The Rum Diary
Looks like Hunter S. Thompson's first novel, The Rum Diary, really is coming to the Big Screen.
The semi-autobiographical novel, published after Thompson became famous as a journalist and author of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, concerns his early days as a reporter in Puerto Rico.
Johnny Depp is reportedly playing Thompson, a role he lived with Thompson to perfect in Terry Gilliam's film version of Fear and Loathing.

Depp is OK, but Bill Murray captured the insanity a little better, dontcha think?

It's a difficult question.
As far as who was closer to what Hunter Thompson actually is like - the mannerisms, the voice, the whole thing -- no question Depp is better.
But I do agree there's something about Murray's performance in "Where The Buffalo Roam" that captures the SPIRIT so well.

Yes! Finally!
And I hope not to see Raoul Duke appear as Paul Kemp once The Rum Diary is done.

I have been to Churchill Downs more than once but never attended the Derby. ( My wife was born and raised in Lou-ah-ville )
The first Hunter Thompson work I ever
read was an article he wrote in 1970." The Kentucky Derby Is Decadent And Depraved ".Believe that's where the term "Gonzo" came from. I think a brother-in-law passed it along to me..
I didn't see Buffalo/Bill Murray but Dep was great in F&LILV.
It will interesting to see The Rum Diary and how Depp and the director treat Thompson's 1959 persona.
My favorite Hunter Thompson quote: "The only thing I ever saw that came close to objective journalism was a closd-circuit TV setup that watched shoplifters in the General Store at Woody Creek , Colorado "
