Consolidated Admin Office?
So if you read the story today my question will come as no surprise. Should the school board, Greensboro City Council and county commissioners all get behind the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro’s proposal to consolidate the school system’s administrative offices and move to South Elm Street?
Who should pay for such a thing and do you think the parents and taxpayers would benefit?

Who should pay for it? The answer to that is no different than how you or I would pay for it. Sell what you have first in order to raise the funds to pay for it.
The moving should be easy. There are enough pencil pushers in the main office that if they made a human chain it would no doubt stretch from Point A to Point B and simply starting handing boxes from one person to the next.
I'm at a loss for how parents and taxpayers would benefit. Maybe you would like to tell me.
I'm also a little concerned about that artist rendering of what the building would look like. After listening to Deena Hayes run her mouth again about minority contractors can we please find out if this picture was drawn by a starving artist or a minority artist?

Are you kidding me??
Until every student in Guilford County can sit in a class in a brick and morter building, there should be NO new administrative offices. Let the high paid administrators sit in trailers like most of the students in Guilford County do.
Oh, I almost forgot, since the board likes to rearrange bond money, maybe they can take the funds away from Jamestown Middle and Ragsdale and use that to building this next Taj Mahal.

Well Buckmtn. and Anonymous, you said it so eloquently, I have nothing more to add!
Ditto what they said!

I've spoken with the folks at the Community Foundation and Gate City Company who developed this plan and they claim it can be pulled off without one penny coming out of the school board's budget.
If that's true and it creates one office where all these folks will be located downtown, should officials and taxpayers back it?

If $60Million can be found to allow all the overpaid administrators to sit in the same building, why can't this group fund some classrooms and get rid of trailers?

And another thing - it just doesn't send good message to the taxpayers. Regardless of who pays for it, people will think our tax dollars funded it and you better believe we'll never pass another school bond.
It will look like just more wasted money from that group on Eugene Street.

I agree...
STUDENTS COME FIRST!!
Move the administration into trailers so we can have the administrative buildings for the Twilight Academys!
Matter of fact ... why doesn't admin
move into the former Gibsonville Elementary....
instead of give the property away...we should hold on to property that is adjacent to schools...
There is plenty of room there!
How can they come up with $60 million dollars?
Where were these people when we were trying to figure out how we were going to rebuild Eastern Guilford?
They could have rebuilt Eastern with this money!
I guess this is why this was not mentioned before we voted on the bond. If it would have been my guess is Eastern would have been pulled off of the list.
This plan and drawing has been in the making for awhile...way before the bond vote....
Who knew about it?

Well If this thing moves forward, I personally think it should be built somewhere else. As a downtown resident, I expectected something a little more ambitious for the South Elm/Lee Street site. The site has so much more potential then just being used for a school administration building. I would have liked the site to include entertainment venues, movie theater and maybe a grocery store. Once again our leaders dont think big and they settle for mediocre visions.

If they have a buyer for the downtown administrative offices that will sign on
the dotted line now...I say sell and put
them in GIbsonville Elementary until it is built.....
If they do not have a buyer in this market...
it is too big a risk...

This is Greensboro.
They shop the property to everyone in the private sector with no takers. Then they look at local Government to bail them out. The BOE has night meetings, many women don't feel safe at Fisher Park, you can imagine how they would feel in the Elm/Lee area - one block from the homeless shelter. This idea trades one problem for a much bigger problem. One question, what does this site do for High Point. Also, the idea that everyone has to be under one roof is flawed. We have continual communication available now. The BOE should do what is best for education in Guilford County not what is best for the City of Greensboro.

Why would they do some thing that they have never done before?

Here we go again,,,
Back in Griers' day,,, Action Greensboro and the "old money" used to dictate alot of decisions that were made in the GCS system.
Most of the decisions made were to the benefit of Greensboro, and usually left High Point and its schools eating leftovers.
Why in the world should GCS get involved in a private venture that has no other goal than to pad the pockets of those same "Power Brokers" that had Grier on the end of the puppet strings all those years.
If any area of the county needs help with revitalization,, it would be Downtown High Point ,,,,
Mo,,,,please show us that you have a back bone and steer clear of the "Profiteers" who have no real interest in Education.

General,
We are polishing off additional stars!
Guess Action Greensboro will now be pulling Mo's strings.

It's worse then this folks. They also want taxing authority. Give these people taxing authority, and they don't have to do under the table deals. They can just levy taxes to build whatsoever they choose. Remember how responsive they are to taxpayers and voters.
But, leave it up to this group to get some fancy new c.o. digs when kids are begin bussed from one neighborhood t another and sitting in trailers for class rooms. Only in GCS.

Vote for Mike Stone. He opposes taxing authority for the school board. If you don't like boondoggles such as this, then we need to get people on the board who oppose taxing autority. Once they get it, there'll be no stopping the madness.

I heard Mr Stone talk. He seems a little weak to me.

Anon,
We are not electing best talker here, we are electing a doer; someone who can actually try to educate children.

Exactly.

Is it just a basic requirement of being a school board member that you MUST lose your mind and spend money and time on totally useless things? They should visit the pretty, huge, basically empty white elephant board building in Raleigh to see that space for bureaucrats is not a good use of anybody's public money. Unless one of them wants to donate all of the money privately for this project, they need to drop it. God, they must be bored...they should visit classrooms and volunteer their time in schools. Then they wouldn't worry about having a fancy facility for themselves. Shame shame shame on them.
And who in his or her right mind believes that "no tax money" will be used for this project?

1. Not a creation of School Board
2. You guys have it right as far as absurd.
3. NO one has seen this proposal in any realistic form, NO ONE! It is hopefully being relegated to the sci-fi fantasy section of Barnes and Noble.
4. What I have seen and heard is so incomprehensible as to be fantasy and not even Sci-fi.
5. LET ME AT THEM!
