In case you didn't hear Grier the first time...
Suspicion persists that Eastern, Kernodle and Hairston middle schools were unsafe for students during the school year.
Superintendent Terry Grier reiterated on Thursday that he believes the school system did an adequate job of notifying the public about work that needed to be done at the schools (and that the non-gym areas were safe). Those communications were in the form of announcements about the gyms being closed, summer schools being relocated and school start dates potentially being affected, he said.
"We keep saying it. We've not tried to hide anything from the public or you or anyone else," Grier told me over the phone.
Grier said he felt the public (namely the media) has missed the bigger picture that the school system helped catch the flaws to begin with. GCS instructed TFF and Sutton-Kennerly to find cost savings in the construction of Southern Middle and that is when the gym flaws were discovered, he said. (TFF also asked Sutton-Kennerly to review the structural designs of the school.)
"I wish that this had never occured, that this had not been an issue," Grier said, referring to the remediation work. "My big concern is if this had not been caught would we have asked the company to do that?"
I asked Grier if he thought he and school officials could have done anything different in handling this.
He said, "Hindsight you go back and you see 20-20. Could we have done something different? Geez, I don't know."
For what it's worth....

For what is worth Morgan, you are just doing your job helping the GCS publicity machine. Its what your bosses the owners of the fish wrap want you to do!

I agree this strand was totally unnecessary.
I don't need both my taxes and my N&R subscription to provide a mouthpiece for Dr. Grief.

Morgan is just reporting the facts and since in this case they are contrary to the positions of the usual whiners that complain about the BOE & administration and who refuses to acknowledge that there was NO conspiracy in this issue.
Buck consistently exhibits the characteristics of the typical whiner regarding our schools. His children are enrolled in a private institution yet he complains about a system he has no vested interest in and as a result of his decision could care less about the educational aspirations of the kids and their parents who have full confidence in the ability of they and the school system to educate our kids.

Jon,
your children probably dont go to Andrews, Smith , Dudley or Central.
The parents of children there do not only have no trust they have no hope.
Are you blind?
Posted on August 17, 2006 11:14 PM
Jon,
I like Buck, do not presently have any children attending GCS, but that doens't mean that I don't have any vested interest in what happens in them. I, like Buck, am a taxpayer in this county, and my property taxes continue to rise each year because of the shenanigans that Grier and his people pull. Where do you think that $2-3 million being spent to repair the schools' roofs is coming from? Yeah, your, Buck's and my taxes, among others. That's a vested interest, man.
You can say that there was NO conspiracy if you like. That's your right, but I am not satisfied that their actions and words have dispelled that possibility as yet. If they aren't guilty, they are sure acting like it. Why do they need a cover-up and cover story, otherwise? why did they need to threaten a county commissioner with arrest for trying to enter a school? there are many unanswered questions here that everyone is running from. Where is the school board on this one, hiding under their tables?
These schools are public, Jon, and our taxes pay to keep them open, including Grier and his employees' salaries. I suspect that if you had children in one of those schools, and there had been an incident, you would be the first one asking hard questions about what happened. I've read the timeline and the account several times, and I am not yet satisfied that all questions have been fully answered. So, if you are satisfied, then fine, let the rest of us state our cases here for more investigation of the matter. As Yogi Berra said "Ir ain't over, til it's over". And, it ain't over.

Jon,
If you have full confidence in this school system to educate your kids, you don't have very high standards or expectations. It's not the teachers' at fault here, it's the rotten system that they have to work within create by Grier. Jon, get a teacher or two to talk to you and tell you what they really feel about things, if they are courageous enough. I tell you what, contact Carol Dunn who posts on the LTE regularly. She is an ex-GCS teacher, she'll tell it to you straight about what really goes on.

"Geez, I don't know..." Nice quote from a man paid nearly 200,000.
Is that really all he could come up with? Even Dot Kearns could have formed a better response than that! Mr. Gifford Grad could have had a more intelligent response.
Well Geez Terry, if YOU don't know than who the heck does?! I really want a refund on my tax dollars since this man has been in charge.

Q&A
Why don’t all Guilford county schools open on 8/28/06?
What is the point of starting on a Friday?
If you are a parent struggling with daycare costs then starting on a Friday is a waste of time and money.
If you are a vacationing family then starting on Friday is a pain in the bump.
Everyone starting on a Monday is good common sense!
I need a parent of school age children to tell me when was the last time they were able to motivate their kids to go to bed at a decent hour after hump-day (Wednesday)?
Bottom line………..forget your last long weekend of the summer and get in gear for a REALLY SHORT week at GCS!
Unless you are lucky enough (or not)to attend Eastern, Kernodle or Hairston middle schools?
??????? How did GCS try to catch the flaws?

"Uh, GEEZ, I don't know..."

Thank you Stormy, indeed my tax dollars are most certainly my vested interest in the school system whether I have children in the system or not.
Let me put it to you this way Jon, my investment, no wait, EVERYONE IN GUILFORD COUNTY'S INVESTMENT in education is failing. I don't feel good about it and I know Stormy doesn't either.
You know what you do with a bad investment? Well if someone else is stupid enough to buy it from you, you sell it for what you can get for it. Unfortunately in most cases the best you can do is learn from your mistakes and move one.
When you make an investment you should first do your research. The School Board for what everyone reason did very poor research when checking the background of Dr. Grier. Why the research was done this way is beyond me. Just Google his name and you can locate what a detriment the guy is in under 30 seconds. Anyway Guilford County is left with a bad investment. You can choose to either flush more money down the commode with the Tidy Bowl man or learn from your mistakes and try to find a person of integrity this time.
I can say I honestly hope there is a next time and soon for the benefit of the 65,000+ children stuck in the hopeless system.
Otherwise Jon, the next investment of tax dollars that everyone will have is bunch of 20 year olds that are unable to read, write, count, or do anything viewed as productive.

My post of Grier's comments (or Amos Quick or Alan Duncan, for that matter) is no more a company endorsement of the school system than this blog is a company endorsement of the bloggers' comments. Rather, Jennifer and I pass along information as we obtain it as we do with newspaper reports.
Posted on August 18, 2006 10:10 AM
Good reporters don't just repeat the news. They probe, seek, investigate, ASK questions. ...for example, when Grier said "Geez, I don't know..." a good reporter would have challenged his lame response. WHY don't you know Terry? Your "GEEZ" response would leave me to believe that you don't care to answer?...WHO would know Terry?..
....Get it? But instead, whatever that used car salesman says, you take as the gospel truth. Sad...very sad.
Please Morgan, for the sake of future encounters with the swindler, Google his name. He has been ousted from numerous other systems. Geez, I wonder why????????

Thank you Morgan....
Your information has been greatly appreciated by
this concerned parent.
I am thankful to whomever it was that found, reported, and responded to the flaws. However,
the confusion comes from the continuing interchange of the words "enhancement" vs. "structural flaws".
I am also concerned about the pressure that this construction company has been placed under to get the work completed by a certain date.
Did they have the time and did they do this work properly? Is the mess going to be cleaned up so that my child is not exposed to "construction dust" and "paint vapors".
Parents can be a pain, but sometimes parents are right!!
If it were not for a meddlesome parent our school would still smell like the inside of an open sewer line. Last year, there were days that you could walk through the front glass doors and the "sewer gas" or "methane gas" odor could just about knock you down.
How an open sewer line in a school ever passed inspection seven years ago is the question?
I hope the same building inspectors are not working on the school this time.

Exactly, come one Jennifer and Morgan, be a Lois Lane for once in your life and ask some questions.
Granted the N&R is no Daily Planet, but come on, give it a try.
If the powers-that-be at the N&R really do not want any questions asked fair enough. Get a job at the paper on the other side of Market Street. I know they have questionmarks on their keyboards.

I heard Grier the first time....I just didn't believe him. And I didn't believe him this time either.
I guess we are lucky the buildings didn't mysteriously burn down.
Posted on August 18, 2006 3:25 PM
Fire Marshall Bill,
Funny thing you mentioned that "we are lucky the buildings didn't mysteriously burn down." Someone actually tried to start fires unsuccessfully at
Eastern Guilford a few years back. Only one of the
three fires successfully caused any real damage.
Posted on August 18, 2006 4:27 PM
Geez, I don't know about any fires....
Posted on August 18, 2006 7:57 PM
The fires were many years ago, at the high school (not the middle school), and an employee was charged with the crime.
Posted on August 18, 2006 9:24 PM
Thanks EG Parent. I did NOT know about those fires. An employee, huh?
-----This is a quiz:-----
What percentage of people in the US have ever been involved in one fire (home or office) in their lifetime?
What percentage of people in the US have ever been involved in 4 fires (home or office) in their lifetime?
Posted on August 18, 2006 9:33 PM
Geez, Fire Marshall Bill, I don't know.

Wise words from our beloved inovative leader Terry.
"It's not so much the plan that you have," Grier said. "It's what you do with the plan. Just having a good plan doesn't mean you'll improve."
Posted on August 19, 2006 11:25 AM
Confucius Terry says a good plan on a good day could also be a bad plan on a bad day. But a good plan on a bad day could also be a bad plan on a good day.

The real Confucius sums up Terry Grief with the following saying:
"The superior man is modest in his speech but exceeds in his actions".

"The Grief man exceeds in his speech but is modest in his actions".

Parent,
I was not aware of fires at Eastern Guilford High School, I was referring to fires at Eastern Guilford Middle school maybe 6 or 7 years ago.
One which actually caused damage to the building in the room where the washer, dryer and uniforms were stored.

I heard about an Athletic Director in McDowell County, NC one time that was being questioned about some equipment he had received money to buy.
The night before he was supposed to prove that the equipment had been purchased and received, the field house burned down.
Isn't that suspicious?
Posted on August 21, 2006 11:54 AM
Geeeeez, I don't know !!!!
Posted on August 21, 2006 1:41 PM
If there was no cover up then why was the cover up?
Why no press access? Why no timely answers to our questions? Why no pictures? Only after the heat is on do they come forward with the supposed truth. I read TG's supposed praises telling all the good he has done. My guts were green and spewing. Someone has helped him cover up his failures. When has anyone in our county called Dudley a success!
Get the fraud out of our county.

There should be an open to the public from 5:00 - 6:00 at all three schools on Sunday night or the schools should not open on Monday.
If they are not ready by 5:00 Sunday evening, they are not going to be ready for our students.
