Eastern fire ruled arson

Read our story here. (Note: You can now comment directly on the story, via a comment link at the bottom. This is similar to the blogs except you'll have to register with our system using a valid e-mail address. We're piloting a comment program and trying to work out the kinks. You can also comment on Thursday's graduation rate story.)

Find past coverage of the Nov. 1 fire that claimed Eastern here.

Fire officials sent the press release yesterday afternoon after offices had closed, so we weren't able to reach anyone for questions. We'll try to get more information today about how officials came to the conclusion that it was arson and how long had they suspected that might be the case.

UPDATE: We ran into some problems trying to speak to students Friday. Principal Lisa Cooke didn't want us on campus, according to information relayed through the public relations department. Cooke has not returned our calls the past two days. So we tracked down some students who we have been keeping up with periodically since the fire and asked them what school was like Friday.

Read what they had to say, and more from investigators, in Saturday's paper.

I don't think many are surprised at this outcome. It has been reported that their had been outher prank fires set in trash cans. Sadly, this is probably a prank gone VERY WRONG. I only hope that this doesn't hinder the insurance claims.

If the culpit is ever found, how could a person repay the amount lost, not to even mention the pain and inconvenience.

The principal said she just hoped the person would come forward so that the rest of the people could move forward. Now who in their right mind would come forward knowing that jail is waiting them, not to mention being ostricized.

Murrow said:

The News & Record Article online today talks about numerous fires at both this school and the middle school next door that feeds into it. However, I don't recall ever hearing much about them. It seems like that if a point would have been made to make an example out of people who were involved in these fires the article talks about, that someone would think twice before even thinking about doing something like this. If you let what seem to be small incidents go with slaps on hands, you end up with a mess like this.

Also, how is it that this school was only covered for 10 million dollars and it will cost 50 million to rebuild? Everyone knows that building materials and cost to rebuild go up and up, therefore, insurance policies for these highly valued buildings should include what it would cost to rebuild in the present, a true replacement cost if you will. Even though the premiums would cost more, it seems it would be worth it to me. It looks like taxpayers are going to cover the additional replacement costs instead.

When are the taxpayers going to hold these people accountable? I would like to place a vote not confidence in this school system. Hopefully other people will wake up and join me.

Grier on worse Graduation:

"We're asking them why," Grier said about the principals. "What do you need to do differently? We don't think our middle schools are getting the job done."

If anyone is not getting the job done its Dr. Terry Grier.

"FIRE" him now!

Stormy said:

Truth,

You know that Terry Grier never takes reponsibility for problems. It's always someone else's failings. He is well-known for passing the buck up to the board (I only did what the board asked me to do.), and passing it down to teachers when students fail (What do you need to do differently?). Why is it the teachers failures when students don't learn? The buck needs to stop at Eugene St. When are the good people of Guilford going to say enough already, Grier.

Question said:

Jennifer, there have been many hints over the years that the 1999 redistricting favored Grimsley and Page over Eastern and Dudley for instance. I understand that there were several phases to this redistricting.
Can you find out what these phase's were so we can understand Amos Quicks comments? I also notice that there are no maps of schools districts pre 1999 available. Could you help please?

Middle schools have been ignored over the last 6 years or so, all emphasis in HS and early ed. I have said many times that you don't just 'get dumb' when you enter 9th grade. Middle school is not rigorous enough for the AL children in the English area, although they are being pushed in math. The same kids that don't do well in 10th eoc's didn't do well in 8th grade on their eog's. It builds on itself.

soundly beat? I don't think 48 to 52% is 'soundly beat'-- but I agree that if Dot decides to run, she will be hard to beat. The reasons aren't the same as you think. Name recognition and Democratic support are the two that come to mind. In a county that votes democratic for the most part, the voters will follow the voice of their party.

Mr Huey was a teacher at Andrews. I think he knows better than most.

About Dot well the fact is that she has lost her support in her home base. We are fed up with her at Central.

Thats the difference this time.

DotKforSB,

In the spirit of the Holiday Season there is a special package waiting for you under the Christmas tree wrapped with green and white Garth bumper stickers that we had left. I hope this will cheer you up. It contains a nice variety of Kerry/Edwards "sorry you lost bumper stickers", gourment cat food, newest books on Socialism, a rebate form on the latest Volvo. This just shows you can't judge a book by it's cover being that the wrapping is all SW green.

Numbersgame said:

RT,

You know not what you say. You cannot find a single instance where I have called anyone by a disrespectful name. I have never made an assassination of character on this blog. (At least I think you meant assassination - not sure since you misspelled it so terribly). And there are NO bumper stickers on my car.

I know you like to stir up trouble and evidently you need some attention paid to you on this blog. Perhaps you would be better served by joining a support group.

DFSB: be blessed. Seriously, because I feel bad that you have so much spite when I've done nothing to you. Truth, Jennifer; it's okay. I'm prepared that this race will turn ugly and as I said, bring it on. I do need to make a correction, I was a democrat for many years, I'm now a republican. Yes, I'm a GOPer now...oh, let me translate for DFSB, I 'sold out', to use your words. Your words, not mine. I'm a little smarter than to use my skin color to get votes; you assumed I would when in essence, I have the children's best interest at heart. I didn't drag color into this, you did. Color has nothing to do with this campaign; as I said, I taught black students AND white students. I had straight "A" black students and straight "A" white students. Your ugly vile vitriol is shameful and disgusting and I'll pray for you because I'm a man of faith; for you don't even know me. What PTSA are you a member of? What school did you say you volunteer at? Where do you sub at? You certainly have a lot to say, and if you think YOU can do the job better, then go right on down to Eugene Street and apply, there is still a teacher shortage in this state. And then YOU spend one week...no, one day in a classroom, and then come talk to me. Perhaps, maybe we can talk about it over coffee sometime friend to friend because maybe after our conversation, you might end up being a supporter. Yes, I complained about a hot classroom because the comfort of my students was my priority and nothing was being done about it. And when I have to go out and supply my own reams of paper to make copies at a school copy machine, I have a problem with that. But I suspect it's more than that. The principal knew that the student population was going to change with redistricting and she knew she was going to get some "Mission Possible" teachers so cleaning house was her priority. No DFSB, it is not 'getting back at GCS' as you claim it is. It's about giving a voice to those who have no voice. It's about making sure ALL schools, from Andrews to NW, from SW to NE, from Dudley to Page have the tools and resources to get the job done. Is that happening? No.

Dr. Terry Grier on last year's Dudley graduation results.

"It's an anomaly". My question is why did he not notice it last year? We pay the high paid stat man 100K+ per year to do what?

Now let me ask you another thing. What do you think he thinks of Grimsley results for this year? If you ask me they are also an anomaly. My next question: Is there some cooking of the books going on here?
Is Grier trying his best to "close" the African American/White acheivement gap on paper only?

ECH,

You sound like you were an excellent teacher. Not having a contract renewed is not like losing your license say, for example, in the medical profession. It's not like you are a radiology technician or other type of medical technician that loses their license because of patients' complaints.

Once a teacher, aways a teacher. I would imagine your new school appreciates having a great teacher like yourself. In losing a great teacher Guilford County may just gain an excellent at-large school board rep in 2008.

What district do you live in? Have you also thought of running for your district seat? It would cost less money.

First of all Huey has announced his candidacy for the school board so he is not a private citizen. Second, I'm no more mean spirited than Huey and his Get Grier Out of Here band of crazy's.

Fact is E.C. Huey, you were fired from GCS. Your explanation to make room for Mission Possible Teachers, what a lame excuse. If you were a good teacher you would still be there. There is a huge teacher shortage in North Carolina and GCS and you can't keep a job in GCS! You apparently aren't a good teacher. You are running to get even. You hate Dr. Grier and the school board for firing you. You lay awake at night plotting to get even. The voters will know. You have been outed. As for character, it didn't take you long to call Dot a name. You don't sit on the moral high ground. You are a segregationist with an agenda to get even! You have no credibility as a fired teacher.

Yes I'm mean spirited toward segregationists. I don't like people who hide behind racist terms like neighborhood schools. You always want to draw the neighborhood line around people just like yourselves, excluding the needy or people of color. I don't like People that want to blame others for problems in society instead of looking in the mirror. People that will villify honorable people like Dr. Grier just so they can segregate their children. Forgive me for not turning the other cheek. I'm not a Quaker.

Give me a break,

You know not of what you speak. There are many in the NHP crowd on here who have never done any name calling. Quit making accusations when you do not even know who or what you are talking about.

I too agree Mr. Huey is a person of character. He should not have to listen to these ridiculous posts. It is time for this Dot person to post her real identify. However, that is not necessary because many of us know who she is.

Realistic Parent said:

The comments made toward Mr. Huey by TRT are sad and without cause. Unlike the majority who post on the Chalkboard who complain incessantly about the school system, at least Mr. Huey is endeavoring to put his words into action by selflessly offering his time as well as money to run on an issue that he feels strongly about.

Mr. Huey, you and I have philosophical differences on some things, but Godspeed on your journey.

However, as Mr. TRT has done, so have many others such as Truth, Numbersgame, Stormy, and a host of others who have derided Dr. Grier and slammed him at every available opportunity. So there's enough blame to go around. So when you point fingers at TRT be certain to set aside equal time and spank those who also get down in the gutter with the likes of TRT.

Give me a break! said:

______________

I know EXACTLY of what I speak. In fact you yourself referred to another poster as "twisted" earlier in this thread!!

Geez, if you are going to tell lies, at least make sure they are believable lies that aren't so easily refuted!

Like I said, there's no excuse for calling Mr. Huey such names. He's conducted himself as gentleman and doesn't deserve such treatment. However, for you to claim that the NHP crowd hasn't done more than it's share of name-calling and finger-pointing is absurd.

Are you Cosmo? said:

Give me a break,

You are right that the comments about Mr. Huey are mean-spirited and unwarranted, but they go beyond even that, it's a racist slur.

This newspaper has a Terms of Service policy that prohibits harassment for many reasons including race, which the term used clearly is. The term used is disparaging and used when the speaker deliberately wishes to cause great offense, just like other racial slurs. Of course, the newspaper reserves the right to use descretion whether to remove such posts containing racial slurs, but in situations like this, they should do so. Comments that they have found objectionable have been removed from the Chalkboard blog as well as some of their other blogs, many of which are not even racial slurs or epithets. The N&R should find the use of this term objectionable enough to remove, just like any other racial slur or epithet used to cause great offense.

If any of the "NHP crowd" should make a racial slur, it should be promptly removed as well, without urging from any of their critics. We'll see if the newspaper representatives that monitor this blog agree that it is a prohibited racial slur. Even public figures shouldn't have to tolerate being called by a racial slur. People can disagree with Mr. Huey's views on education without resorting to racial slurs. Of course, we know that some people who can't win with logic always resort to racial ephithets.

I'm curious as to whether Dot Kearns would condone such treatment of Mr. Huey, since "Dot for School Board" is speaking on her behalf as a poster. Would she disavow "Dot for School Board"?

The Real Truth said:

Are you Cosmo,

E.C. Huey's firing is common knowledge. He admitted above that his contract to teach at Andrews wasn't extended. That means he was fired! Also just because E.C. Huey is African American doesn't mean that he doesn't want to segregate himself from others. Besides he's taken the stand as a segregationist not me so ask him to explain it. I cannot. You are right it doesn't make sense. Neighborhood schools mean segregated schools period! E.C. Huey needs to explain to the African American Community why he supports segregation. I suspect that E.C. Huey is simply a political opportunist jumping on whatever wagon he can trying to get elected so he can get even with Dr. Grier and BOE for firing him. It won't work for E.C. Huey, the voters will find out!

You Go Mr. Huey,

I never said anything about the NHP crowd, I refered to the Get Grier Out of Here Crazy's. That isn't a geographic statement. Uhh, but you took it personal as a NHP person. Uhhmm, wonder what that means? Since I didn't refer to you but you had to jump in an defend yourself. Do you identify yourself as a Get Grier Out Of Here Crazy? Why didn't you speak up when your neighbors (assuming you never say anything bad about anyone) made ugly comments about the Administration and the BOE? Because you are a hypocrit! You have no credibility! You only want to stand up and defend your fellow segregationist and let all others be villified.

I remain true to my convictions: segregation is wrong and those who support it are bad or at least ignorant people!

Bill Davidson was an ex-teacher. More or less an unknown, he received 46% of the votes against Kris Cooke in the 2004 elections. Not too bad for an ex-teacher.

Good luck Mr. Huey.

Are you Cosmo? said:

FYI,

That is true about Bill Davidson. And, you will recall that his opponent's supporters trashed him and his record as a teacher as well. This was also done in an effort to diminish his credibility. He found it almost impossible to defend his record with the whisper campaign against him, but he came within a whisker of winning against an incumbent who had never had an opponent in a previous election.

The Real Truth said:

No racism was intended. I cannot respect anyone who wants to segregate children. The whole issue of race was brought up by you Get Grier Outta Here Crazy's assuming that E.C. Huey would win the African American vote because he is African American. He'll get your vote on the segregated schools / neighborhood schools issue and the Get Grier Outta Here issue. I just want to point out that Huey doesn't represent African American interests or enlightened whites either and therefore African Americans won't support him. Is it Ok to call Dot, Aunt Dottie because of her age? E.C. Huey calls her Aunt Dottie. That is discrimination against her age. When E.C. Huey used the term he intended to degrade Dot. Whats good for the goose is good for the gander! You have a double standard. Inconsistent. How about if we just call E.C. Huey a failed teacher who happens to be a segregationist? A man who wants seperate schools.

Another thing, If you people like Huey so much then why were you so afraid to send your precious children to school at Andrews when he was a teacher there? You advocated private schools over the prospect of having E. C Huey as a teacher for your children. Many of you even commented about poor teacher quality there. I think you made comments about violence, the worst school in the state... but your savior E. C. Huey was there!

Obviously he was part of the problem at Andrews and was fired as a result. Now that he wants to get even with Grier for loosing his job, You support him for school board but wouldn't let him teach your kids. In fact your were terrified of having E. C. Huey as a teacher. Remember that is what got all you Grier Haters started. The fear of having to send a child to Andrews where E.C. Huey was a teacher.
Hypocrits!

TRT or dfsb or whomever...as I said, I will pray for you. And if you think your words will scare me, you have another thing coming. Yes, I'm putting my name out there, but it is very easy to hide behind a blog board. You won't reveal who you are, you won't tell us what school you volunteer at or sub at or what PTSA you're a member at, but you have a lot to say. But another 50 of your neighbors visited my website today. And I'm extending the olive branch to you in person so that you may convey your feelings in person, I'll still buy you that cup of coffee so we can talk in person. Neighborhood schools is NOT segregated schools; if you go read my updated blog on my site today, you'll see my explanation. Hey TRT, i'll bet you didn't know that I broke up some of those bloody fights at Andrews. I'll bet you didn't know that I put out one of the many bathroom fires so it wouldn't turn into a catastrophe where we would be reading about it in the papers the next day. But TRT is so hung up on me being a so-called segregationist that the explanation will get lost in the shuffle. Instead of living in the past, look ahead to the future. Oh, BTW, sorry I called Dot 'Aunt Dottie'..., I guess I should reduce the political discourse here on this blog to the lowest common denominator like you have.

God bless you...

I've deleted the comments or references that we agree were objectional/racist/tasteless on this strand. I won't repeat them here because that kind of defeats the purpose and makes the more than 2 hours I just spent combing through posts somewhat meaningless. (Our computer system can be slow and was being rather cantankerous today.)

I went back through Nov. 1 and cut out some other personal attacks that I found using real names and comments alleging criminal conduct. Those were also inappropriate and I should have deleted them when I saw them. I apologize for taking so long.

I don't know how many times I have to ask you folks this, but could we please keep it civil? I know there's lots of frustration and anger out there. Believe me, we got that message a long time ago. Being civil doesn't mean you can't make strong, rational arguments.

I'm closing comments on this strand and hoping that the level of conversation will perhaps be brought up a notch in subsequent strands.
