Are laptops in classrooms overhyped?

Yes. The BOE with 11 laptops has to have a technician on stand-by to assist them at every meeting. Computers have not been helpful in the lower grades. It has cost a lot and we have nothing to show for it.

Joe,
Why do you say computers have not been helpful in the lower grades?
This is a technical world and is here to stay.
First young children learn how to properly "type" or keyboard. They also learn how to navigate a mouse and learn very basics of the computer. There are some excellent math and reading programs. The children take all their AR tests for reading books on the computer. I know you are fond of more reading. Many schools give small prizes for the most AR points so this only encourages more reading.
I do agree that to just let kids draw colored lines and play is a waste of 45 minutes, but if they are learning math, reading and spelling, these are very useful.
Above all, many children don't have computers at home so they will need to have some basic computer skills to compete. They also need to pass computer skills tests at later grades.

Joe,
I will add one personal comment. We did not own a computer in our home, on purpose, until my daughter started high school. She learned to love reading, had to hand write papers, use proper grammar and learn how to spell properly. (This was a great advantage the one year in middle school when we had the ice storm and spent a week in a hotel. She handwrote a long paper for Latin. Other students freaked as they had no computer.) She also learned to value trips to the library. When she did have a computer at home, she appreciated it as a tool and not a toy. She holds the number one GPA in her senior class(so far). I feel learning the basics first without spell check and "games" helped her immensely.
I was happy though that she had learned much computer technology in school prior to us purchasing a computer. She's excited about Wake providing her with a lap top and a printer when she starts this fall.

To answer the original question:
No, we do not need lap tops in high school. They are an extravagance and can be a distraction to learning as the article mentioned. Some private schools require them, however.
And most colleges definitely require them.

Anybody help me?.
Just got a question, does anybody know where I can buy software called 'Mototools 6' from?
It's used for unlocking Motorola phones with the IMEI, and I really need it, as I don't have a cable to link my phone to my PC.
Please help! Thanks in advance for any help.
Goodbye to all

Is it true most colleges "require" them? I think Duke , et al, are still in the vanguard on that. Many prestigious law schools are now, for example, banning them from classrooms. Distracting. Easy to cheat. Same reasons high schools cite.

I believe that laptops in the classroom is a very good thing. Some people can take notes better and easier that way. For some people its harder to sit there and write notes so therefore they don't learn anything. So i believe that laptops are definetly a good thing in the classroom.

To add to what I said earlier laptops are a good thing. As for the students going to sites they shouldn't be on there are certain precautions that the school can and should take to avoid it. Like don't have access to wireless internet and have so many safety precautions that no one could ever possibly hack into or break through. If a school take the necessary precautions they want have to worry about people going to the sites that they should not be on.
