Green defends chief of staff hire

Mo Green weighs in on his hiring of Charlotte schools senior PR person Nora Carr as his new Chief of Staff two weeks ago. Many in the community have questioned this decision in light of the $5 million Guilford County Schools must cut from its budget to make up for a state budget shortfall and lower than anticipated enrollment in our schools.

Green addresses those concerns on his blog today.

“Some may question the value of adding Ms. Carr at this time. Simply put, I do not. Having worked with her for a number of years, I know how valuable she is as a school district administrator. As a result, I believe that Ms. Carr will be an asset to this school district.”

Among the assets he list is her ability to help roll out his strategic plan for the school system.

He also says he’ll cut back on the number of senior leadership positions by the next fiscal year. That decision, he says, is based on his survey of the system and his plan for it rather than the economics of the time.

Take time to read Green’s blog and come back here to let your voice be heard. You can’t reply to Green’s blog.

I wonder what are her real, concrete acheivments in Charlotte? If Mo knows then so should we.
I mean we should see evidence of a super Charlotte Meck school system.

I dont see it.

I look forward to Mr. Green's analysis as well.

where is this magical strategic plan? can we see a copy of this somewhere on the GCS website?

it sounds like Mo is just bringing some of his friends from Charlotte-Mech here. He has learned the "good ol boy" network quite well.

what senior positions are being deleted? I suppose it's Grier's hires that are still left?

Notice that Sonya C left the same time Grier headed out west.

Brian,
As I walked through Four Seasons mall this weekend, I was afraid for the first time as my son pointed out the possible difference between a gang member and someone that is just wearing a certain color.

Young men walked by with red hats, red shirts,
black shoes with red stripes and a red bandana hanging out was a certain statement of gang membership.

What was disturbing was that two of these young men appeared to be walking with their mother?

My son said she is probably a member herself and is encouraging it or she has no clue.

Now that the court system is taking a stronger stance by defining a "gang" and "gang participation" what is Guilford County Schools going to do to help suppress and prevent gang membership. Is anyone working on a plan from the county level to join our resources?

Amos might be afraid that we are picking on minorities...but when the gangs are minority based...do we have a choice... I understand that every minority is not a gang member...but the way these young men are dressing is making it difficult to tell the difference.

The leaders in this community need to step up to the plate and take the lead on this.

OK, So we have to arrest all those kids that wear the same clothing.

We had better start arresting all those kids with Abercrombie and Holister shirts. They are a rough looking bunch!

Anon said:

keep joking about gangs in our schools.....they are here for sure and gaining a stronger presence every day.

Anonymous said:

It was not a joke. I found your comments offensive.

Tax Payer said:

Anonymous,

What are you offended by?

It is a fact that gang members represent by wearing "colors" in a certain way....I was curious as to how you tell the difference. I kid in a red coat does not mean he is a blood...but a kid in a hat with red on it, a red coat, pants with red in it, and red on the shoes....might be representing.

Some of the young men that we passed just had
on a red top...that does not necessarily mean anything

...but your SRO officers at school will tell you the number of times that youngsters are beat up on our campuses because an innocent student comes to school with the wrong color shirt on
...because the gang members are confused and think he is representing.....

If a gang member misidentifies another by his clothing..how is a teacher to know, a parent, an officer, a counselor???

You can be assured that there is no mistake when the red or blue bandana is hanging out of the back pocket...sometimes this is stuffed down so it is not visible...when it is ... he is telling you something.

Also...only black males are ALLOWED to be a BLOOD...at our school.....this is a fact....
BLOODS wear RED....and all BLOODS are BLACK..

I never said all blacks in red were BLOODS....
just wonder how you can tell the difference....

So you know?

Parent said:

Anonymous,

Do you have a clue why RED is one of the completely excluded colors at our SMOD schools?

Ever wonder why SMOD is only implemented at predominantly minority schools?

Do you know what SMOD is?
....why elimination of gang colors
....why elimnation of fighting as a result
....teachers do not feel as afraid
Standard Mode of Dress.....

Smith......yes
HP Central .yes

Dear Taxpayer,

You are 100% correct. There are rap songs thathat have lyrics referring to "wear it on the left" or "the right" depending on the color and which gang you are in. I work have worked in the schools for a long time. The bandana hanging out of the pocket is a definite song of a gang member or an I-wanna-be-a-gangster too

Ask the teens (whites inclued here) who love rap music. You will get an earful about what certain lyrics mean.

Not to change the subject, but I watched the beginning of the BOE meeting on TV. It looked like the principal at Smith High is doing some postive things at that school, that is, unless the HH award is just for PR sake. I sure hope not.

This is some positive news for some of our at-risk youth. On a not so positive note, Deena was not even there to see the principal from a school she supposedly represents receive his award.

Sad but true.

If you are a member of the Bloods and are "representing" in the Blood color (red) and someone offends your color....you are required to defend it...If another Blood observes you not defending it...you will get jumped....
This has happened at our school many times...

I have never heard of someone being jumped for not defending Hollister/Abercrombie....but I want say it will never happen...as gangs spread and take on different symbols...it could happen....

I just don't know of one yet that uses these logos....

What about the Rosanna Bandana Banana Republic Gang? Now they are scary. Yellow can drive people crazy!

Tax Payer said:

Going Ape:

Yellow in and of itself may mean nothing.but
the yellow/black/purple beads belong to
the Latin Kings...

You really need to educate yourself.....

Scary
... is a CRYPT(royal blue/blue bandana) that lives off of Huffine Mill Rd that kills a non-gang member acquintance over $25.00.....

..is a "17year old Guilford County student with college prospects....."Blood" selling drugs in the bathroom at Southern Guilford and finding an automatic machine gun, .38, cocaine, and $3000.00 in the trunk of the star quarterback's car.....

..is the "Blood Gang" of 8 men ages 18 - 22 that jumped two young men .. beat, robbed, and cut one of them with a razor almost completely removing his ear for $50.00 at 4:00 in the afternoon after school in Kensington Estates off of Mt Hope Church Road...

Keep burying your head in the sand.....and when you are jumped at the local pantry by someone wearing a red bandana over his face....

I hope you remember your comments as he hits you in the face with a steel bar, robs your, and takes your car....

Just hope YOUR children are not in it.

Anon said:

Going Ape,

I hope the reason that you are so offended by these comments are not because you see these signs in your own children...Many parents deny the initial signs of gang membership and step up in the children's defense...This is what the parents at Kensington Estates did for over a year...Now they are in jail.....

If you know anyone that always wears the same color somewhere on their clothes...especially the shoes... they may tell you that it is because they like it... but chances are that they are pulling your leg....Here is a good test....how does the group of friends that he hangs out with dress...same colors? if not...then he may be ok....

Colors ....are just one of many SIGNS...no one ever said ALWAYS or NEVER...

This was the initial discussion...how do you tell if red is red or red is BLOOD....but when I walk through Four Seasons and four young men pass me with red dew rags, jackets with red, pants with red sticking, black shoes with red laces, and red bandanas hanging out of the back pocket....
I leave the area......

Do they have a flag...a bandana?

I hope this is not why you are upset, if it is you have a battle ahead of you.

All of the upscale stores have left FS for Friendly. The anchor stores remain as well as the youth oriented stores which are primarily sneaker retail stores.

GSO police are always over there and contend it's a major point for crime. Lot of theft and thuggery happening. My wife and I personally witnessed a drug sell in the parking lot. We seldom shop there anymore and when we do only during daylight hours.

Heard the Chicago owner of Four Seasons is teetering on insolvency.

Koury was smart to get out of FS.

Very nice this blog!

Lighten up Tax Payer and Anon. You need to educate yourselves to sarcasm when you see it.

It sure seems like Guilford County Schools takes these gangs as jokes because NOTHING IS BEING DONE!

The people in charge of leading our schools are the ones with their heads in the sand.

Great comments, Bubba and true. I would never ever go to FS except early day and while parking close. I too heard FS may be up for sale. Friend Shopping Center and Hanes Mall in Winston are the places to shop.

As for Oak Hollow Mall, the rebellious parents of North High Point and Jamestown boycotted that Mall. Poor Mayor Becky. She doesn't didn't take things serious enough while High Points School were totaling being screwed!

For years we in Greensboro's minority community have fought for (1) more political representation and (2) representation at the "top". Now, even though such representation has not be in power long--unfortunately, from mere appearance; it appears that for most poor, powerless (of all colors) and/or minority citizens, its the SOS! The "HEADS" (Mayor, Superintendent, County Commissioners, etc.) continue to "listen ONLY to themselves, their friends and the MONEY people--even though the lower half of the socio-economic citizenship have most of the problems. In other words we have changed "faces and races" and UNLESS this so-called NEW leadership is willing to accept the fact that "they don't have all the answers" and they are not GOD--then all the same problems will continue to dominate and get worst. The ONLY difference will be that we will have a minority at the top.
