My creeping dread: the new G.I. Joe movie

art_gijoe_wizard_regsize.jpg

Some interesting bits in this new trailer for G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.

Seeing Christopher Eccelson from Doctor Who as Destro is going to be kind of creepy.

But I still think it's going to be a train wreck.

The revelation that they're outfitting the Joes with what seems suspiciously close to Iron Man armor does not bode well.

I think G.I. Joe Resolute, the new webisode series by comics writer Warren Ellis, does a much better job revamping this property -- which, let's face it, is a little hard to revamp without hacking out massive chunks that make no sense or are just plain embarrassing when you're not eight years old.

Rapid Review: Batman - The Brave and the Bold

batman_group.jpg

The Cartoon Network's new Batman: The Brave and The Bold cartoon premiered on Friday -- and it's well worth checking out.

(Theme music owes a bit to The Tick, I think, but it's not that tongue-in-cheek.)

As discussed in this Wired interview, it's the first time in decades that we've seen a lighter Batman -- not the driven, disturbed and haunted vigilante of the breakthrough Batman: The Animated Series or the "Dark Knight" of the new batch of Batman films.

The show will team a solo Batman with a different DC comics character each episode -- and it looks like they're going to the back-benches with some of the people who will be showing up. The first episode "Rise of the Blue Beetle!" is light enough for kids, but it's not junk-food. Adult comic fans, sci-fi geeks and kids-at-heart of all ages will also enjoy the show's wit and imagination.

Reminds me a bit of what they did with Superman Adventures some years ago - taking essential elements of the property and telling really great pop stories with them.

Geek Tattoos

I don't have any tattoos, but I do love seeing other peoples'.

Wired has a great gallery up today with photos of geek tattoos they saw at this year's Comic-Con in San Diego. They're comic-book heavy, but there are also some Tim Burton- and Calvin & Hobbes-influenced ones.

Well Smurf my Smurf...

There is going to be a Smurfs movie.

No, really.

I can't decide if I think this is a smurfy idea or if it's going to smurf the big smurf.
