Bomb scare

S & M Market is robbed so many times that the owner takes things into his own hands and hangs inert grenades in the store's windows. The police respond with the hazardous devices team, stop traffic from the nearby street and evacuate nearby buildings. The owner says, basically, oh, now you respond. Where were you when I was being robbed?

Is his anger justified?

The business's in that area N. Church & Pisgah Church Rd are getting robbed blind, seems like every other day. The Kangaroo, Gate Gas and others. I believe I read here the GPD has made at least one arrest. It's still the Wild West up here every day and night.

What business can continue to operate while being robbed 2-3 times a week. It's happening in this corridor. Then people wonder what happened to all the business's ?

I live in the area. The owner just put props in the window. As a result he may get some relief from the bad guys for a week or two because the GPD showed up. Congratulations Mr. Man. Keep up the good work.

While I'm glad that the GPD took a "better safe than sorry" attitude toward the grenades in the window, with all of the robberies in this part town I'm not sure I can agree that they're doing enough to make their presence know. Also, I agree with the other commenter that their seem to be robberies in this area every couple of days. I've quit reading about them in the news, otherwise I would not go to any convenience stores in this area.

Even a rookie can look at an empty grenade shell and tell it's harmless. Experienced bomb technicians could tell they were harmless in seconds.
The "frag bag" and all the hullabaloo were for the cameras, nobody actually believed there was any danger. Unfortunately, the "grandstanding" was disrespectful to a business owner, especially after police have failed in the past to protect him.
I would have been mad, too.

Let me just add Mr. Man you are a great American.

I agree with PL. In the last few months I find myself just driving by the intersection and not stopping in these stores regardless of the time of day. There's no question at all that the robbers know they can do whatever they want, whenever they want. Now Mr. Man fears the police. The criminals in the area sure don't.

Good for the store owner. If you want your loved ones and property protected the community has finally realized they must do it themselves. The Gboro police dept is to wrapped up in covering for there own they have no time for crime on the streets. Wake up Greensboro. Get rid of Bellamy.

What Police? Where Are They?

All the police must be eating down at the Krispy Kreme, cause they are never around when you need them

if only we had enough officers to put one in each store in the city.then we could stop all the robberies.and if only we didn't have 50 calls waiting to be answered.then we could stop all the robberies.my point exactly.its just not being realistic.

Why would anyone go into a store (Kangaroo Gas) at 8 30 pm and spend several minutes there stomping and terrorizing the clerk to near death if they thought the police would be anywhere around much less be concerned about the consequences ? It's like a mini downtown in this corridor.

There are reports all over the media that there are maybe 18 squad cars covering the city most times. What if someone goes to jail, DWI then there are even less. Its not rocket science to figure out that there's not much chance of getting caught.

At the emergency council meeting it should have been brought up the possibility of an emergency tax bill for each property owner. Say for me $75 or so. I would be glad to pay it. The alternative is being on the wrong end of a shotgun slaying at the Gate Gas Pisgah Church. There needs to be at least 100 new officers in the pipeline "now" to cover vacancies and retirements. Summertime will be here in just a few months as well as an increase in crime.

I agree. The city manager, police dept and council is severely bogged down in solving yesterday's problems. They will never get to today's at the current rate. The council is there to set policy, not to manage city operations. If the current managers can't or won't clear the decks then new managers need to be hired. New managers will insist they be able to clear the decks to be able to get anything done as far as the future is concerned. Albert Einstein said something to the effect that "You can't get out of problems with the same thinking that got you into them"

Mr. Mun is a good guy and I visit the store on the regular, but it's not the police fault he's getting robbed. Most of the stores here in the south are open to such things due to the way the stores are set up. Stores should have outside steel slide down gates to protect doors and windows...inside the store the counter should be boxed in with either bullet proof or very thick plastic windows and a slide box for money exchange. I don't blame Mr. Mun for doing what he did, but that will not stop the drama he's getting.

The Greensboro Police Department are getting hit on all sides - they're either watching something or someone too closely or they aren't ever seen.

Folks, use what's between your ears - how would you like to be a patron of the store when some idiot started playing with a grenade in a window the owner put up as a 'prop' only to find that it was live and it exploded? It's like hanging guns from the ceiling and having someone joke around with one aiming and pulling the trigger like kids (and some adults) are apt to do, only to shoot some innocent bystander because they 'thought' there were no rounds in the guns? How many times have we heard in the news or from friends that someone shot themselves accidentally while trying to 'clean' or 'clear' their weapon or how about the officer from Maryland that shot himself in the rear-end at the coliseum several years ago?

What the store owner did was stupid - plus, if the PD had to wait to speak to the owner due to the fact he (the store owner) cannot speak English, tough. Once you step on the great land of the USA, learn how to speak the language if you're planning on staying or starting a business. If you're here legally, that's a plus, too.

How about telling the men and women of GPD what a good job they are doing if you see them in your neighborhood, a restaurant while they're on their dinner break, or when you're walking around the coliseum or any place that has off-duty officers working security for them?

They put a badge on every day, kiss their husband or wife (maybe even children) goodbye, and no one really knows if they will be coming home after their shift. I retired from law enforcement and was engaged to an officer from another department for a short time. I pray every day that members of law enforcement, EMS, and fire departments have a safe shift. Unless you've been there, you really don't understand. Years ago, before I entered into law enforcement, I know I had an idea of what it would be like. I was wrong about 95% of it.

You may think you do because of all of the 'CSI,' 'Law & Order,' 'Criminal Minds,' and 'Numbers' television shows that are on... Folks, if identifying and catching suspects was that easy, the population in the jails and prisons would be bursting at the seams worse than they already are. Cold cases are very difficult too - not only on the family and friends of the victim(s) but on the detectives that got assigned to the case and couldn't close it. I'll bet you if you ask any retired detective if there's one case that still gets under their skin it's going to be that one kidnapping or murder that they promised the victim's family and friends he or she would find. Then, years go by, and the detective retires... I'll bet they can tell you the date of the murder/rape/kidnapping - it will haunt them until the day they die.

There are a few bad apples in every department - Greensboro has had their fair share - but 99% of the sworn and non-sworn members of that department have their heart and head in the right place - keeping the city safe and to protect it.

I do not live in Greensboro, I come threw the city twice a month. We always eat at the cafeteria on Wenover. On one of my recent vist, a man had his car broken into while he was eating, he asked to use the phone to call the police, a man told him it would take 1-2 hours for a police to come. We ate, left went up the road a few miles and there was 3 police cars sitting and talking. I am not implying the police were doing anything wrong. I have no idea, just looked strange. I also find it strange one would have to put bars on his store and have bullet proof glass. It also strange the lte ran today about guns do not protect you , and then runs this about a person trying to protect himself. Jaycee is right I have been forty years out of the army. This was all a horse and pony show. A blind man should be able to spot a phony gernade.
