boyfriend/hussie) Hayes,
Dot (got to look after my realtor buddies) Kearns,
Susan (absolutely everything for Central) Mendenhall,
and last but not least,
Walter (wake me up when its time to vote for you Dot) Childs.

Unless you agree that failing 3000+ kids from 4 schools every year for the last seven years is ok?

WE NEED CHANGE!

BADAYPAGAIN said:

So we have a three day delay now. I heard through a birdie that the results are worse than last year. Grier has the stat man working on the excuses and looking for any kind of good news to divert attention from the bad.
This time the board has to take a stance. The guy goes around to other school systems bragging that he specializes in turning around failing High Schools.
After seven years here in GC I beg to differ.

FreetheBubba said:

Bubba,
did you see that a big part of this years budget was to be spent on a program called little Dot riding hood or something. Its to teach 6th and 9th graders to read!!!
Children are already failing but they are being hidden away and passed through by Grier's admin.
The greatest thing that happenned for "Guilford County" was for the school board to pick on a bunch of innocent North High Pointers.
We are questioning/pressing and forcing the SB to CHANGE!
Believe it Bubba!

Stormy said:

Bubba's reduced to guerrilla warfare, taking shots from cover at NHP. He has nothing to offer in defense of Grier and his pitiful results. If everyone in Charlotte could see through this man, what is wrong with this county? Everywhere else he has been tossed out with the trash, and Guilford rewards his failures with raises and incentives. An amazing phenomenon. Willie Best got tossed for his failures. Who's protecting Grier?

Lord, hear our prayers, Get Grier Outta Here.

Bubba Luvs Jesus said:

BLBush,

Former President William Jefferson Clinton is correct. Good job.

That "philandering" former President you refer to just so happens to be on best friend terms with 41 & apparently your favorite, 43. In fact, 43 has stated that he forsees the potential for a Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton-Bush sweep of the White House.

43 even went so far to refer to 42 as a brother-like figure to him and on several occasions has sought out 42's advice on matters of national security and insights on how he can bolster his sagging poll numbers.

Stormy,

Willie Best got canned because the white members of the CC saw an opportunity to elevate one of their own kind to that position. Mr. Best, during his job review three months prior to his termination, was never apprised of any performance related issues that would result in his firing. Billy won this round, but Skip will overcome in the end.

Lord Hear Our Prayers.

Bubba Reads National Inquirer said:

BLB

43 seeking brotherly advice. you cannot believe all you read in The Star Newspaper.

Willie Best was fired because that's about the shelf life for a city manager. His contract was up. He was ineffective. Some the same commissioners hired him. They have the authority to cancel his contract. It will be nice to have a county manager who actually speaks at meetings.

Skippy is losing a lot of his clout and he doesn't like it. Losing is position in the NAACP was the first sign. He wasn't too smart calling the white democrats "racist".

FreetheBubba said:

Bubba,
What interest do you have in supporting the perpetuation of this cycle of failure in our hardest hit schools?
For seven years now those hardest hit schools have failed more and more children. Each time you have been asked about this you have ignored it and continue to support Grier.
Those children at Grimsley, NW etc do not need much help. The real dilemma is in the low performing schools?
You say that we the SW community are the bad apples when its really the complacent members of our society like you that are contributing and helping this failure.
Stop being selfish Bubba and join us in pressing for REAL change. We cannot afford more failure

Freddy Niché said:

Actually, Numbers, I wouldn't relocate within Guildford County at all. None of the high schools, with the exception, perhaps, of Grimsley (maybe NW...maybe), is on par with the schools of Connecticut or New Jersey or much of Pennsylvania (outside the biggest cities). I have family up north, so that seems the logical direction. With global warming, it might even be more temperate!

Stormy said:

Freddy,

If you are going to move to Connecticut or New Jersey for better schools, then you'd be better off to stay here and send your kids to private school. The increased taxes that you will pay in those states would pay for your private schooling. In addition, most other things are more costly, like housing, which could easily be 100% more expensive (which also increases property taxes). Better check it before you jump.

I don't fault you, though, about not relocating within Guilford County as long as we have the current superintendent and school board. You never know what they may do to screw-up the best schools. I did note that Rockingham Schools had about 71% of their schools make AYP, so there is some hope in the area.

Stormy said:

Bubba,

Make no mistake, the firing of Willie Best was handled terribly, but it wasn't about his race. It may be true that they wanted to replace him with McNeill, but it wasn't because of his race, but his greater competence. You are right, they probably should have treated Best better, but then they should have treated Jenks Crayton better as well. I heard no complaints from you about that one, and he had several outside agencies investigate him and report that he was doing a good job. It was just Alton and Davis that had this inner feeling that he wasn't. Was that about race?

Now, we have a school superintendent that has had massive failures in his assignment, but he will likely get a raise, rather than his release. Is that racial? May be. Perhaps, you should investigate that, Bubba.

Lord, hear our prayers. Get Greir Outta Here.

Judge: Low-performing schools not improving enough

Your story online about Judge Manning today doesn't even mention GCS. I could care less about Charlotte and Durham schools (as most of us on the CB), what about Guilford? We know that some of our county schools was on that list earlier this year. What's the story now?

Stormy said:

Oh, how much longer can GCS stall in releasing the AYP results that by law were to be released earlier this week? Can they be requested by using Freedom of Information Act request?

gcs teacher said:

Word from the district is that AYP data will be released early next week.

GCS Employee said:

Word from the district is that the results show very little to no improvement. Grier might go after this one.

J said:

I think that we all need to keep the following in perspective when looking at these AYP results and relating them to NCLB. Are we really failing our children? I think that far and by large, we are more successful now, especially with children with disabilties than we were 10 years ago. The NCLB law must change or all school districts in the entire country and going to be labeled failing in the coming years and all the teachers are going to exit public education and then where will we be? Better off, if you believe in Bush's administration and his NCLB baby.
