Financing Eastern
If you haven't already, check out today's follow-up story about GCS pursuing a certificate of participation for Eastern Guilford High School. Some commissioners, including Billy Yow, Linda Shaw and Carolyn Coleman, said they want leftover money from the loan or state insurance funds to go toward paying off the debt, not paying for other school projects.
Next week's meeting should be interesting. The board plans to again discuss Garth Hebert's proposal to allow students to opt out of a redistricting plan in High Point. The board should also be finalizing its project list for possible November bond referendum to take to the public. Plus, the board will hear another update on the middle school rescheduling and the federal magnet grant application, which could include creating an aviation academy at Andrews High.
Another 'til midnight meeting perhaps?

I agree that the money should be used to pay off debt. No way should the BOE have extra money to spend without public input. No, don't misunderstand me, we need all the projects; but I don't trust the majority of the board.
I have still never heard anything that makes sense about the new Eastern costing $61M-- that is $20 Million more than Northern, and we already own the land, the road work is done, no need to drill a well or work on septic. No way things have gone up that much. There is too much of a cushion built in.

If you think this is bad, how about 100 million for the Airport High School? It costs more in Guilford County to build than in other places. Everyone knows this except the BOE.

I'm sorry did you actually say "any money left over?" From this School Board?
There are 6 examples on the current School Board of why we should all hope the School Board never has taxing authority.
Same reasons apply to no new bonds.

You will enjoy the Lone Star State when you move to Austin this summer. You will be the lone star of the newspaper school blog there just like you are here. I hear the tarangelas are real big. They love cats.
