I wasn't incovenienced, but I'd much rather know the night before than to get a 6:30 a.m. automated phone call alerting me.
It was surprising how late the school system decided to close Monday and Tuesday, and to delay opening today, especially compared to all of the other schools and systems.
I would not want to be the one who makes that decision, though! I'm sure people are upset no matter what you decide.

It would be different if there was a question about what the weather was doing...but Monday and Tuesday's decisions should have been made earlier so that parents could make plans sooner.
Sometimes it is questionable...but this week was a slam dunk....
It is still dangerous on our campuses for students that have to change classes outside. Snow covered parking lots, wet sidewalks, wooden porches and steps are still a hazard for staff and students.

There is no excuse for the late notification on a 2 hour delay. The school system knew how low the temperature would be Tuesday night. Roads were still melting. It was a no brainer that there would still be black ice. Other systems made the decision early so why does it take GCS so long to make a decision?

There was no reason at all to have a 2 hour delay except that the officials would rather not have school than to have school. It cheapens education when the top officials continue to deny our children 180 full days of school. The inconvenience for the parents is not taken into consideration when deciding when to delay school.

RE delay:
There was a reason for 2 hr delay, I was on roads at 6:30 am and checking ice patches, yes they were real and yes there was a safety issue that 2 hours could truly benefit.
It was a questionable call though as same ice was existent at 10:00 pm and temperature was already well below freezing, ice was hard and temperature was still dropping. A 2 hr. delay could be initial call at 10:00 and possible cancelation could have been decided later in morning hours of 5:00 am. I try not to AC quarterback this much, but this was a rather poor execution of the right call.
We already have too many bus accidents in this county, safety should be call number one.
And yes, the wonderful 5:30am wakeup call by Nora Carr has reached truly finger nail on chalkboard feelings when followed up by my second identical message at 6:00am. I may yet get a hand gun permit, buy a gun and take my phone which is also my alarm clock into a gun range and be able to say I killed some time shooting the messenger! You would think our School Board could do better?

I am torn about the call from Carr. I am smart enough to check myself and then get to go back to sleep. I don't need her to wake me up not once, but twice as Garth said..however, and this is the biggie there are alot of parents that don't have a clue, about anything.. so probably best to let them know, but since my kids is in HS, his bus comes at 7:45, do I need a 5:30 call.. NO

Is there a do not call registry with the school?
I want calls from my school
...but weather cancellations at 5:30....
...then again at 6:30 are annoying.
...three mornings in a row....good grief!
I had three calls...two from nora Carr and a text
message from WFMY...
I think we have the technology for parents to be able to sign up for these calls if they want them
like News 2 allows you to sign up for a text message.
Matter of fact I would rather only receive a text message that I can read at my convenience.

Inclement weather is a no win situation for Guilford County schools.

Brian,
Why is there not a thread about this?
School crime up, suspensions down!
Posted on March 7, 2009 8:08 AM
I noticed Jennifer Fernandez wrote the article this morning on school crime. Brian - are you still there???
I'm not at all suprised by the report - crime is up, suspensions are down. Isn't that just the way Grier and the board wanted it - reduce suspensions - no matter what!
