Feds: Youth drug use decreases
Here's a report from the federal government on teen drug use declining.
For another source on teen drug use, check out the National Youth Risk Behavior Survey (data from 1991-2005) compiled by the Centers for Disease Control.

Really....because drugs are running rampant in our schools. The general public would be shocked at how much contraband is found inside our schools on a daily basis, it's enough to make your stomach turn.

Jennifer/Morgan,
Excuse me for posting off-subject, but since there's no strand for the bond meeting last night, I'll post here.
Can you tell us what type of renovation was intended at Central High School at a cost of $45 Million?
That project seemed to come out of the blue. What could possibly be planned for that school that would cost that much??
And, did I hear correctly - Southwest High School has 29 trailers and the bond would only add 80 seats to that school? At the rate of growth at SW, there will be 60 trailers there in the next few years.

HP Central was added at the 'request of a board member'-- wonder who?
I didn't hear how many trailers there was, but I wanted to shout that the overcrowding was directly linked to redistricting!
Get a clue?
Why do only a few BOE members seem to know what their schools need?

Debora,
Actually, the over crowding came when they moved our wonderful 9th grade academy to the main building so they could put The Academy at Central in which from what I have heard from numerous sources only has about 50 students enrolled right now. My 11th grader (IB Student) has 2 classes in the Tomlinson Building which is supposed to be the building for The Academy at Central when I questioned why, they stated they had the room and we do not right now because of the over croawding in the main building. We are to be two seperate schools but we are not right now. We also have about 10 teachers without an office or classroom so they just travel from both buildings everyday. We begged them not to implement The Aademy without thinking it through but of course just like always you can talked until you are blue in the face and they still do not listen.

Dear Central MomX3,
thanks for the update on the Acadamy at HP! I had wondered how it was going, but the BOE never seems to get the real truth when they ask!
I was actually talking about the overcrowding at SW when I referred to redistricting. My sources say there are several hundred empty seats at Andrews, and more trailers at SW. Poor planning.
On the point of teachers moving classrooms- at Northern, all teachers will have a central work area with a cubby and access to computers. No teacher will own a classroom. They will be working more like a college professor, using rooms that are available. Did you realize that at any given time that 25% of classrooms in a HS are empty, yet we bring in trailers so that teachers have their own classroom. This is a tradition that must be stopped. It would be much cheaper and better use of space to take 3 classroom and renovate them with a small closed meeting room(parent conferences, confidential meetings) and make teacher workspaces out of the rest of that space. Then utilize every classroom for every period. Teachers will balk, but we must start thinking outside of the box and change things. Money is tight, we get more students and at many schools there is no room for additional trailers.

Debora,
You speak too much sense. The problem is that even if it was suggested it probably would not get a good answer.

Anybody that would vote to give this board and this super, with their record of absolute incompetence in planning and money management, ANY bond money is crazy. Period.
