Update on Southeast High's new cafeteria

"Where is the progress on Southeast High School?", a parent asked me in so many words earlier this week. She had also asked this of school board members at a bond forum in April and was told that the district was working to expand Southeast's 45-year-old cafeteria.

I talked to district facilities consultant Joe Hill yesterday and he said that students can expect to enjoy their new cafeteria (which would double in size) in fall 2008. The district has completed design on it and construction should begin in the fall, with the tearing out of the wall joining the old and new sections occurring next summer after school gets out. Crews are relocating driveways and parking areas in front of the school this summer.

Hill said the project was delayed because of the need to extend a Greensboro water line to the school.

"We were in a situation where the state would not allow us to expand the school until we increased the capacity of the water system," he said.

The upshot? There will be plenty of water capacity for further expansion at the school if a proposed $440 million construction bond passes.

Your statement is confusing. You say the project will begin next fall, then you say if the bond passes.

Will the project still be a go if the bond does not pass in May?

Morgan,

Why is the Smith Academy strand closed for comments. Are the comments too close to home?

And to continue on Jeff Peeler's comment from that strand. You are 100% on target. If this is "Guilford County Schools", all schools must go to SMOD immediately. One of the reasons for SMOD was to identify gang members; another reason was to know who belongs on campus. Since Guilford County wants all our schools to be safe then all must go to SMOD immediately. The letters will go out in plenty of time for the sales tax rebate in August.

I noticed that Southern HS is going to SMOD according to their website.

Uniform policies,
I don't know what you meant by your statement, but the strand on Smith Academy was not closed; occasionally we experience glitches with the blog and we haven't yet figured out the reason other than to assume a programming bug.

As far as Southeast High is concerned, I am talking about two different projects. The cafeteria expansion is not tied to a future bond and was previously approved. The further expansion refers to the $32 million proposed for new classrooms, gym and media center at the school.

The Smith Academy strand was closed. Jennifer took care of it.
