26 projects make bond list

Just like American Idol, you get to vote on what you'd like to see in a proposed 2007 construction bond referendum. Sorry, you don't get to call or text in your votes. You have to show up in person at a public forum - which hasn't been set yet.

But you can look over the projects now and be ready to cast your vote later. (And just like in Idol, you may vote like crazy but Sanjaya still makes it to the next round and your favorite gets cut.)

Seriously, though, you'll get a chance to tell school board members what you think of their bond project list. Once we find out the dates for the public forums we'll post them.

In the meantime, here's the list the board approved Tuesday night (a copy will run in Thursday's paper, too):

(Project figures exclude inflation)
Jamestown Middle, $28.1 million: Additional funding for new school.
Ragsdale High, $28 million: Expansion and renovations, autism wing.
Special Education Center West, $7 million: Additional funding for new school.
Southeast High, $27.9 million: Classrooms, media center and gym.
Alamance Elementary, $17 million: Addition and renovations.

Southeast area elementary, $27.9 million: With autism wing.
Allen Middle, $7.6 million: Classrooms and auxiliary gym.
Southeast Middle, $9.6 million: Auxiliary gym, media center and cafeteria expansion.
Northern Greensboro elementary, $19.2 million: New school to help the Jesse Wharton and Brightwood areas.
Grimsley High, $9.8 million: Cafeteria addition, renovations to gym and stadium.
Airport area high, $66.3 million: New school, including site cost.
Northwest Middle, $3.3 million: Auxiliary gym.
Allen Jay Middle, $11.2 million: Renovation.
Dudley High, $2.6 million: Renovation of English building for academy.
Airport area middle, $40.9 million: With autism wing.

I heard a a lot of the "No Choice = No Bonds" magnets where pulled after the historic vote Tuesday night. Maybe we can all move on to educating our children in brick buildings.

debora said:

although not listed here, Craven at 13.8 million is to house only 100 kids. That is about $138,000 per seat. We could build each of those kids a house for that amount of money. That is one item that I think is ridiculous. I still havent decided if I think athletic fields should be on a bond issue.
I do think we have many needs in our fields etc, but seats are the most important thing in my mind.

Gatecity Keeper said:

Now the folks in Greensboro can freely distribute the following magnet:

Grier + Kearns + Childs + Hayes = 0 Bonds

No doubt the district is in desperate needs of new facilities. However until certain key changes are made the costly mismanagement of the taxpayers' funds will continue and only grow.

Joe R. Stafford said:

The spending on the athletic facilities at four locations and zeroing out all others is an outrage and will catch the attention of a lot of people. Going with stadium improvements that are only used at capacity a few times per year at the same time children don't have a seat to eat their lunch in a timely manner is sad. The BOE seems to have given up in core improvements and is now pandering to adults to get their votes and support. They believe they cannot sell education, they have to sell other stuff. I feel insulted by how low the BOE holds the general public.

I heard that a student was arrested at SWHS today and that the arrest involved a weapon, racial epithets, and the K9 unit. I hope I get details in tomorrow's paper.

What? said:

EH that rumor seems to be true. The talk at during 3rd period was two youths wearing white T shirts were arrested. Was this gang related?

What? said:

From the story we heard the charges should be:

Assault
Robbery
Kidnapping

if all we heard was true

felony charges are in order

these students are choosing to make the pipeline to prison shorter

they had a choice or right or wrong

sad but true said:

Mr. Stafford, I couldn't agree with you more.

Spending millions of dollars in bond money on bells and whistles like football stadiums is an outrage. All bond money should be spent on the basics - providing all students with a classroom seat, expanding cafeterias so that kids have a decent place to eat lunch, upgrading school libraries to help students learn, etc. As usual, the school board just doesn't get it.

From the above chart, $9 million in bond money is earmarked for athletic facilities. We've got thousands of kids in trailers and that's where the board wants to spend our money???

The Real Truth said:

I say no to the bonds as long as SW is on the list for $$. As long as there are empty seats at nearby Andrews. As a conservative I cannot possibly justify that extra expense to taxpayers just so SW can remain segregated.

I bet I can get the NAACP to denounce it as well. Wake up school Board! With Garth's leadership you have opened pandora's box!

The Real Truth

Noah said:

Conservative.....Riiight!

Feel free to denounce it. Make Deena, Buck and many taxpayers happy.

Walk through Southwest. Are you hallucinating??? It is not segregated.

Able said:

I bet YOU can get the NAACP of High Point to denounce it as well since your name is on their stationery along with Moses. That is a wonderful idea to save us so much money! Go for it! We have a new catalog of double wide trailers to choose from to add to SW. Eastern won't need theirs very long so that would be perfect timing.

SW parent said:

Are you so-called SW parents sore winners? The fight for choice is won. The dialogue with people like TRT is not helping and its just perpetuates the lie that SW is segregated. The more it is discussed the more the lie becomes true in the eyes of many. SW is the third most diverse school in the County and true SW parents know it and thats the end of that. Continuation of these discussions does not help any school in High Point. End it all and put all of you energy into the schools.
The war is over. Lets get back to Education.

The Real Truth said:

SW Parent,
You are the one perpretrating a lie. SW in no way compares to the diversity at other schools. It is not impacted by poverty. Its solidly middle class. As a racist your mind is always focussed on race and just because you see some black and asian faces in the hall you think your school is diverse. You also are forgetting that now that Garth's segregation plan passed there will far less diversity next year. You people are disgusting!

The Real Truth

Accountants Rule said:

SW Parent. The Real Truth is right. She has personally audited the tax returns of the minority student body at SW.

Thank god, we have a person who cares enough to do this.

No shoes no shirt no problem said:

SW Parent is right, let's get back to education.

In order to do that the clueless members of the School Board still need to go. More importantly than that no new bond money can be put in their hands. That would be Kearns, Childs, Hayes and an administrative staff that has these people baffled.

The Troops Have Spoken said:

SW Parent

The war is NEVER over and never will be again. The true enemy is "complacency" and we as parents will never, ever let this true enemy take control.
We shall always be on watch.

We will work for education of all students. There are many battles to still be won. We must all work to restore order, discipline and respect in our schools. Until then, others who want to learn will continue to be cheated out of the educations they work so hard to achieve. We will continue to lose the good teachers we love to other school systems.

As for trying to reason with TRT you win that point. She doesn't know the facts.

SW Parent said:

Troops,

That was my point.

mikeg said:

wonder what the total would be if we took out all the additional athletics facilities and focused on education, classrooms and the necessities?

guess the vote will be no

The Real Truth said:

SW Parent, And Grier Haters,

Don't kid yourselves! You people are education advocates. You've never done anything for educating anyones children but your own and other white children. You could care less about children of color. In fact you have stated in many posts that Children of color have hurt your precous school and all you want to do is send them away. Let someone else deal with it. Now that Sw has returned to its segregated status you won't have any support. The North High Point Racists are happy and they will disengage.

The Troops Have spoken,

How do you expect children to respect school authority when you SW parents have hung signs denounncing the Superintendent and the BOE? You people don't practice what you preach! You are disgusting! You behave like spoiled brats and then expect students to behave! You have set a terrible example for children. You should be ashamed!

The Real Truth

So Ashamed said:

We are so ashamed just like the people who Dot madepromises to.

Moses said:

Free at last! Free at last! Thank God we are free at last! Free to make our own choices! No more wondering around for endless ours on school buses. No more sitting at school all day when we are sick.

The Real Truth said:

Moses,

If you SW parents cared about children you would have created a fund for cab rides for sick children and parent conferences. That is what schools with impoverished students do. Very few impoverished children live within walking distance to any of our high schools. Especially if they are sick. The one good thing about Garth's proposal is that those poor kids will be better off at Andrews or Cental and away from you SW people who only care about your white middle class children. Instead of a taxi fund you entitled racists buy LaCrosse sticks. Again there is ignorance and racism in every thing you speak. Besides no one in High Point road the bus for hours. That is a lie.

The Real Truth

Ricky said:

The length of the bus rides came straight from the GCS website.

Kay said:

There is a fund at SW developed by the PTA for cab rides.

Red Bird said:

You got me TRT. I have purchased Lacrosse Sticks but didn't even know there was a cab fund.

Just the Facts said:

Tell that to the Parkview parents TRT. Many of these students didn't get to school until 10:00 the first week. Check the GCS website. The bus times are posted.

The Real Truth said:

Kay,

If there is a cab fund then why are sick students not going home? Could it be that transportation really isn't an issue its simply stupidity of a SW poster? Or do you just use the fund for transportation to LaCrosse games?

Just The Facts,

Give me a break, there are always problems with bus routes the first week of school. Don't even try to suggest that they continue all day. And there is nobody on busses for hours a day. Growing up I lived 4 miles from my school but the bus didn't arrive until 30 minutes after school was dismissed because it picked up at our school after it finished another route. Then it took us about 45 minutes to get home because of all the stops. Total time averaged 1hr 15 minutes in the afternoon and 45 minutes in the morning. I guess that was 2 hrs... (morning and afternoon combined) so what... it wasn't a big deal.... my parents didn't want to hang the BOE and superintendent because of it.... my grades didn't suffer.... it just didn't matter ... grow up spoiled little brats!

The Real Truth

Kay said:

I am not in charge of the distribution of funds at SW, but I am sure if you are interested in how the dollars are spent, you can call the school office and someone will assist you.

Hope you have a blessed day!

debora said:

can you legally put a child in a cab without a parent along with that child? At our school, only the people that are on the official'pick up list' are allowed to sign out a child. Would there be legal issues about putting a child alone in a cab?
Just a thought.

THE REAL FACTS said:

The many SWM volunteers have seen many incidences where children are sick and have no rides. These are true stories. Whatever facts you choose to ignore is your issue but it does not change the REAL FACTS.

The Alamo said:

TRT

Why are you calling the Park Place students "spoiled little brats". They did nothing to you. Maybe they just want to participate in sports too.

The time to accept things how they are is now. It's time to be out of denial and just move on with your new life in Texas.

Numbersgame said:

Those who continue to argue on this blog - please call a truce.

It's time to move on.

The vote is over.

Let's get on with advocating for better education for all of our students.

Kay said:

Deborah...that's a good question. I wondered too about the same issue. I know that cab funds were going to be used to help get parents to SW for parent/teacher conferences. I wasn't sure about how it pertains to students.

debora said:

Kay,
Sometimes legal junk gets in the way of common sense, but you can just imagine if you put a child in a cab, and there was a wreck, a kidnapping or worse; what liablity would have been involved. We have had parents that didn't have cars at NW and sometimes had to have a child lay down in the one sick room that we have for hours... and then have to get on a bus to ride home; it is quite sad.
We have to remember that things that are second nature to many of us (cars, computers, phones etc) aren't in every home. The system has to figure out how to reach these homes, teachers can't make you type something or count off points if you don't have a way to do that, we have to make open houses when it is most convenient for parents to get there; especially parents that are paid by the hour. Many can't afford to leave work for an hour or two for a meeting.. it could mean cutting back on groceries, or not paying the water bill.
I see many things that are done with parents and families as the afterthought not the forethought.

The Real Truth said:

Numbers Game,

It isn't over. The school board can change their mind again. They are going to get tremendous pressure to do so. This time it will come from real people of influence and not just a bunch of white supremecists. Garth has opened Pandora's box. Don't get too comfortable.

The Real Truth

Gatecity Keeper said:

Real Truth, I watch you from afar over in GSO. Now I did watch public speaking last week, which people of influence are you referencing?

Is it the crazy lady who claimed to be Moses?

Is it her husband with the dread-locks who threatens legal action?

Please tell me it's not the councilwoman from High Point.

As I see it now all of Guilford County is held to the same attendance standards. What is the problem? Are you saying my neighbors' kids in Sunset Hills should have to go to Dudley instead of Grimsley?

Tally Ho

The Red Sea said:

The same 3 "influential" people spoke at the meeting before last. I believe the mayor herself plus several HP council members wrote the school board. I would imagine these city representatives are for some peace in a divided city, not to mention the 650 names on a petition.
