Who you gonna call? (Hint: someone else)

As a fan of the first two Ghostbusters movies, I hope I'm not the only one hoping they're not going to make a third.

Let's remember Ray, Winston, Egon and Peter as they were.

And let's honor them by creating new properties that are as good or better instead of trying to wring the last bit of funny out of them.

I actually hope this pans out. Normally my terror of the (greater) chance it sucks would outweigh my hope for it. But a good reunion-style movie? That would be the greatest thing ever.

Also, I've got high hopes for the video game that's been in the works a while now.

I am heartened that you hold out hope, but I guess I just have no faith that things like this can be good anymore. I don't remember the last time they revived a property I loved years later, did a re-union movie with the original cast and it was really good.

A few movies franchises that were not masterpieces but which I still loved:

Beverly Hills Cop - First one very funny, good stuff. Second one still funny, felt good. Third one a miserable failure.

Die Hard - First one a classic, second one kinda crap, third one better than second one, fourth one god-awful.

Lethal Weapon - First one best, second one funny with a good villain, third one not necessary, fourth one just shameful.

Indiana Jones - First one amazing, second one still very good despite the crap it gets, third one possibly my favorite, fourth one sort of like sleeping with an ex who's gotten a new haircut.

I feel like Ghostbusters fits in with the rest of these -- they're summer popcorn movies, but they're good summer popcorn movies. They don't take themselves too seriously, they deliver the goods. But when you keep them going too long they become self-referential, they lose their initial charm, ultimately you can only compare them to the previous installments and they don't quite measure up.

So I guess I worry that as much as I love Reitman, Murray and Akroyd I just wish they'd do something new and interesting together rather than dusting off their old jumpsuits.

The guys who wrote The Office are creating the screenplay for this. Not a bad idea if you ask me. A mockumentary might even be an interesting way to approach the material.

What's odd though is that the only Ghostbuster not coming back is Rick Moranis, who said he has already made enough money from his acting career and has decided to retire.
