Urban school climate survey released

The National School Boards Association's Council of Urban Boards of Education has released a school climate survey called "Where We Learn."

The group surveyed about 32,000 students in 15 districts across 13 states during the spring of the 2004-05 school year.

None* of the districts was in N.C., but their average enrollment was about 69,000. That's about the size of Guilford County Schools. The individual district's ranged in size from about 8,900 students to close to 427,000. Poverty ranged from 26 percent to 95 percent of total student enrollment at the district's surveyed. Combined, it was 61 percent. Guilford is in the 46 percent range.

Just thought you'd be interested in what kids from urban districts nationwide say about safety. It's kind of a mixed bag.

On one hand, 63 percent of urban students reported feeling safe at school.

On the other, 60 percent of students in grades 7-8 said there is a lot of fighting at their school. (About half of respondents in grades 4-6 and 9-12 said there is a lot of fighting in their school.)

*NOTE: This is a *national* survey; Guilford students were not surveyed. In fact, North Carolina was not represented at all. I just wanted to make that clear.

The Truth hurts but he should take it like a Man said:

I would venture a guess that even if Guilford county was asked to participate in such a study, that Grier would decline.

He doesn't want the truth known. Our children don't feel safe. Just go randomly ask one!

Heck, ask our teachers! They don't feel safe at times!

ASK the principals that have been assulted!

It's a no brainer what Guilford County's survery would yield.

Jennifer, anychance of getting the 10 day enrollment numbers for us?

I can tell you on day 7 NWMS is 1091, 68 over prediction of 1023.

Trailers for Trash said:

Debora, when will the rusty, musty old trailers be arriving?

Welcome to Trailer City.

I will make a prediction: (if not already fact)--when the new Northern school is finished, it will ALREADY be too small and trailers will have to be hauled in.

I have a dream. My dream is for ALL students to be housed in nice, safe buildings. And the Superintendent, School board members, and ALL their administrators will work out of trailers.

I know who you are said:

Yes, "The Real Truth", the magnets are still coming. In fact, more have been ordered.

It sounds to me like you're feeling a little left out.

I'll mail you one. Should I send it to Eugene Street?

Next time don't skimp and only take a half dose. Take your medication as directed.

The Real Truth,

My, my, what got your knickers in such a wad today? Some very heated remarks there to be sure. Some would even say that it is even hate speech, but I thought that was a violation of the Terms of Service on the News-Record blogs and could even get you banned? Since you are a close personal friend of Terry, let us know what other things he has to say about the citizens, parents, and taxpayers in this community. It should be enlightening?

By the way, the pattern of your mis-spelled words seem familiar and offer a suggestion of your true identity.

You think it is odd that we complain about trailers, busses, safety, racial issues and school bonds? We are the ONLY area in Guilford County that has been affected by ALL these issues in the past couple years.

Parts of High Point are being targeted because they have no representation on the school board. Susan Mendenhall has been completely worthless!

As for the magnets, the day Grier drove around for 3 hours with the Grier-ended magnet on his car was enough to make me forget about all the mistreatment of NHP...but only for a little while.

To statboy and Truth,
Guilford County Schools' enrollment as of Tuesday was 70,046, 324 students below projection. I don't have school by school numbers yet.

Guilford County Schools conducted a student climate survey this past school year which I blogged about in July 12.

To the Real Truth,

yes we ARE a nasty bunch. Mess with our children and this is what you get. You think you and your alike can come in and do what you like with us and get away with it?

The real truth is that this will NEVER end. As long as I live and breath in HP and this discrimination continues then those that are responsible and support it need to be prepared for anything.

Truth said:

Morgan, I didnt ask for the data but I am always interested in Statboy's numbers.

When will you get the school by school data?

The Real Truth,

How can you label small children as "racists"? That's going over the top of hate speech in my book. You must be a real lovely person.

Ashamed said:

I have a confession.

I am ashamed of myself.

I am ashamed that I bought a house in High Point and let the School Board of Guilford County take away my right to decide where my child gets educated.

HealTerry said:

As Terry says, "if it makes you feel better keep putting those" stupid "magnets on your cars" and writing ridiculas statements on blogs. It shows the rest of us who the idiots and racists are.

I think Terry Grier needs some racial healing!

Solutions said:

Many High Point parents who have rebelled against the school board suggested other solutions instead of bussing. "Give the struggling schools the resources ". The board did not listen. Solutions such as mission possible and academies are now being imlemented. NEVER has a diversity/bussing solution been discussed for Dudley or Smith. In fact if it wasn't for Judge Manning they probably would not have done anything. Its this kind of double standard that will continue to divide opinion in this county.

Real Truth. You seem to be in a postion of some influence. Instead of creating more bitter feelings try and put yourself in the postion of North High Point families. Start a process of healing!

Not ONCE did the school board put themselves in this postion.
Alan Duncan continues to watch his children grow up at his neighboring schools. All we asked for was the same.

If you give respect you will earn it in return.
It works both ways.

Morgan,

You said that the GCS enrollment is approximately 324 students below that which was projected.

Weren't approximately 300 students redistricted from SWM and SWH to Welborn and Andrews?

Do you think these students simply didn't show up at their new schools?

I almost croaked when I read "The Real Truth Post"

I hope the …… that wrote it, read it! Racism may be a sad hanger on from by-gone days, but social Jerry-Mandering is the perverted reciprocal. Forcing people to be what you want them to be is worse than people who ignorantly dislike other people. Hitler forced a nation to hate a people with a different belief. Would “Real Truth” support a Gestapo to force people to hate people with a different belief? Racism is sad, but the forced manipulation of societies norms by a few who have chosen to put themselves on deity like pedestals is just as bad as Hitler’s chosen few.

Morgan Josey said:

Quest,
I wouldn't jump to any conclusions just yet. That 324 number has already come down a bit since Tuesday. We should have a 10-day enrollment story on Saturday.

Lie Detector said:

Once Dr. Z gets hold of those numbers, they may show an increase and Grier may be going to the state for more money.

I know for a fact that the numbers at Welborn will be much less than projected. If Dr. Z's numbers show anything different I will, once again, know that Grier is a lying sack of poop.

THE REAL TRUTH

There goes the old race card again. Sorry but those tactics have been all used up. You must have marched in the big crowd of 200 people this past Labor Day weekend. Like the Rhino stated today seems like the same 200 people that march in everything. You sure have a lot of support in good ol Greensboro site of past Klan Rally/Communist rally.

As for "not accomplished anything"

I would say some of these posters have sure gotten your panties in a wad.

FYI most people aren't against bonds or new schools. They are against taking money from schools that were promised and putting the funds into completely new programs (i.e. Smith Academy) that was not on the bond ballot people voted for. The old bait and switch gets all too predictable.
