Teacher background checks
A man with a past history of assault is hired as a teacher. He is charged this week with assaulting a student. The school system's background check only goes back seven years. Is that enough?

What we will never know (the general public) is what precipitated this incident. In my past experiences in GCS classrooms, students were not allowed to leave class to "go to their locker." Most students carried their class supplies in a backpack or other such item.
I only wonder if the student left class without permission. Like the B.L. Smith HS incident, the "unsaid" things are greater than the "said" things. The current GCS administration is as secretive as the current administration occupying the White House!
As far as the 7-year limit on background checks, what more can be asked? While no one wants a dangerous person around (at any place or any time), when do we as society say that the person is forgiven and/or paid their debt to society?
I find Ms. Smith's comment totally out of context for this discussion (quoted in the article on 11/30). It was stated; "You wouldn't want a first-year doctor operating on you if he didn't have any experience — same for teachers — they have your children literally in their hands." This is asinine! Comparing a doctor/surgeon to a teacher is out of context. How is either of these to garner experience without someone being the "first" for either of these professionals to learn on/with?
I wonder just what kind of students Ms. Smith's child/ren are in school. I also have the same ponderings about the student who was "assaulted." However, those are things that will NEVER be revealed, how sad.

I agree with Darryl..what made these teachers "act out". Students are out of control, that's what! The teachers are afraid to speak up and the parents are afraid of their kids! They send these kids to school for hours for someone else to raise. I think that parents should support the teachers who must teach their kids...why did Mr. Bullard punch the student? Did he feel threaten by the student? Everybody knows that kids today don't have any respect for adults and most have not been raised to respect adults....teachers cannot teach because of the disruptions which prevents those students who want to learn, not to. I say the two teachers just took it back to the "old school way".

We are raising a bunch of soft, whiney, spoiled punks!!
I would like to know what the kids record was...but we will never find out.
If that was my kid, he would have got more of the same when he got home!!

As a former police officer and tactical security
officer who has to meet strict employment
standards to work in this field, I say that 10 years should be the standard. Anything past
10 years should not be used against the prospective employee at all ! This should include DMV, Employment, Credit, Medical, etc.

Mr. Bullard is a kind loving family man. I hear no one ask the question did he fell threaten or afraid? What does a 14 year old boy looks like today? In order for him to disrespect a teacher how is his behavior in the home. Seven is adequated enough for someone history and why should his past determine who he is today. If we judge everyone base on their past where would we be as a society today. Look at your past are you the same person.....Teachers need support from other teachers and parents. Students come to school to learn not to be discpline by the teachers or take up time from other students who want to learn and have respect for themselves and others. Dont JUDGE til you have the full story

I spent over 10 years in law enforcement with Metro Police in Nashville, TN and the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Academy before starting a background screening company. We work with a large number of school districts and partner with a multi-state insurance company that specializes in the school market.
First, 7 years is not a deep enough search schools or any profession. The Fair Credit Reporting Act does NOT limit the reporting of a criminal conviction to 7 years. The FCRA only restricts the reporting of "non-convictions". There are crimes that are more than 7 years old that will absolutely impact a school system's decision to offer employment- sex offender, history of personal violence, identity theft. etc. There are also crimes that may not impact the position. Our policy is to report everything we find in the courts to our clients and they have policies in place to determine what is acceptable and unacceptable. A person cannot be denied a position simply because they have a criminal record, that would be an EEOC violation. At the same time, organizations that work with vulnerable populations (elderly and children) need all of the information legally available in making a hiring decision.

Should a pre-k teacher's online activities factor into continued eligibility to teach and guide our young and impressionable Children? (sexually [verbally] explicit and immoral postings to a public-access website, frequently visited by kids)?
