Things that make me go -- bleeegck!

Five days into my goal to eat five to nine servings of fruits and veggies a day (per the rules of the Get Health Guilford challenge), I have discovered just how hard it is eat all those good-for-you things. It's especially tough because I am kind of picky. Berries always seem too tart to me. Citrus stuff is worse. Melon is OK, but my life does not provide free time for slicing honey dew. And frankly, I couldn't look at one more apple today.

In an effort to make sure I got the day off right, I tried my first V8. Can I just ask, how did this junk stay on the market for so long???

If you haven't tried it, it is kind of like cold tomato soup with notes of dirty feet and cut grass. I drank it all, mind you. I am committed to the challenge. But I am going to need to find better ways to get there.

Any suggestions of sneaky ways I can get in the fruits and veggies?

Sugar. Or, if you prefer, artificial sweetener.

V8, low sodium. Good stuff. Best had with coffee, just alternate sips.

Try its cousin, V8 Fusion. It comes in fruit flavors like strawberry banana, which helps me forget that it's got a serving of vegetables per glass.

Thank you! I was beginning to think I'm the only person on Earth that finds V8 appalling beyond comprehension.

The problem with fruit is that the best kinds are full of — you guessed it — sugar. I'm a big, big fan of fruit juice, which Kitty tells me is little better than Coke in terms of sugar.

Apples: Trying baking one. We've got a couple apple bakers we can lend you - it's a stone dish with a spike in the middle. Add a little cinnamon, and it's like pie minus the butter.

How are you on veggies?

Try smoothies -- just stay away from making the kind loaded with ice cream. I like making mine with a small to medium banana, a handful of frozen fruit (strawberries or mixed berry is my favorite), soy milk and a packet of Splenda. You can also sweeten it with a little honey. Yum! You can get about two or three servings of fruits per smoothie that way.

Do you like raw vegetables? You can buy single serving bags of pre-cut carrots and celery. I also like to cut up a cucumber and snack on that. Maybe try to eat a small salad before dinner? It always fills me up and I definitely eat less at dinner. But watch out for the dressing. Get a fat free dressing or just use a little oil and vinegar. :)

Look on the bright side. If the diet fails and you two become like two minor planets, you can move to Little Rock and fit right in.
Not that I'm one to talk.

What about an apple martini?

Vinny loves V8. I never understood it either. But I agree with Crystal...I think the best way is the small salad with dinner. Or have you tried dried fruits in your cereal? You can buy dried strawberries and put them in Special K or cheerios and they're yummy and very sweet. They always sell them at Whole Foods or Trader Joes or whatever health food stores you have in NC.

I actually like V8, but only in small doses. I second Tom on V8 Fusion: it tastes like fruit juice but also has vegetable juice in it. You might also look at trying other brands of carrot-based vegetable juices. I think carrot juice has a much less obnoxious flavor than the strong tomato-and-celery dominated V8. You could try mixing it with various fruit juices to sweeten it. But, as Chris said, the sugar content of most fruit juice is high and it lacks the fiber you'd get from eating the actual fruit, so it's an imperfect solution, no matter what Juicy Juice wants you to believe.
