Transportation deadline looms

School just ended but next year already is starting.

The school system sent this e-mail today on the deadlines for transportation requests for next school year. The first deadline is Monday, July 9, for year-round magnet schools and the second is Thursday, July 12, for traditional schools.

Jennifer,

Thank you very much for posting this. Had I not read it here, I would not have known of the need to complete this form and the associated deadline.

Do you know how most families will learn of this information? Does the district plan to mail letters to all the students' families?

quest,

From Haley Miller, a district spokeswoman: "A Connect Ed message will be going out later this week for students enrolled in traditional schools. The message will remind parents and students of the deadline and let them know how to submit the form."

She also said a mailing went out last week to magnet students and information was given out during magnet fairs.

This email does not make it clear for the new schools. Reedy Fork, Northern High, EP Pearce and Northern Elementary. If those kids rode the bus last year, will they need to fill this out? Cah you check Jennifer?

debora,

Good question. I'll shoot Haley an e-mail but I probably won't get an answer until tomorrow.

Thank you for this information.

I wonder if anyone else is looking at the
number of gun related violent acts that is
going on in Greensboro and noticing the age of the
offenders. When students at Eastern stayed home
from school because of rumors of violence, they
were accused of overreacting. Yet, four kids have been shot and killed this year in Greensboro.
Our students live in these neighborhoods! They hear the shooting and they know the victems.

Neighborhood violence spills over into the schools.

What is Guilford County doing to protect our students this coming year? A strong stance against Gangs and Gang Related Activity is taking place at the state level. We need a strong stance at the community level and in our schools!

I should not be able to walk on the school grounds and be able to identify gang members on our campus by their chanting and clothing. This should be identified as gang activity and the students should be removed from the campus immediately.

The School Board had a initiative planned but since the full amount of the requested budget was not approved they will not be able to do it now. Is money the only way to solve discipline problems?

Anyone who wants to really understand what is happening with gang activities in the schools and neighborhoods, needs to read Ben Holder's report on his blog under the "Greensboro Gone Wild" strand. Ben Holder is in touch with and understands the depth of the issue.

Money is not the only way to solve discipline problems. Other school districts have programs that work and require little money, if any.

Also the schools will now be receiving several million in red light money. That could be put into building more alternative school settings for students.
