Nearly 770 students dropped out of Guilford high schools
The state on Wednesday released its annual dropout report.
Guilford's rate rose from 2.98 percent to 3.41 percent. When you look at how many students that represents, you see that 766 students dropped out, up from 644 the year before. That's 122 additional students. This is looking at just grades 9-12. The report also includes information for the 7-12 range and includes some elementary schools where students dropped out.
Check out individual schools here. (It's hard to read the report, which is tiny and not in Excel format. I apologize, but we didn't have time to convert it.)

Jennifer,
Thanks, but I also have to caution readers here that the drop out rate is a far different number than the graduation rate. Even at 770 students dropping out, the drop out rate is only 3.41%. Compare this to the, I think more realistic, graduation rate of approximately 63%.
The successful education of children in high school in Guilford County is failing.
Something must change and I believe stronger, stricter, and consistent discipline is the answer.

OMIGAH!! I had to go to the Oak Hollow Mall in High Point tonight. I haven't been there since the High Point leaders screwed the North High Point folks with the Choice Plan. I vowed to never go back to any store past the Chris Dixon bridge and I haven't until now.
The mall was like a ghost town! What happened to the Gap? Goody's? The Disney Store? Wendys? Afterthoughts? THE SHOPPERS???? The lights in the food court? The place was empty.
I say we rename it after Dot Kearns...once it officially closes, of course.

When the mall finally closes down we are going to open it as a new school and bring all of the kids in High Point together.
Signed.

As Darlene said, "People said they wouldn't go to Andrews and they didn't".
North High Point said they would boycott High Point businesses for taking away their school, leaving their houses on the market for many, many months and they did. North High Point businesses, the Paladium and surrounding areas are thriving. Friendly Shopping Center is reaping the benefits of the High Point Choice Plan and the Midnight Pulled Out of the Pocket Map C.
Thank you Mayor Becky, Dot, and Susie. You have equalized the all the High Point Schools. We are enjoying collecting all our tuition money, watching our waiting lists grow and excited about our expansion plans.

My sources inside Andrews tell me preliminary EOC scores trickling in indicate they're not going to make it again this year, and this with only about 900 students in the building...
Unbelieveable...

Dot will say that they do not have enough diversity.
How do they really solve this?
Posted on February 1, 2007 12:12 PM
You Grier and Dot haters just love bad news don't you. your hearts are filled with hate! You need counselling!
EC Huey, "You heard...." to bad you don't know because you were fired from a teaching position at Andrews. I see the drop out rate in Randolph County where you teach after being fired from GCS has much higher drop-out rate. You must be doing a bang-up job. You should be proud of yourself, Not!
I think its Garth's fault, after all he's on the school board!
The Real Truth

It seems that the kids that stayed at Andrews aren't doing any better. The kids that were supposed to be bussed to Andrews didn't come in great enough numbers to help and I would bet my house that the kids that were bussed to Southwest aren't doing any better.
So Dot...where are all the winners in your Map C3-star that was concocted in secrecy? You should be ashamed of yourself!! You owe these kids an apology for your ignorance.
(Include The Real Truth in your apology because he bought your BS)

TRT:
I bet Garth has done more for T. Wingate Andrews in his 2 months than Dot has done in her 49 years on the school board. Admit it, she's useless.

The real truth.
If you believed what you say you would use your real name.
Ms Fernandez,
Lets not publish if people don't have the character to sign their names

Oh hello, it's my third detractor, TRT. Good to hear from you again.
You know, trying to engage a liberal in intelligent conversation will be pointless and I will not use this forum to repeat myself from earlier posts/forums which are off-topic.
So I'll just say this...try channeling your negativity into something positive, like adopting a Smith or a Dudley teacher or student or classroom; buy a teacher some supplies, become a lunch buddy to a student, or you can go to my website and host a coffee with me and your neighbors and maybe we can have some intelligent thoughtful dialogue one on one, like I'm starting to do countywide.
But you probably won't. And that's okay.

TRT aka EMK
I see you couldn't get out to get your meds refilled today because of the snow.
We all like to hear the truth not some bs redistricting plan that failed miserably.
Now that is the truth.
P.S. Please get over Garth winning. He is here to say.
LOVE YOU GARTH!

oops meant EMK or is it PL? or JO?
Posted on February 1, 2007 2:54 PM
David,
People have use different names on many of the N & R blogs. It is okay. We all know who TRT is. No one pays any attention to her. As long as the site stays "clean" none of us have a problem with alias. Many use alias because of where they work.
Mr. Huey,
Keep up the good work!
Posted on February 1, 2007 2:59 PM
Thanks Sally. I appreciate all of the kind words and early support countywide.
This "TRT" person has shown up here on the blogs before and has tried to muster up false rumors, even calling me an Uncle Tom. TRT asked openly and publicly several weeks ago why I was not teaching at Andrews anymore and I explained that my contract wasn't renewed.
Truth obviously is not a supporter, and could very well be one of the two people that sent me hate-mail to my website recently.
I was never fired from Andrews. I fulfilled the terms of my contract from beginning to end professionally and it was not renewed for this year. Not having a contract renewed is not the same as being fired, as TRT wants people to falsely believe.
The principal was interested in cleaning house and having a more experienced staff as well as making room for the "Mission Possible" teachers coming in. At the same time, when I talked to a board member earlier in the year to complain about no a/c in my classroom and expressed problems with getting supplies. My principal didn't like that I talked to a board member.
This despite my 10th graders experiencing a double-digit increase on last year's state writing test.
I have a clean record and I'm more than happy to post my complete GCS employee file on my website if there are any lingering doubts among anyone. I wouldn't be running if my credibility were an issue and it isn't.
E.C. Huey

EC Huey,
Your contract not being extended means they didn't want you back! That means you were fired! They probably just didn't do it in the middle of the school year because they couldn't hire a replacement in the middle of the year. I'm glad you found a school district with lower standards so you can earn a living. But running for school board just to get even and joining a band of nuts is shameful. You need to move on... let it go.
David Colin,
You Grier haters get all worked up anytime somebody posts on this blog in support of the school system or a school board member or gives you a dose of your own medicine. Its ok to say what ever you want as long as its against our schools? You never seem to get upset no matter what peolpe say as long as its against GCS, Dr. Grier or Dot. You take great delight in bad news. Someone posts under the name Dot Rot but thats ok because he's one of you Grier haters. You people started the meaness and character assassinations. Off base negative comments about our city. But that is ok as long the poster is a Grier hater?
EC Huey , sees what he thinks is an opportunity to get even with Dr. Grier so he jumps in bed with you. I think he's probably a nice man but misguided and influenced by hate.
HP Private school ASSN,
You even lash out at Beck Smothers, she's not on the school board. She has nothing to do with school districting or anything elsethe schools. You need a civics lesson! Is that what you learned in your private school.
The Real Truth

TRT (aka EK)
Oh contrar! Becky was involved in the private meetings of the traveling road show before the High Point Choice Plan was presented to the public. That shows how much YOU DO NOT KNOW about old HP politics and what goes on behind closed doors with old HP alumni. It was always about making Central whiter and brighter. It was never about helping Andrews. Sorry you got fooled.
Mr. Huey,
We believe you and have much faith in you. To TRT "whatever". Mr. Huey if you did get "fired" from Andrews (and we know you didn't) consider it a promotion. We know all about teachers complaining to school board members. I remember quite well the the board meeting when the Central teachers wrote about their doubts on the Cooking Academy and were stiffled. You don't have to explain yourself to anyone. Many of us know much of what went on at Andrews and teachers leaving. Many of us have personal friends who taught there at one time. We know about the past teacher who spilled the beans on those people giving out answers to tests a few years ago and the history of the person who told. It would make a wonderful soap opera. Wow!
I am sorry that TRT is such an unhappy person and you have to endure hate mail. I hope you can block certain mail on your computer.
You have many supporters out there and the numbers are growing. Your group forums are a wonderful idea to get in touch with your constituents. I know you will love working with Garth and some of the others.
You have will have a multitude of campaign workers when the time comes. You see what strong group efforts there are when these forces can help shut down a mall; you know the kind of influence that will be working for you in 2008. The multitudes reach far and wide and are an ever growing underground movement.
We welcome you aboard.
Posted on February 1, 2007 6:00 PM
Wrong again, TRT!!
Beck Smothers (as you call her) was herded into a back room and sold on the idea of the Choice Plan before it was ever unveiled. She supported it 100%. Well, let me clarify. She supported the plan as it was described to her. We all soon learned that what we got was totally different than what we were told.
World Class??? Riiiight.
Don't try to correct any of us on the wheeling and dealings of High Point. We've lived it.

Mr. Truth,
Don’t put words in my mouth.
I fell the same about Dot Rot as I do about you.
You have a name use it.
If people won’t use their name I ignore them no matter what their position.

TRT: if I was influenced by hate, I wouldn't running to give children a voice, it is about putting children first, not politics. Once again, you seem to have a lot to say and you know nothing about me.
For the record folks, I have invited TRT many times to come sit down and have coffee with me at Starbucks so that we can dialogue about the issues because obviously, TRT has some strong opinions. To date, TRT has not responded. Therefore, I have nothing else to say to this individual.
I guess I can't count on TRT for a campaign donation :)
Sean Hannity is right...you cannot have an intelligent, thoughtful, sustained dialogue with a liberal.
I'm running on the issues and the issues are very clear, very defined, and as a local writer told me recently, it is breathtaking to finally have a regular sustained dialogue on local education issues leading up to the primary next May.
HPPSA, thanks again for the kind words. 1,400 visitors to my website in two months tells the story. I've met so many nice people so far and I know I'll meet so many more. I actually welcome the hate mail; I've created a hate mail section on my website, so bring it on. I'm not scared, I'm not dropping out, I'm not going anywhere, it just makes my resolve stronger.
Yes, the movement is growing, as evidenced by the growing numbers of folks giving me thumbs ups at the Board meetings when I speak. The movement is change...change for the better, change for the sake of our children.
I'm running on the issues and only the issues. GCS has got to move from worst to first. I have a defined platform and plan to make that happen. Join me...join us, and yes, TRT, you too...join us, so we can make a difference for once and do some good for our schools. The status quo is dead. And change is at hand!

Way to crack this case Lois Lane!!!
Next can you please find out how many students have transferred out of Guilford County to:
1. Private Schools
2. Public schools in Forsyth, Randolph, and
Davidson.
Please feel free to include Dot's relatives as some of the escapees to the surrounding counties.

I pick Village Idiot.

David,
I would be happy to use my real name if everyone else did except for the fact that I don't think it would be safe. Some of the people that post here are crazy. I have seen threats and pure nastiness on this blog. I've just tried to give some back to those demented ones. Nevertheless, I would be too afraid to post. Some of these people act like Klansmen!
EC Huey,
First, I haven't sent hate mail to you. I wouldn't do that period. I don't hate you. I don't know you. I bet I would like you on a personal level. You seem like a nice person. I just jumped in this because you choose to jump in bed with a bunch of nuts. You make even -tempered statements while you let your attack dogs make ugly comments about Dr. Grier and Dot Kearns for your own political gain. You want to swift boat them (from the George Bush Carl Rove play book). Let some real nasty people throw untruths and charachter assasinations at your opponents while you try to remain above the fray. Garth did it too but he wasn't really challenged so he won. Garth's victory had more to do with decent people not wanting to run because they didn't want to face a bunch of nut jobs calling them names and villifying them. Debbie Maines is a real nice person but she didn't make a worthy opponent for Garth. (by the way since Garth has been on the board I haven't seen him say anything I disagree with yet, so far he's doing a good job) You are a political opportunist. The enemy of your enemy is your friend. Dot Kearns will beat you if she runs again, save your money! You will need all you can get if your contract doesn't get renewed again.
The Real Truth
Posted on February 2, 2007 11:27 AM
And that's why I'm extending the olive branch so that you can get to know me :) Even-tempered statements? Do you agree with any of my positions? Or are you totally against everything I stand for?
Posted on February 2, 2007 2:40 PM
BTW, i'm not running to settle a score or get even, I'm running to give those children and teachers and parents who don't have a voice, a new voice. I do not have a political agenda. So while I'm sorry I don't have you on my side, and I would be extremely interested in hearing your opinions on the issues that matter, I hope you will join me in one aspect, that the children in this county need to come first.

Mr. Huey,
You are a good person.
Posted on February 2, 2007 4:13 PM
Thank you, quest...thank you
Posted on February 2, 2007 6:55 PM
Too all you north High Point people:
Let's settle this once and for all
You people are ignorant, selfish, spoiled, rich, bufoons who think you know what's best for your children.
You do not know what's best for your children.
Only Dot and I know.
Whatever your interests or whatever you think your rights as parents are, they can and will be superceded by Dot's and my own desires.
Whatever be your politics, philosophies or desires, they do not hold a candle to and pale beside those of
Dot and I.
Dot and I reserve the right to conscript your children to our philosophy and beliefs and reserve the right to impose on you what we think is right. So help us , God.
You somehow cannot see that we have only the best interest of all children and not just our own.
Where we got this knowledge and who conferred this power on us is not for you to know. We don't have to explain.
Hopefully this will put this matter to rest.
