More on Sandra Alexander for at-large

I wasn't able to interview at-large candidate Sandra Alexander in time for the Saturday compilation we had on filings for the Guilford County Board of Education, Board of Commissioners and other public offices. However, Alexander faxed me some information about her this week and I wanted to share it.

Alexander, a former English professor at N.C. A&T State University is the owner/CEO of Greensboro Scenic Tours, a local sightseeing tour and transportation business. Her platform includes: fiscal responsibility, parental involvement, innovative educational programming and performance accountability/teacher support. Sound familiar?

Alexander formerly served on the board of directors for the Greensboro YWCA and North Carolina Writer's Network. She is a current participant in Impact Greensboro and member of the board of trustees for Triad Stage.

I am really excited that Sandra Alexander is running for an at-large seat. She had a great impact on me when I was a student at A&T and has made her mark in the field of education for many years. She would be a balanced and well informed member of the GCS school board. I especially like her call for both accountability and teacher support- you cannot have one without the other.

When you say "sound familiar" - what does that mean? I thought her platform of "innovative educational programming" sounded like Terry Grier himself.

David,

I should remind you that Walter Childs also has a PhD in education and he was not an effective school board member. Diplomas and other awards does not necessarily equate to a good school board member.

I'm looking for another Darlene Garrett - someone who looks out for the students, their parents, and the teachers.

I apologize for my reasoning.
You appear correct.

I just read that Ms Alexander believes we need to hire another phoney like Grier.

So much for education.

David,

It appears that Dr. Alexander is made from the same mold as Grier and Childs.

Give me another Darlene Garrett!!

Voices of Reason Needed said:

It seems as if you guys are jumping to a lot of conclusions without proof. How are Childs and Grier in the same mold? What exactly does that mean? How can you question someone else's judgement when you don't seem to have good judgement yourself? A substantive discussion needs to take place surrounding what's best for our children in Guilford County so that we as voters can make informed decisions about who should represent us on the board. Posturing and sarcasm is self serving, destructive, and hateful.

Childs + Grier = Useless.

It works for me. Quite revealing really and gosh we have got a lot of problems in our schools havent we!!!

I downloaded the file. Its an adobe reader file.

Erik Huey states that he has received Darlene Garrett's and Paul Daniels' "mutual support."

David Colin said:

Don't know anything about Childs.

Lots of experience with Grier.

He is a Phony. Period.

Ive been misinformed by him and he games the numbers.

Cathy said:

Speaking of "a lot of problems in our schools"... how in the world was Kevin Miller hired by GCS after being run out of Hartford for inappropriate behavior with a 15-yr-old female student?!

It is bad enough that lax discipline is allowing students to be dangerous to others. Now we have to worry about inadequate screening of employees allowing staff to be a potential threat to our children!

I hope and pray Miller's resignation came before his inappropriate behavior affected one of our students. Grimsley students have suffered enough.

"How can you question someone else's judgment when you don't seem to have good judgment yourself?"

I resent that.

I think I showed reasonable judgment.

I read the ladies qualifications and formulated an opinion, When I got further information I changed my opinion. That seems reasonable to me.

Also I sign my name.

That should be worth something.

Hell you could be Terry Grier. Who knows

I the Rhino this lady says she has been a long time admirer of Dot Kearns and she thinks that we need another Grier.

She has to be one of the worst candidates there is in my book.

Kearns?

I thats true then she wont get in!

Over my dead body!

Anonymous said:

Kearns supporting her will be a big handicap.

Dist. 4 said:

I am really having issues with a quote from Mrs. Alexander in the paper. She stated, (I'm paraphrasing) that she felt she knew exactly what Dist. 4 needed and she would make that a priority. I would like to know just exactly what she is talking about? Is she thinking she's going to just come to my district, (as an At-large rep) and start making changes? Dist. 4 has had ENOUGH changes! Change is the LAST think we need! We need to be LEFT ALONE and if she's thinking of busing us again she can just FORGET it!

I seriously worry that she has been talking to Dot Kearns. Dot was in favor of busing and still seethes that she did not get to finalize her little plan. I want to know which candidate it is that Dot Kearns is endorsing so I can run as fast as possible the opposite direction!

I'm anxiously awaiting someone to please clarify Mrs. Alexander's words. It seems she had a lot to say to the Rhino that day and now she's disappeared. I have tried to call her and have had no success. Also, why is her name wrong on the board of elections site? They have it as Alexandra.

To summerize what I tried to say above: Dist. 4 does NOT need another Dot Kearns mentality!

Anonymous said:

District 4 is Alan Duncan's district. I'm confused about Alexander's remarks and those of the poster above.

What changes has District 4 had?

debora said:

If you are running at large, you should think what is best of ALL students, not one district over another. For one, I am tired of having an at-large that only concentrates on one area. I want someone that looks at all the educational issues and tries to do the best for all concerned.

Yes, another Nancy Routh would be good. I don't think that she has ever favored one segment of the county over another. She is a true at-large representative and well represents all the children.
