Future of the Chalkboard is in your hands
In a week, the number of people managing the Chalkboard will decrease from two to one. Jennifer Fernandez will take over covering courts for Jonathan Jones, who is leaving the paper. I will become the sole K-12 reporter and join a new team.
So that means I will be taking on more responsibility, including posting and managing the education blog. I have not settled on a managing philosophy yet, bu keep in mind that I won't have as much time to babysit commenters. Should I start wielding my "thou art banned" axe and be less forgiving with offending posters? Or should I trust that you all can keep the comments dynamic and respectful? We'll see...
By the way... have any of you taken advantage of the High Point schools transfer option (between SWMS and Andrews, SWMS and Welborn) or know anyone who has? If so, contact me at 373-7078 or mjosey@news-record.com

Jennifer,
Best of luck to you in your new endeavor.
Morgan,
Good luck to you as you take on full responsibility! I get tired just thinking about it!

quest,
Thanks. And thanks for being such a solid participant on the Chalkboard. I've really appreciated hearing - OK, technically reading - your thoughts over the years.
Wow, that sounds like I have ESP. :) But you get what I mean. Thanks for participating in the conversation here.

Jennifer,
Best to you in your new adventure.
Morgan,
It sounds like you will have your hands full. Seems like the chalkboard has been pretty calm lately. I haven't seen as much name calling.
Good luck with your new responsbility.

Jennifer,
Good luck at the new post. I appreciate all you have done here.
Morgan,
Congratulations or condolences on the sole proprietorship, you get to pick!
Is there a middle ground e.g. moderating comments by IP address?

Jennifer - I join with the other posters who wish you well as you pursue other opportunities in journalism. Thanks for the effort you've put into reporting on Education these last several years.
Morgan - I, too, wish you well as you take on full responsibility of reporting this very important topic to your readers. Good luck!

Jennifer - I wish you well also. We appreciate your efforts the last few years.
Morgan - What we want most is investigative journalism. The problem is that it takes a lot of time. Tending to day to day reporting and at the same writing long investigative stores (like why Forsyth builds for less) is more than one person can handle.
If we wee you less on Chalkboard, we will assume you are working away on other important issues.

I have appreciated your attending the GCS committee meetings, which none of us has the time to attend. I would like to see investigative journalism as well, specifically on-
How is it that Forsyth can build cheaper?
What in the world do the Central Office Staff do?
Is the GCS elementary school curriculum to blame for the poor scores on test? Or is it the State of NC curriculum, that we are forced to follow? I have had discussions with some teachers, for example, that we and they have to be on constant watch against those who would resurrect "new math", a generational disaster that is the reason the Chinese and Indians are overtaking us (now called whole math, and other assorted names). As a parent, I know that GCS does not provide enough drill in math skills, spelling rules, or grammar rules in the elementary school, and as a result the kids have difficulty in middle and high schools when they are supposed to know all these things intuitively. If you'd like to hear more from me on this issue, please e-mail.
I know of a child at Central (nominally zoned to Andrews but in pre-IB at Central) who could have transferred back to SW, but chose not to. I also have spoken to a teacher at SW about kids she teaches who could have transferred back to Andrews, but chose not to. Sorry, I can't give you names, but I get the impression that this is now a non-story. Those who wanted to transfer did, and those who wanted to stay at their "new" school stayed.
