Unreported rapes

This is from an entry about a week ago in reference to an investigative piece on unreported crimes at county schools by WFMY.

Debora,
You can view the interview and report on
2Wants to KNOW at www.digtriad.com.
One of the unreportted rapes was at Eastern, but has never been confirmed or denied by school staff. No one knows if it was reportted during school hours or just on school property and whether there was an arrest of if the charges were dropped. However, Brian could look into this.

So I asked school officials about this and this is the response I got:

Brian,
The last rape that was reported to School Safety by Eastern Guilford High School occurred on December 10, 2003.

Haley H. Miller
Media Relations Manager
Guilford County Schools
Department of District Relations

Not real informative. I'll keep plugging away at it.

UPDATE: According to the sheriff’s office there has been one reported rape at Eastern Guilford High on Oct. 5, 2006 since the one Mrs. Miller notes. However, the 2006 report was deemed unfounded by investigators and was not included in the sheriff’s office data nor the school’s. The report was made by a student.

So I’m not sure what you all have heard but it sounds like this is a case of bad information, not a shortcoming of the school.

Brian,
Please check with the sheriff on the last reportted rape at this address. It was in the report that Frank Meekins had for his first report.

the key to her response was "the last rape reported" -- the problem is that they are not being reported to the schools, just the law enforcements

Brian,

What we are saying is that it may be impossible to expect the sheriff report and the school report to be the same as Sheriff Barnes seems to think?

Especially if these numbers can include unsubstantiated reports that are made by individuals.

So are the schools intentionally hiding crimes on campus...I don't think this has been proven yet.
I do think there may be misunderstandings about what and how to document crimes in our school. I think this process could be improved on throughout Guilford County.

Different story....

In reference to the article about Charlotte teachers, I understand teenagers thinking their myspace is private property and have spent the last several years explaining to young people that the web is not PRIVATE...If you don't want your grandmother to read it, don't write it.

However, I do not understand adults thinking that they can use myspace as a private journal....

Teachers that think this way ....Should be fired!!
They are completely ignorant!!

There is nothing private about the internet.
Anyone can hack into these sights and marking something private does not make it so. I am a programmer and have proved this to my kids.

On the first job interview my son had he was questioned about his myspace/facebook account and they went out and reviewed it.........Don't let this be your resume!

Guilford County teachers beware... I know some of you believe the same way and have your own sites that kids can log into....

Brian .. maybe this can be your next investigation...

It was also bought to the attention of the reporting station that all the crimes being attributed to the Middle College at Bennett (public high school for girls) were actually crimes reported by Bennett College and some were even crimes reported by residents living in the adjacent residential area. This information has since been quitely removed from the website. Bad information distributed but no public correction.
