When the president comes calling
Morgan and I (along with many other reporters, editors, photographers, etc.) will spend most of tomorrow working on stories about President Bush. We'll be filing snippets throughout the day online, along with pictures and videos.
Check out our front page online for this coverage. There's a link that you can't miss - George Bush looking out from the page at you. You'll need Adobe Flash Player 9 to view everything there.
We'll try to get back to the Chalkboard as soon as possible.
In the meantime, read coverage of the visit so far: Bush visit confirmed; Falkener prepares; Fundraiser sold out; What would you ask the president?.
And check out tomorrow's paper. You'll find out how kids who get to meet the president - either by greeting him when he arrives or answering the Commander-in-Chief's questions in class - are getting ready.
Stick with us and we'll show you what happens when the president comes calling ...

Was there some sort of candidate forum Tuesday night?
Posted on October 18, 2006 8:39 AM
Numbers,
I believe that there was an attempt at one. It's a little obvious that it was a scheme to showcase the jackasses...meaning the Democrats, AND a ploy to add non-partisan races to their ticket.
Sad, very sad. I'm happy that some candidates declined to play their game.

Numbersgame,
The Guilford Education Alliance hosted a candidate's forum last night.
We did not cover it. I didn't see anything posted on their
Web site.

Thanks - I didn't see anything in the paper or on their website either.

I don't understand why the N&R did not cover the candidate's forum. It was very informative. Garth was a no-show. Deena was a no-show. However, Alan Duncan and Nancy Routh were there.
Written questions were submitted and most were used. It was the best forum I have been to in years. High Point Media and WFMY-TV covered it. This is one of the few events that I have seen that had TV coverage but no N&R coverage. Some speculate that the N&R does not want to give coverage to challengers, even when they know what they are talking about.

I think Deena was busy planting Mums over at Faulkner Elementary, Joe. That's why she couldn't be there.

If Deena, Dot, Susan or Kris are at Falkener I hope they are standing wih the protesters!!
I'm sure they can't be praising this school when they REALLY believe that economically disadvantaged kids can't learn.
These little kids at Falkener are smarter than any of these old coots that are supposed to represent them!

Why would a District 2 candidate go to a forum sponsored by a group whose known interests are those of Greensboro? Why would unchallenged board members be asked to speak at a candidates forum? We know their agendas from the past several years by their actions.
A debate in District 2 only for District 2 candidates sponsored by a neutral party would make mores sense. Both are not running at-large.

Garth should have made every effort to be there. His opponent was there and what she said made sense. She is a PTA person, don't underestimate her.

There in lies one of the key problems with Garth's opponent. The last thing this School Board needs is another PTA person. The current membership on the Board is way too top-heavy with unqualified people whose claim to fame is the local PTA.
I'm not saying that the PTA is unimportant, but is is not an acceptable training ground for serving on the Board of what is a multi-million dollar business. Every business has a finished product, in the case of the Guilford County Schools it should be well-rounded/well-educated children. That is not happening with the current make-up of a School Board grounded in the PTA.

And let's see there were how many people at this forum. Even the News & Record did not cover it. It was not well publicized. Didn't see anything in the alternative Thursday newspaper either.

Joe,
heard it from a friend of mine that there were about 40 people there.
Most were there fore the commissioners.
How did Bruce Davis do?
Was Deena there?

Tatersnmaters,
Are you saying that the last thing we need is another BOE member like Darlene Garrett? Remember she was one of those PTA Moms.
Posted on October 20, 2006 10:37 AM
No Terrina, thankfully Darlene Garrett is the exception to the PTA background comment. Unfortunately not all of the present School Board members are as well versed as Darlene.
I believe Kris Cooke and Marti Sykes stress their PTA involvement as a key qualification to being on the School Board. For being on an "educational advisory" committee OK, but not for the School Board.
The important difference is that Darlene is smart enough to pick up when Dr. Grier and his underlings are trying to blow one by everybody (similar to Anita Sharpe).
In closing an 11 member board should have a more diverse experience background than just the PTA. My intention is not to take jabs at anyone on any PTA's.
However if someone is out there that is well qualified from a corporate audit standpoint I say put them on the board. That is just what the voters and taxpayers of Guilford County need.

YES, YOU GOT IT TATERS!
DIVERSITY!!! Now yer talkin!! That's what we want! That's our # 1 PRIORITY AFTER ALL!!
For example, I bet you don't have taters for every meal. I imagine every once in a while you throw a mater in there to mix things up!
Same with the School Board. God Bless all the PTA moms. There should even be a country song saluting them, BUT our board should NOT be comprised of a majority of them!
We need diversity!!

Terrina,
We already have one Darlene Garrett, and we are grateful to have her. I would not like to cometemplate where we would be without her. The mantra of this district is diversity. Loading the board with PTA specialists does not create diversity, now, does it? If we elect people with diverse skills and backgrounds, we will have a stronger and more effective board. Any organization in which all of its members have the same skills and views is an organization without any depth or breadth, and it is subject to decision-making by groupthink. So, let's add someone with some financial mangement and auditing experience. Heaven only knows that this group is especially lacking in that skillset.

Stormy,
Did a hail storm hit you upside the head? Of COURSE we want a bunch of roll-over-do-what-Grier-tells-you mommies on the board! If Grier loses control of HIS board, what good will his shenanigans be then? The ONLY way he can continue what he's started in this county is to have a board full of Susie's, Krissy's, Dotty's and Smarti's that ask, "how high?" when he says JUMP!
Just wait. You'll see it in tomorrow's paper when Doug Johnson and Allen Clark endorse Ms. Maines.
Posted on October 20, 2006 12:25 PM
Debbie Maines will win courtesy of the power of the Simpkin PAC. The powers that be will not tolerate a bean counter on the Board. Moms such as Debbie are more sensitive to the needs of our chiltren. We need more moms on the board and less sensitive men.
The President's reign of terror in our country will cease when Ms. Pelosi and the New Democrats take over in Washington. Newt and his contract of America is history.
Posted on October 20, 2006 2:47 PM
What a big surprise when the N&R endorses Ms. Maines. I'm just counting on the voters of District 2 to be smarter than the N&R Editorial Board.
The last time I looked no one in District 2 was influenced by the Simkins-PAC.
You don't get it about the "bean-counting" That's done by Dr. Grief and his 7 dwarfs. The point is to have a qualified person already on the Board that knows how to audit behind someone else's work.
Does Hillary know about this Ms. Pelosi you are talking about? I thought she fancied herself to be the chief headknocker among the "New Democrats".
Posted on October 20, 2006 3:55 PM
Harold,
It is unfortunately true that partisan politics rules in Guilford County, especialy when this supposed to be a non-partisan race. I suppose that you are suggesting that the best qualified person won't win this race because the political powers will buy the election for Debbie Maines? If that happens, it will be a sad state of affairs in this county, but not surprising.
I agreee with "Sun" that there will be no surprise when the News-Record endorses Debbie Maines. They commented upon how impressed they were with her great energy and enthusiasm.
