Traffic safety

Greensboro is second best in traffic safety? Whoever decided that has never come into town on U.S. 220 during rush hour. Or tried to navigate Wendover-I-40. Or counted the number of people running red lights downtown. Or watched the cars whose turn signals must not work because they never use them.

On the other hand, I know not to drive through Research Triangle or through Charlotte even close to rush hour to avoid the parking lots that occur there.

But maybe that's just me. What about you? What's the worst traffic offense you see?

Having previously lived in the Charlotte area, I was astounded to read the report on Greensboro being second best in traffic safety. In my first 3 months here I was nearly collected in an accident on I-40/85 when someone decided to cut off a truck - not to mention almost being rear-ended by the 105lb woman driving a 5000lb SUV...by herself, but that's a debate for a different day. I see people tailgating others for absolutely no reason, I see many folks hogging the left-lane, forcing others into dangerous manuevers to get around them. Many folks try to drive in your blind spot, pace you so you cannot switch lanes, etc. One of the most outstanding errors I've witnessed was a motorist completely stopping traffic on I-40 because they were about to miss their exit. However, had they chosen not to be a left-lane hog, it wouldn't have been an issue in the first place!

In Charlotte, it certainly was not perfect, but on I-85 the majority of this crap did not go on. Very few people hogged the left lane, which resulted in fewer dangerous manuevers to get around slower traffic because, amazingly enough, the highways work well when used as they were designed to be.

Now, as far as the surface street traffic is concerned, it's much nicer here than in Charlotte, so kudos to the Greensboro city planners, engineers, et al. in that regard. On the whole, if the populous would maintain a consideration for their fellow motorist when commuting, most, if not all, of these problems could be avoided. Problem is, everyone has a sense of entitlement and "me-first" attitude these days, thinking that they're more important than everyone else on the road. Guess what? You're not.
