Death on the highway

"This guy killed two people, and he got five years," said the father of the victim of a high school student killed when she and a friend were sitting in a car on the side of the highway and another car ran into them. The driver of the other car had both alcohol and cocaine in his system.

The family is angry that he only got five years in prison for two deaths.

Should he have gotten more? Less? Just right?

Sure, the DUI laws need to be tougher, but this is another sad example of why our immigration situation must have immediate top priority for reform.

Certainly should have gotten more time and if he was a repeat offender maybe he should have been in jail. But the motive to have stricter laws on DUI as far as sentences handed down to someone charged with death or seriously injuring someone. But the laws don't need to be tweaked to make it harder on the person that has a few drinks and drives. Much of the law like many others are geared at creating revenue not protecting anyone, oh it's a nice dog & pony show, but most can see through the smoke screen. Unless you have the habitual offenders locked up, they are a threat, license or no license. A drivers license does not prevent someone from driving, and if they are already driving drunk then why would they be concerned with driving with no license. The same offenders are pretty much going to still be the same group of offenders regardless what the law is. You can change laws arrest more people, increase fines, and you can show numbers that can say basically anything you want them to say, but all you are really doing is allowing the government to raise more revenue while painting a picture that they are really doing more but really what they are doing is hassling the people that aren't really the problem. You have to face the reality of the real world, as long as there are people, people are going to drink and many are going to drink and drive. Don't think I am saying it's ok to drink and drive, if you do you are missing my point. It's just too often the so called fix just does not fix or address the real issue or get to he root of the problem.

Why is it not listed anywhere in the article that this person was an illegal alien? If he would've been rounded up and deported two legal citizens would still be alive today. I'm outraged by unneccessary loss of life due to an illegal alien not being deported. Isn't it time to do something about it?

I am very upset and my heart bleeds for the loss this family has had to experience. How is it that some people really get away with murder and others receive harsher sentences for the same crime...driving drunk and killing someone is the same no matter what the legal system wants to call it.. I agree with the family, tougher laws are needed. No matter what he took two lives.....now he gets 3 hots and a cot on our tax money. What a shame!!!!

I think it about time, That our so called government. And our legal system gets there head out of there you know what. And start deporting illegal alien out of our country. They come over here and drive illegal with no insurance and kill incessant people. And now they bring gangs drugs and target school children. They could take some of that 1.3 trillion dollars they wasted in Iraq and build a wall along the border of Mexaco and the good old USA. In then they would half to enter the Country through check points legally. Apply for a visa just like other people in other countries. And as far as getting the right sentence there is only one death penalty. He gave up his right to live when he got behind the wheel of the car drunk. And take the life of two incent people.

I will add to my initial post that indeed the illegal alien issue attributes to a large percentage of the crimes in this country and we need a government that is serious about getting a handle on this instead of helping this that help their bank accounts. What ever happened to "We the People" Anyone every heard of that? Do they still teach it in the schools? Or do they even teach History as it really happend or is it twisted history?

I actually saw this accident right after it transpired as I was heading to brunch that Sunday morning. It is very tragic and has become a theme all too common that illegal immigrants are getting behind the wheel without proper training.

This same instance has happened all over the country, from an illegal alien driving the wrong way down I-85 in Charlotte and killing a family to this situation and many others. The penalties have all been exceptionally lenient for homicide with a deadly weapon. Had a legal US citizen committed the same crime, I would wager they would have received a much harsher sentence.

He received the highest punishment possible under North Carolina law. The law has to be changed.

Of course he should have gotten more than what he did. I just turned 21 recently I dont see a problem with drinking responsibly but dont ever get behind the wheel to drive after drinking. Sylvester...was my cousin and I had just recently got back in contact with him...we hadnt spoken since we were kids.......and I feel really bad that he was taken away before I had a chance to get to know him. Also about 2 years ago...my best friends father was murdered and the person that did it only got 4 years in prison and it kinda hurts.. It feels like an insult...people just goin around making bad decisions and the family and friends are the ones left to deal with the ultimate punishment. The laws need to be a lot stricter with DWI or people are just goin to continue to do what they want.
