High Point Central Academy update

I didn't have a chance to write about the enrollment at the Academy at Central last week, given everything that was going on with Eastern, Hairston and Kernodle and Smith Academy. Following is what board members learned:

The Academy at Central had enrolled 93 students as of Friday, with 40 in culinary arts, 10 in medical careers (which the district added after some students expressed an interest) and 41 in public safety. The number of students taking Culinary 1 and 2 classes had dropped slightly from 53 the previous year to 47.

Board of Education member Anita Sharpe was concerned about the number of floating teachers at High Point Central. The school has 20 floating teachers, according to the school district. How does that compare to other traditional high schools?

Southeast also has 20 floating teachers. Eastern, Northwest, Grimsley, Page, Ragsdale, Southwest and Weaver have less than 5; Dudley, Northeast, Smith, Southern and Western have 5 to 9 floating teachers.

When can we expect to see an article regarding the Smith/Oakwood Homes building fiasco????

How about doing some in-depth analysis of this?

Do these "Segregation Academies" of 100 students have their own Principals, Guidance Counselors, Secretaries,ETC.?

Does Guilford County School Board and Grier think that money grows on Trees?

Prediction:

Dr. Grier drives Guliford County into BANKRUPTCY,,,,then Beelines on to his next great Challenge in another land.

I find it odd--No, actually scratch that--I don't find it odd (dah--this is Guilford couty)..anyway...

So ten students get an entire Medical Careers Academy because they "expressed and interest"?????

Are you joking? Are they kin to Dot Kearns? So we make entire Academies now because a few students inquire?

What about all the students that "expressed an interest" in NOT being bused!

What about all the students that "expressed an interest" in being allowed to leave for lunch period??

What about all the students that "expressed an interest" in staying at their neighborhood school?

....Am I making my point??

THERE'S A REASON THAT ALL OF HIGH POINT GETS SCREWED SO CENTRAL CAN WEAR THE CROWN!!!!!!!!! AND WE'RE TIRED OF IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dot Bison Kearns can kiss my AAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!

I have questions if anyone in blog land can answer.

If the Tomilson building at Central is suppose to be for the academy, why is my child, who is a junior, having to take two classes in the the Tomilson building?

Bus their butts to Andrews said:

Doesn't Andrews have medical careers classes? Why would they add this program to Central? I know we've said it jokingly but can the Central kids REALLY not be bused?

10 kids??????????

The Perfect TEN said:

EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BUS THEM TO A SCHOOL THAT ALREADY HAS THAT CAREER CHOICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hasn't the dilemma all along been the fact that Andrews supposedly has empty seats???

So these ten kids are too good to go across town to take Medical Careers at Andrews?

What next?? Golden toilet seats for the precious Central kids?

And to answer the question above: Your Jr. attends classes in the Tomlinson building because they couldn't get enough kids to sign up for the "Academy"!!! It's another program that has been set up to fail!!!

IT's a JOKE and a HOAX so Judge Manning would THINK we're educating kids over in High Point when in all actuality, all we're doing is HIDING them in various buildings!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Per watching the most recent school board meeting the medical careers program was moved from Andrews to Central. I think the reason given had something to do with lack of space at Andrews since the computer labs were put in. What is puzzling is that the "academies" at Central are only for Central students and not magnet programs. Now they can't even fill them.

The N & R mentioned that social studies classes were being shared in the Tomlinson Building with different grade levels.

Anita Sharpe asked about the "towers" at Central and no air conditioning during the last board meeting. Apparently some of the teachers will be in offices that are not air conditioned according to the N & R. It's not fair to those teachers. How much will this cost to add HVAC?

ChangesAreComing said:

Parent,

My guess would be because Central is next in line on Judge Manning's list of failing schools that must make changes. The judge wants smaller high schools. This is probably just the beginning.

What will it cost taxpayers when other high schools are broken up into several locations?

Darlene G inquired about "lack of space" at Andrews for smaller learning communities. T Grier replied that they are looking for space off campus.

Look for more changes to come.

Grier Doublespeak said:

So in laymen's terms the HPC Academy has:

40 Whopper Floppers in training
10 Bed Pan Handlers
40 Security Guards to be??

Will the 40 for public safety be trained in how to handle a taser so they can deal with their peers?

Ah success

Drop It! said:

So they moved the "World Class" medical careers program from Andrews to Central and they still only have 10 kids interested? DROP THE PROGRAM!!

It's almost like Grier and his cronies are intentionally sabotaging any chance of getting another bond passed.

Maybe he thinks that when he applies for another job, "they wouldn't vote for a school construction bond" will look good in the "reason for leaving previous job" field.

Numbersgame said:

I'm sorry but the numbers just don't add up!

What the heck is really going on at Andrews, Cental, SWHS?

Are they all overcrowded now?

What was the real point of the redistricting?

Grierdoublespeak,

You speak so knowledgeably about the culinary program at Central. You must have had bad experiences there when you had lunch made by the culinary arts students. What meals did you get?

debora said:

The academys at Central might be a good idea, but again GCS went about it all wrong, too fast, too little planning. I agree that 10 people are interested and they create a course is crazy! What is that about? This is not what happens in the rest of the county. There are probably many children in small groups that want a certain academy,(biotech, etc) but we can't go around creating for only 10 people.

One answer to a question posed earlier, the state will pay for a principal if there are 100 students, but the county pays for the sec/SIMS/treasurer/ for each school. I know they don't get paid much but with benefits all three must be $100,000 or more. That would mean for the two new academies, the failing A&T middle college, failing Bennett middle college that would be around $400,000 just for support staff. Don't know about custodians for those areas.

Wooooo doggies! I done thunk of a good idear for the Central Academy. I always have flashes of geenius when I'm sittin on the crapper.

Havin a high fallutin medical careers class for them youngins is like puttin perfume onna pig.

They oughta learn them kids to set up them dadgum mobile trailers that Gillford likes so much. They's always gonna be work in that field. And bless their hearts, they don't gotta pay it no never mind if they ain't dun rite cuz Gillford County will pay boo-koos to fix'em up. Plus, if the workers happen to be colored, they can git paid like 3 times what its worth. That's gravy on tha taters!

I betcha more then 10 youngins wuld sign up fer that. It's as easy as slidin offa greazy log back'ards.

Barbara Ann said:

Debora,

As always you make such good sense. For instance, just to offer an AP class there is a minimum number in most classes. I think that is uusually 10. From some parents I know whose children attended Andrews, some AP classes were dropped because the didn't have enough participation. This was one of the gripes from some of the original parents that were redistricted to Andrews in 1999. For schools that are trying to build these types of classes and raise the bar perhaps the minimum number of students should be less. GSC requires 10 for an AP class or it is cancelled, yet GCS will spend all this money for an academy of only 10???

Right again on the personnel. The principals are paid by the state. As for custodians, no matter what the use of the school space, it would still need cleaned so that would not be a consideration.

As someone previously mentioned, as Judge Manning is pushing for smaller schools, we will probably start to see more of these academies. The problems are: who is paying for them and at what cost? do they actually work? what about building on the basics of reading, writing and math?

No matter what career path a student chooses, they must be able to communicate effectively.

On another tangent, I read somewhere that Greensboro SCALES is now being considered for Craven. This was mentioned when the SB spent over a year discussing the potential use of Craven. They could not make a decision. Why wasn't SCALES put in this empty building at that time?

Solid points from Debora.

Just what did happen to the Medical academy at Andrews? If I remember correctly there was a discussion at one board meeting a while back where Dot asked if a Central student wanted to do the medical program could he/she just go to Andrews for the classes and come back to their neighborhood school? At least I think it was the medical thing.
Is this one more think that Grier has decided without informing the board?

The chaos in High point continues. We need a real representative in District 2.
Roll on 124!

Someone help me to understand this!!!

According to the GCS website (Andrews HS):
http://www.gcsnc.com/magnet_schools/pdfs/new%20brochures/EC%20ABroc06.pdf

Andrews offers an "Early College Academy of Health
Sciences"

And Central now offers an Academy having 10 students in medical careers?

Please - what's going here????????????

SameOldStuff said:

Truth,

It may have been the medical program. I remember watching that same meeting. There was a discussion about Weaver and Andrews offering similar courses. Students from Central would have to switch to Andrews. One of the reasons was to save on "transportation costs". Imagine that one.

I don't remember the BOE voting on moving the program.

Regardless Dot definitely sounded like she did not want Central students attending Andrews. So what else is new.

Same old High Point.

Billy Hill,

Your a Genius,,,,,its' been right before our eyes all this time and now we see the Light....

"The Terry Grier Trailer Technology Academy",,,what a nice Ring that has to it...

In order to sign up for this Academy, the student must promise to stay in Guilford County for 4 years after graduation,,,,setting up trailers for the schools,,,at the end of 4 years, the student could go On-line and work toward a doctorate in Trailer Engineering from Grier's Nova Southern University in Florida (The nations Capitol for Trailers).

Southwest High School would be a great place for this academy,,,,,,they have about 25 Dilapidated Trailers on site that students could learn the fine arts, from Trailer repair,,all the way to Trailer Relocation....

Some things a student might learn from this academy,,,,

How to properly Disguise Structural Failure,,,

How to properly maintain High Grass and Weeds under Trailers,,,,

How to bolt 4 trailers together,,,and with a Straight Face,,,Tell the Taxpaying Public that it is ONE unit,,,,

and as a Bonus course,,,Dr Grier himself will attempt to teach the students his Ability to become a DECEIVING LIAR when dealing with the Public...

Also Deena Hayes has brought in Renowned Engineer,,Herman Fox,,,to teach a course on,,,,How to use Minority Status to earn Gov't contracts...

Billy HIll,,,the students Futures are limitless with "The Terry Grier Trailer Technology Academy".
