Grier Watch 2008, final countdown

So today is the day we find out, for sure, whether Grier is going to San Diego or staying right here until his contract expires in two years.

I got a request today from a very on-the-ball parent asking me to break down Grier's $370K pay and benefits. So in case you wondered what a superintendent of his tenure costs, here goes, rounded up to the dollar:

2007-2008
base salary -- $226,933
local differential (formally travel) - $9,000
longevity -- $11,980
local annual leave -- $17,722
local insurance/benefit conversion -- $18,777
local retirement reimbursement -- $14,303
local service purchase -- $73,479

Grand total (with retirement, benefits, etc) -- $372,193

bring me a beer, i will toast to his goodbye!

and i just have to remember when i first heard he was interviewing there... i was reading a blog on here and there was a man who had moved here from san diego a while back, and HATED the school system here and grier, and literally threatened to quit the job he moved here for, if they didn't relocate him back. i think he said they moved back in december, (to get away from grier) and that over his dead body (or something like that) would grier ever get the job there. that he would tell everybody there about the real grier... and that he's see to it that he did not get the job offer.

well, i just have to say... NO TAKEBACKS!!!!!
ha ha ha ha ha ha.

Maybe now EVERY child in the county will have equal access to art and music.

maybe we can actually take charge of our class rooms again!

Maybe now EVERY child in the county will have equal access to high quality art and music education programs.

Anonymous said:

I had to add the words "high quality" to my art/music post because some might say that every child already has access to art and music. When art and music are only offered 1 semester, that is NOT a high quality program. When elementary students see their art/music teachers only once every two-three weeks, that is NOT a high quality program. When middle school art/chorus/band/orchestra classes are offered on an A/B day schedule, this does not qualify as "high quality" programing. No matter what "official reason" has been given for these cuts, they need to be reversed.

Can somebody please post the address of the party in Summerfield? I've heard there's a big one going on.

Now

Get ready for the I was not a Nazi Polka

We were only following orders
Administrators will come out of the woodwork explaining how Grier controlled everything they said, did and released.
We had to suppress discipline numbers.
I was directed to only release these certain statistics
Required to move students on ready or not
We gammed the numbers
You cannot expel.

Etc.

Everyone should bookmark this thread for future reference.

Our next superintendent will be equally disparaged after a couple of years on the job; perhaps not by the same group of parents, but I doubt you will be able to tell the difference.

That might be true Hog but we will hopefully have a new school board which was the true mission. Sorry your invitation got lost in the mail to the big party last night.

Whiney?

I don't whine... nor do I wannabe.

So what are the teachers in store for in San Diego, CA with Dr. Grier? How did his practices affect your day to day teaching? We survived Bersin...will be survive Dr. Grier?

Curious Teacher said:

So what exactly are the teachers in store for in San Diego? As a teacher I want to know how the new super will impact my day to day teaching? What kind of change did he implement at the elementary level? Did he take teacher input? Thanks

The HPE reported this today:

"They approved a four-year contract through 2012 that will give him a base annual salary of $269,000. He’ll also have the potential to earn performance bonuses of up to $10,500 each year if he meets board goals. Grier earned roughly $300,000 annually in salary and benefits during his time with Guilford County Schools, about half the size of the San Diego district."

What's wrong with this picture? Sure, he's getting a decent bump in salary from $226,993 to $269,000, but a performance bonus of $10,500 each year hardly raises his total comp to the same level he enjoyed here..$372,000 as reported by Amanda. It looks as though the HPE reporter did not include the $73,000 for local service purchase, whatever that is.

In any event, at best, it appears that Grier is taking on a job in a district with twice the student population, and likely twice the problems, for the same comp. This doesn't sound like the old Terry Grier that we know, as we know that money is his prime driver in life.. So, what's missing here?
