Highway improvements usually help temporarily, but in time the highways will always fill up with traffic. We should be looking at providing viable and safe alternatives to driving in the region. It's one thing to encourage people to ride a bike or use public transit, but when the bike trails are the only safe place to ride and those trails - and the city buses - don't go where people actually need to go then people are going to get in their cars and drive. Let's add bike lanes and improve pedestrian facilities and expand the bus system so that some of the existing traffic won't always have to drive everywhere. It'll leave more room on the road for those that do have to (or choose to) drive.
