Working conditions survey ends April 21

Teachers at Guilford County Schools have until Monday to complete the state working conditions survey.

A couple incentives: All schools with 100 percent participation are eligible for a weekly drawing of a $1,000 grant to improve teaching conditions. Educators also are eligible for a weekly cash prize of $1,000 and a $2,500 plasma television grand prize from AT&T.

Survey results will be released on June 1.

So teachers are encouraged to spend time doing something other than teaching in the hope they might get money to improve teaching... Sad and ironic.

I don't think teachers are required to complete the surveys during the school day.

I attended the Guilford County PTA sponsored discussion/forum at Northern High School Tuesday night. Many have asked who I would endorse and I have wanted to say” does it matter”, but having thought hard on the subject and having found plus and minus for several candidates I have to say first and foremost that only one candidate appeared to really know what was going on. Full of fire and enthusiasm Eric pushed onward. He may be an underdog and even a tad bit rough around the edges, but his energy and continued dedication have me convinced. That does not mean Hawkes or Alexander do not offer strength as well and one question asked was how many School Board Meetings have you attended in the last year? As they are televised I did not believe the question was placed properly, but the answers offered a glimpse into the real character of each one. Go Eric!

As for Darlene, her never ending, tireless sacrifice for our kids as well as her knowledge of the real issues we deal with in education make her my favorite though I cannot vote for her as she lives in and represents another district. She truly is a non-partisan in her vote, representing not herself but our kids and teachers and her constituents in a remarkable way. As near as I can tell she spends 30 to 40 hours a week serving the public.

Garth,
thank you for coming to the forum on Tuesday. Just for the record it was NGHS PTSA that sponosored the forum, not GCCPTA. We were glad to have those that attended and hope they spread the word of their opinions and impressions.

But the teachers may have a self-imposed rule that says they shouldn't have to work after they get home. Oh dear that just made me laugh out loud. Imagine a teacher not thinking about school or doing anything school related until he/she arrived at school the next morning. We can all dream I guess.
