Eastern, Smith Academy construction on board agenda

The school board meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday, usual location (712 N. Eugene St.) Check out the agenda here.

A couple items of note:

Eastern Guilford: Specifically, requesting county commissioners to release money from state lottery funds and state public school building capital funds to combine with $5 million in insurance money to pay for the initial work to rebuild Eastern.

(Note: The insurance money is what the district has received so far. Eileen Townsend, chief of insurance with the state Department of Instruction, said Friday that no settlement amount has been reached yet. She doesn't expect that until mid-January at the earliest, but most likely late January. State adjusters are still cataloging the loss and the district still has to assess the damage and come up with what it feels is the loss amount, she said. The two will be compared and an amount settled, she said.)

In all, the $8 million for Phase I construction at Eastern would "cover design costs, soft costs (advertising fees, bid document reproduction costs, engineering/topography/boundary surveys, soil test borings), grading and parking," according to the agenda.

Also for Eastern, check out a proposed, revised calendar to bring the now separated campuses onto the same calendar. Under the proposal, neither campus would lose part of spring break due to make up school or work days and would share the same grading periods.

Here are the current calendars for underclassmen and upperclassmen.

Academy at Smith: District officials want to use alternative contracting methods to do work there. Based on the agenda, it looks like the alternative method (breaking down more of the work into smaller packages to bid instead of all the work at once) is being recommended as a way to increase minority/women business enterprise participation in the project.

I thought the Academy at Smith was suppose to be finished in Dec.,then April (remember we had to move fast to get the building and how much extra has this cost!) so why are we now in Jan., discussing new ways to bid out contracts?

quest said:

Debora,

I suspect that the cost has just doubled - again.

Isn't $8 million for Phase I at Eastern a little pricey? That sounds like a lot of money to basically get ready to get ready, isn't it? What am I missing here? I guess this is why it's going to cost more than $50 million to rebuild this school. Wow, are the taxpayers in this county getting hosed.

And, breaking up teh Academy at Smith into smaller packages to bid so that more can go to minority contractors sounds like it will add cost as well. It looks like a contractor's nightmare for coordination. When something isn't done right, who will be held accountable if no one is responsible?

Stormy,
don't you think they would have to report to someone? Maybe Joe Hill or the new construction guy.

It looks like they are losing two days of Spring Break as a result of this.

Are the teachers that worked the days the students were out going to be paid overtime? :)

All: what's the likelihood of Deena apologizing tomorrow night for her ugly rants? I put the full text of her comments on my website. I will be updating my blog tomorrow and I may prepare some additional public comments for tomorrow's meeting.

Mr. Huey,

I want you to know how much I appreciate your taking the time each meeting to speak in front of the school board.

I and my significant other always agree with you 100%.

I also like your closing sentence.

Thanks - I look forward to your serving the district in 2008!

Thank you for the kind words, Quest. My words are from the heart, and they represent the central them of my campaign, putting children first. The primary is still a year away, but the campaign is gaining momentum and word is getting around, as evidenced by nearly 800 visitors to my website in a month's time. If you desire change, if you want better for your schools, join me, and my campaign...our campaign to take back our schools and our board from the politicians.

These were the comments I was prepared to deliver tonight. These are on my website. As you now know, Deena didn't and wouldn't apologize. I'll have a response on my blog tomorrow.
=======================================
E.C. HUEY’S PREPARED REMARKS TO BE DELIVERED TUESDAY, 9 JANUARY 2007 TO THE GUILFORD COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION

Good evening Mr. Chairman, Dr. Grier, members of the Board. Happy New Year. E.C. Huey, 6213 W. Friendly Ave., Greensboro.

Racism equals ignorance. And ignorance is sin.

Instead of me commenting this evening with regards to the ongoing situation involving Eastern Guilford H.S., or student achievement or the ongoing lack of supplies at many of our high schools, I am forced to come to you this evening with a plea for an explanation, or a clarification or better yet, an apology.

During a discussion and debate of the Very Strong Needs program at the last meeting, a Board member used several racially insensitive and derogatory statements that, in my opinion, were uncalled for and were a poor choice of words. Speaking on behalf of right-minded, right-thinking citizens and taxpayers who always have the children’s best interest at heart, we feel an apology is in order.

Specifically, these said comments were used in context in discussing what parents do to help their son or daughter achieve their full potential. Whether these children are advanced learners or not, I agree with the premise that all parents have the responsibility to do everything humanly possible to ensure that their child does in fact achieve their full potential.

I’m sorry if I disagree, but this is not promoting a “derogatory ideology” as was inferred by a certain board member.

In addition, as a father and an educator, I find myself constantly teaching and preaching the value of respect and diversity to my daughter and my students, respectively. We are supposed to be the adults. We’re the grown folks. You are supposed to be the ones setting the example for those students, those children you represent.
And as an elected official, you took an oath to faithfully execute the office to which you serve. As such, you, as an elected body, have a duty to maintain and uphold the respect to which you are given.

Both myself, the parents of Guilford County School children, the citizens and taxpayers across this county, eagerly await both your response and apology.

Thank you, God bless you and may God bless the children of Guilford County.

Amen Eric.

Of course though, we will NEVER get an opology.

I know, and I was not holding my breath for one. My blog entry for today, though, will tell it all, and I'm updating it as I speak.

E.C. Huey said:

Let me also say this, her flippant response says it all. She wants to bring that "Earl & Skip sideshow" mess to the School Board and there are enough progressive parents out there that will not let this happen.

Mr. Huey,

Thanks for posting your comments on this blog. Many of us look forward to your comments at each meeting and were disappointed that you and 3 others were moved to the end of the meeting.

I fear that Deena and her supporters may vehemently disagree with your comments. Be aware.

E.C. Huey said:

NG: it's okay. I just updated my website blog to reflect my comments surrounding Deena's response last night. NG, I know this campaign may get ugly as things heat up and I'm ready for anything that gets thrown my way. I know who I have on my side and when you have the best interest of children at heart, nothing will stand in your way.
