Check out school board candidate questionnaires

Over the past two weeks, the editorial department has been interviewing school board candidates (at-large and District 3) for its endorsement process. Check out the questionnaires for Sandra Alexander, Michael McKinney, Darlene Garrett and Mike Stone. I will upload audio files in the coming weeks.

First of all, let me say that I wish Mike Stone was running for At-Large instead of against Darlene Garrett. Darlene is probably the very best current board member and I think MIke Stone could be a great asset to the board as well. What a shame.

Unfortunately neither of the 2 at-large candidates is a good choice.

Re: Sandra Alexander: She says "I believe I will bring to the school board the expertise and experience of a career educator." That's exactly what we DON'T need - remember Terry Grier was a career educator. That's NOT what this board needs.

Then Alexander states "I consider the fact that cultural arts and physical education have been eliminated from the curriculum of the GCS public schools an embarrassment." ?????? What????? The State mandates PE - what is she talking about????

Alexander: "There is little that the system can do to cut down on fuel costs given the current crisis.
However, the system should make efforts to transport middle school and high school
students together on the same buses to schools in close proximity."???????

Perhaps Alexander should go visit some schools in the district - middle and high school students have been riding the same bus together for years.

Alexander isn't qualified - she's of retirement age. Board members should have to have a child in the system in order to serve. She's simply out of touch.

And, as for McKinney: "The need to work for increased funding, clarification and transparency of all monetary concerns of the system including reductions in spending where feasible. "

Does anybody have any idea what that means??? It seems to be a contradiction of itself.

McKinney: "Avoid unnecessary busing where possible. Reduce bussing (sic) where possible." Specifically what does that mean? Morgan - can you get him to give examples??? I'm really curious to know what he means here.

McKinney: "What things should the system do to contain costs?
The initial step is to make a thorough and accurate operational assessment to review the current situation. Then consider necessary practices to ensure efficiency. Consider any/all feasible reductions or minimizations."????

What the heck does that mean?

Morgan - does McKinney have a college degree? He seems to talk in doublespeak. I don't understand his comments.

Both seem a little confused but on the whole I am for Mckinney. At least he has a business background.

We have too many Alexander types on the board already.
