Volunteer toolkit
The Guilford Education Alliance recently posted a volunteer toolkit on its Web site. The alliance partnered with the Guilford County Council of PTAs, Guilford County Schools and Volunteer Center of Greensboro to create a 10-step toolkit designed to strengthen local volunteer programs.

Will these kits include bullet proof vest for the volunteers?
Jennifer or Morgan, why did the News & Record not report about the student who was arrested at Dudley for carrying a loaded gun to school? Apparently he was being investigated for another crime when the gun was discovered. This was on Fox news. Are the News & Record reporters being told not to report any school violence? Also will this student be suspended for the year? We would like you reporters to follow up on this.

I wonder if this incident will be reported to DPI. DPI is supposed to track these per NCLB. A school that has too many incidents is supposed to be labeled as "persistently dangerous" and must allow students to opt out.
I'll bet Raleigh never hears about it.

I heard it on the grapevine that the removal of SRO's will be on the next schoolboard agenda. Jennifer/Morgan, can you confirm?

Given that the News & Record has broken news on a countless occasions about school violence, I don't know how one would get the impression that reporters here were told not to report those instances. Jennifer started making calls on this last week and has not heard back from the officials. As for me, I have been out of the office on many days working on a project.
I'll look into the SRO item.

Morgan,
Is the student at Dudley going to be suspended for one year?

Removal of SROs is scheduled to be dicussed at the Feb 8th BOE meeting. If you have an opinion one way or the other, please plan to speak up.

I believe the discussion will only be about middle school SRO's. Aren't we mandated by state law to have an SRO in HS?

Pulling out the SROs would be a huge mistake. The teachers and principals should have the final say. They are the ones who have to deal with the problems on a daily basis. They know what goes on in our schools and what the presence of having SROs prevents in our schools. We have not heard of any SROs using the tasers. Pepper spray was used during a fight at Western the other day. One girl suffered breathing problems according to the newspapers then was okay. God help the first SRO who does have to use a taser.
We are constantly hearing of more and more fights in our middle and high schools. It continues to get worse. Students are afraid to walk down certain halls in their schools. Children should not have to be afraid to use the bathroom in their own school.
Certain students blatently disobey the rules. To mention one of Deena's favorite words it is "noncompliance". The teachers can do nothing. Other students witness this type of behavior on daily basis and wonder why they have to obey the rules while other students do not. What message does this send those students who (for now) are obeying the rules?
Take out the SROs and watch the number of violent incidents rise. We will be watching the numbers.

Take out the SRO's and you WON'T be able to watch the number of violent incidents rise because there will be NO ACCOUNTING of such acts.
Don't you see - the removal of SRO's will allow Grier to cover up what's happening in the schools.
Our only knowledge (outside of our children's observations) is when the police are called to investigate criminal acts. That will be no more.
Violence will increase, but the numbers will look good for Grier's resume.

I'm preparing comments as I speak...you can view past comments I've made regarding SROs on my website, click my name below. I don't suspect a motion would survive a vote but if it does, GCS had better watch the outcry.

Don't worry Quest the parents and the principals will be screaming to have the SRO's back when someone is seriously hurt and the lawsuits begin. They will be BEGGING for them to come back and hiring extras.
