Grier responds to class sizes

I wrote Tuesday about the school board's concern about class sizes in fourth and fifth grades. Superintendent Terry Grier sent out an e-mail today showing current class size averages.

I wonder how they came up with those figures. My child's school has the same number of kids in a particular grade level, so the average is quite easy to compute. Yet, the number shown for that school and that grade is 3 lower than reality.

Its well known that this school system cannot, repeat not come up with data that is not suspect.

Ordinary citizens can come up with with more trustworthy data.

I did not see the Academy at Lincoln elementary Very Strong Needs (VSN) program on the list. Did I miss it or was it just overlooked?

quest,

They use the same formula to calculate class size as the drop-out rate and the graduation rate. It's called WAG.

John,

I don't see Lincoln either. Part of the problem with finding Lincoln is one never knows where to look. Is it "Lincoln Academy" or "The Academy at Lincoln" or "Lincoln Middle School". Incredibly, on the Guilford County Schools' Job Vacancy Search, they have alphabetized "The Academy at Lincoln" under "THE"!!!!!! I could not find Lincoln, but then I found it. Right there with all the other "The's". Students are expected to master writing, but Guilford County Schools alphabetizes using articles?

Jwg,
It's possible Lincoln is not on the list because the 4th and 5th-graders are lumped together with middle schools at a middle school academy.

Morgan,

Any idea which "lump" they might be in?:-}

I am very suspect of the numbers as well. My daughters' classes are at the limit as set by the state... yet, they are shown below the limit (2-3 students) on this list. And we have new enrollments every day. Very interesting indeed.

I think that PE or another course is considered core, so they add that into the mix, even though that brings down the average. It could be another course; so just because there are 30 in the class, the average lowers due to the additional position added in. I could be wrong, but somewhere in my dark recesses of the brain that rings a bell.
