Board discusses student survey
Should results from a student safety survey be used to guide district programming and training?
The school board discussed this issue Tuesday. See survey results here.
Budget discussions came toward the end of the meeting and we couldn't get many details in today's paper. Read tomorrow's edition to see what will be cut to balance the 2006-07 budget.

Did anyone out there hear Dot say that once when she was teaching a class, the kids were literally jumping out the windows? I know I always feel like commiting suicide when she speaks but had no idea that she had the same effect on kids!

45 of 2500 or so kids admitted to bringing a gun into our schools last year.
123 brought a knife.
307 have actually seen a child with a gun in school.
21% of children though Gangs are a serious problem.
27% thought that Racial conflict is a serious problem.
32% thought that drug use is a serious problem.
Amos said the fact that more children thought race is a bigger issue than gangs an issue.
He said. We have talked more about gangs than race.
Amos, that was only when the Emorywood crowd wanted to Jerrymand High Point.
Anyway folks.
This is........

Oh dear! Those students that were jumping out of windows, are they okay? Was this a tall building they were in? Could that be considered a form of child abuse? What on earth was Mrs. Kearns saying that would cause kids to jump out of windows? I have never heard of such a thing.
Mrs. Kearns should keep this in mind when she speaks at school board meetings. She really does take a long time to make her point, and actually, most times she has no point.
Isn't it time she just shut up?

5% sampling is NOT a valid survey. Once again you can make the stats say what you want.

With Grier's spactacular ability to bamboozle and alter numbers with such great finesse, why doesn't the school system just wave their magic wand and show us the statistics that claim that all kids in Guilford are doing great and just call it quits.
This circus needs to pack up and get outta town.
Hey school board and Grier, step up to the nearest window and JUMP!

I'm still waiting for my "Parent Survey".
Posted on July 13, 2006 1:28 PM
Not Valid,
To put Guilford's sampling size of about 2,500 students into perspective, Gallup conducts polls using 1,000 adults.

MJ
It doesn't matter. Survey can pick and choose who they want to ask. 5% is a very low number in the big scheme of thing. You must be reading the wrong newspaper to see what is really happening in our schools.
You sound like Alan D at the SB meeting trying to reason about polls on capital punishment given to jury members. Sorry it doesn't work that way in our schools.
A true survey would include all the parents and students who left to home school, go private, or moved out of Guilford County plus a large sampling of who still remains. This would be the true picture.
Let me suggest you read ALL the local newspapers and make a few visits to various schools. One comes out free every Thursday.

The BOE is always listening to everyone except the best educational experts in the country that have a proven track record on how to inspire students to higher levels of excellance.
Posted on July 13, 2006 3:22 PM
Joe I disagree. The BOE does the exact opposite of what you say. They listen to NO one and pay huge consultant fees to consultants that can validate their latest scheme.
Can you say Kahlenburg?
It's so simple. Ask Parents, Ask Teachers. The answer is so simple and the asking is FREE. Grier is just afraid of the answers he will get so he DOES NOT ASK!!!!!!!

Educational experts come and go. It depends on who has is publishing their latest book (theory). Remember the article in "Yes Weekly" about Fuller training. His biggest fan and former colleague doesn't believe in it now.
Go to one of the last Friday notes. There is an article at the bottom questioning whether the three training methods being pushed in our schools even work. One worked in the first and second school but not in others.
If the so called "experts" are right why are our public schools (not just in Guilford County) failing? Why is the Gates Foundation coming up with the "latest" solutions? Small acadamies. Could it be the money factor? Just like applying for grants then making up a program to fit the latest grant. See Business Weekly a few weeks ago that Darlene quoted from. Many disagree with the Gates' approach also. It depends who you talk to.
It also depends on who is playing golf with whom and what deal is struck on the golf course. This goes on in all businesses. Can you say "networking"?
Joe, no disrespect meant. Just keep pushing for your school name.

Firstly,
Grier cannot hide the contempt that he has for state teams, Judge Manning and the governor etc. Its plainly obvious and it is disrespectful.
When he is sarcastic about the above the board should hit him hard! If it wasn’t for him these groups would not be here.
Secondly, I bet he is just as sarcastic about the board itself behind their backs as he laughs all the way to the bank!

Small academies.
If HP Central has 1400 kids. 700 of them regularly fail.
The salvation for the school an this academy, which will be available for about 200 kids.
It’s just a silly question but what is the plan for the other 500 or so?
Has anyone from the school board asked this?
Does anyone else know?
Posted on July 13, 2006 8:16 PM
I thought the same thing, how does a small academy make a difference for the other students, and at HP it will only be for 100-200 the first year or two... same for Smith.
No plans spoken of for A&T or Bennett and they only pass about 25-35%-- also Eastern and Southern are in trouble, and Dudley and if they raise the bar to 70% rumor has it Page might only make 69% this year, so if it doesn't improve they could be in trouble.
Posted on July 13, 2006 8:54 PM
Does the board have the brains to ask that one?
Posted on July 13, 2006 9:06 PM
The academy at Smith had to do with poor race relations between black and Hispanic students. You can read related articles in the Carolina Peacemaker from this past year. Rumors have it that it was becoming impossible to teach at Smith because of problems being brought intot he school from surrounding neighborhoods.
Question: Why is the freshman academy at High Point Central being discontinued? I thought it was supposed to be successful? Is it because the grant money ran out? Does anyone know this?
Posted on July 14, 2006 8:12 AM
If they would stop busing kids from Page's backyard
to Eastern we can let them join the 60% and under club this year.
If a manager in my company was failing our customers like Grier is failing our students he would be held accountable.
How many more of our high schools must fail before
our school board realizes that we are heading in the wrong direction?
And Morgan/Jennifer why is the "entire" roofing system in the middle school being repaired.
We were told the gym had to be closed because
of the danger of the roof collapsing. It was
closed all year. Now the entire school is closed, yet our students have been in that building all year.
What is the cover up??
Posted on July 14, 2006 8:46 AM
Dr. Griefs' Litter Box is just about Full.
He has covered up enough S*^T in Guilford County Schools that it is time for the State to finally take over and Clean up the Mess,,,,,every time a problem occurrs in our schools,,,the "TOP CAT" scratches a pile of High Paid Consultants or Self Serving, Kick-Back Seminars on to the problem just enough to get it out of Sight.
Dr. Grief,,,Please find another Home,,,,you are an Expert as a Con Man, but a Failure as a Successful School Superintendent.....
You Disgrace the title of "Doctor of Education",,,because you have FAILED the Children of Guilford County......

Meow Mix, I have this School Board fooled so good I'll never leave. You just wait until I get another contract extension next month and a $40,000 or $50,000 raise to boot for that little performance I put on down in Charlotte a few months ago. CAN YOU SAY ADJUSTING MY PAY TO MARKET CONDITIONS???
Why I'm the cat who swallowed the canary.
Posted on July 14, 2006 12:37 PM
Top Cat,
If you don't get the raise you are expecting, please, please keep looking for better balls of yarn somewhere else. And when you leave, please take Little Cat A, Little Cat B, Little Cat C, Little Cat D and Little Cat DD with you.

Back to the survey. It depends on which 5% of students you got your samples from. Unless you took a sampling of every group: male, female, smart, not so smart, rich, poor, every race, you do not have an adequate sampling.
