Commissioners approve money to start rebuilding Eastern

Commissioners on Thursday approved the release of $8 million in insurance money to begin the rebuilding of Eastern High, which was destroyed by fire Nov. 1.

About 80 or so parents, students and community members from Eastern showed up for Thursday's county commissioners meeting. They had a lo-o-ong wait. Commissioners didn't even get to the school issue until after 11 p.m.

Two parents spoke, telling commissioners that they feel the school board did not give serious consideration to using the Carolina Corporate Center (former Lucent Technologies building) as a temporary site. Instead, the board has pushed forward with plans to create a so-called "pod village," a series of modular classrooms that are bigger and sturdier than typical mobile classrooms that are used to create extra space at schools.

Several Eastern parents at Thursday's meeting were worried that the school system wouldn't be able to complete the pod village before the 2007-08 school year starts on Aug. 28.

1. Hold a meeting for community input.
2. School board votes how they want anyway.
3. Parents threaten to go to commissioners and
try to stop funding.
4. School board, administration and commissioner
talk before commissioners meeting.
5. Commissioners say "we are not in charge of
school policy. We only handle funds."
6. Commissioners vote how school board wants and
releases funds.

(Hint: When an item is last on the agenda you know it will never be what the parents want.)

You quoted Sharon Ozment as saying that the timing of the Eastern first, early in the school year, worked in the district's favor. I fail to understand how any devestating fire like the one at Eastern could be beneficial to a school district.

Tuesday night, the Board of Education will name the NW area elementary school. This is important and if the past is any indication of the future, they will come up with non-inspiring bad name. People have sent 51 nominations in by the web-site. Most did not bother to give details or supporting information that is required by the instruction. The talley was 4 for "Pleasant Ridge Elementary School" and 47 for names other than "Pleasant Ridge Elementary School". The Projet Team voted 4 to 0 in favor of "Pleasant Ridge Elementary School" and has sent it to the BOE. The staff endorsed "Pleasant Ridge Elementary School' which is in violation of the current instruction on this matter. There are suppose to send all names with all supporting information to the BOE.

If people don't turn out in numbers on Thursday night, we are going to be stuck with an awful name. Pls come out and give the old college try for an inspiring name that will uplift students as well as faculty.
