Becoats on the way out?
Looks like GCS Chief of Staff Eric Becoats has found that superintendent job he was looking for, or at least a new position.
Listed in this month’s new hirings and resignations is the hiring of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools spokesperson Nora Carr as our systems new chief of staff.
No word yet as to where Becoats is going but I’ll find out this morning during the Eastern High School walkthrough and post it here asap. Becoats was past over for the St. Louis school system's top job a few months ago and is on the record as saying heading up a major metropolitian school system is a career goal.
Update 9:40 a.m. - GCS spokesman Lekan Oguntoyinbo said Becoats' new position is within GCS. More as this unfolds.
Update 1:17 p.m. - Carr declined to comment – via a GCS spokesperson - pending the board approval of her hiring. The item is on the board's consent agenda for their meeting Thursday night.

I wonder if his new position was part of the budget that was passed or is new funding needed for this?
Also, when did the board vote on a new position for him?

if he is already employed would they have to vote on that? Isn't chief of staff like the top position, so maybe this is a lower position... just a thought

Beatcoats leaving GCS is very good news.

Guilford county is becoming a little Charlotte-Meck system. Lately all of our new hires have come from there. It would be fine if Charlotte-Meck had a great system that we'd want to model, but they don't. So why in the world do we want their left-overs? Someone is not doing their homework.

If schools can't get money for supplies, how can the superintendent get a new administrative position?

Carr, Becoats
Mo has to be kidding.
The kids can’t read write and do arithmetic and we get a new marketing advertising person as Chief of Staff and move a guying looking for another job to Human Resources
Oh, and we actually had two unreported rapes last year.
There are now three top level people who have never taught in a class room
Ask Mo if he ever knew a law firm run by a person who was
not a lawyer?
I guess she can spin the news from bad to good. More of the same.
She can blame the rapes on teen age hormone aggression.
The cynic's dictionary definition of marketing and public relations:
“Organized Lying”
After months of "Mo Wants to Know" the outcome is better public relations/marketing.
More business relations. Perhaps Wachovia/ Merrill Lynch/American Express. US Icons of progress,
Did anyone actually suggest a Public Relations position? Seriously.
Becoats wants another job so Human Resources will be a good fit for him.
He can Network and make job connections

I didn't get to see the channel 2 news report about crime... is that when you heard about 2 unreported rapes? Any link so that I can read about the report would be appreciated.

Debora,
You can view the interview and report on
2Wants to KNOW at www.digtriad.com.
One of the unreportted rapes was at Eastern, but has never been confirmed or denied by school staff. No one knows if it was reportted during school hours or just on school property and whether there was an arrest of if the charges were dropped. However, Brian could look into this.
Eric,
A mininum requirement for the Chief of Staff position is that the candidate has been a Principal.
I have not seen this in her resume...have you.
You can view this at the www.gcsnc.com/Senior Directory/Eric Beacoats/ click on Chief of Staff which will give you the Minimum Training and Experience requirements.
Also...will we be creating another job for her husband which was demoted in May from his job as Principal at Ransom in Charlotte for low scores and performance at his school. This was in the Charlotte Observer...search Google Kevin Carr...
In my company, a position has to be approved , posted publicly, and all candidates for the position must be interviewed so that it is fair to everyone.
Why are Guilford County positions not handled in this manner? Are positions just created at the Superintendents discretion and he gets to create one for individuals? I don't think our tax dollars should be handled in this manner and that the school board should be more responsible in these manners.

Tax paying parent You are correct.
However Becoats was never a Principal.
Thus we have set a precedent and lawyers understand precedent.
The system hires friends and associates.
Look at the jobs duties. Public relations and marketing not mentioned.
The system ignores its own procedures
This shows initiative.
We could well become the Enron of education.
All presentation and Hollywood set.
Hell we have a statistician who has no problen with a 2.99% drop out rate and a 70% graduation rate
We simple folk just don't understand statistics and data
The Grier method. Everything based om long term futures.

150K. Where do they think they are? 2007?
This is 2008 and the country is almost bankrupt because of the same bad practices.
Mo's a going in the wrong direction for me.
When we should be reducing it at least could be one in and one out.

Its plain disgusting!
Its Grier all over again!

The other posters above said it all. Change out the players on the SB, change out the Super and we still have the same old irresponsible fiscal behaviour.

Mo says “I am delighted that Nora has chosen to join us at GCS,” said Green. “She is a masterful communications strategist. She is highly skilled in the art of moving organizations forward. Her presence here is vital to helping the district achieve its goal of becoming the nation’s leading public school system".
Since when does a communication strategist help you become a leading public school system?
I just dont get it.

Mo's org chart!

Well think about it.
Who would need a PR communications expert.
A system that screws everything up.
Someone has to do damage control and spin.
Mo is on to something.
Posted on November 16, 2008 5:20 PM
Your probably right. After his listening tour he probably came to the conclusion that the only way he is going to get out and into another cushy job after this is to start the PR spinning.
I mean, why hire anyone that's important for education?
Posted on November 16, 2008 7:10 PM
Hiring folks who don't have minimum qualifications is nothing new here, folks. Jane Fleming (Advanced Learning) and Lise Timmons (same dept) neither had their certification in Academically Gifted when they came and only got it under duress. Jane didn't have one day of experience in Gifted Education and after almost two years, she still doesn't have any experience because she doesn't seem a bit smarter now than she was when she came. And we get these folks for a mere 96K (JF) and 86K (LT). Hey, GCS loves to spend big bucks hiring the friends of existing upper cabinet folk and the spouses of new hires. And the ones who get stuck? The students. Don't know what will happen when parents learn that the AL dept is using the scores from May '08 EOG rather than those from '09 for the VSN program at Lincoln for next year. If your child doesn't get in now, but has the scores, etc. from the May EOG...too bad for you!!!
