Hazing

Do you think hazing has a place in high school sports? Does it promote team cohesion or is it mistreatment?

I've told my son he doesn't need to belong to any organization that requires him to do something that could endanger his life (or others) just to belong to their group. If he loses his life pledging a fraternity, we (his parents / family) would be so anguished.

Even on his football (or any sports) team, I would encourage him not to participate if his coach was abusive. There's nothing wrong with sweat and hard work to acheive a common goal as a team - but there is no need for hazing. Why do you need to humiliate other people to make yourself feel good?

Good natured teenage pranks are one thing, but binding someone in sexual positions with duct tape and photographing it doesn't seem that good natured to me.

Any person or persons, who are affiliated with any organization, and participates, engages, invokes, organizes, and promotes; the use of hazing should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

I remember my fraternity initiation. It was very humiliating, as well as life threatening at times. But when I became an officer of the fraternity, I took steps within the Inter-fraterntiy council, to ban any and all activities that relate, simulate, and or promote any type of hazing.

As far as a response to your question. Well, let's see...

Do you like feeces thrown at your face and peed all over your body? Will that make you feel a part of the team?

Do you like being "kidnapped", and being left out in the cold, only in the clothing you had on when they kidnapped you, and left you on the borderline of another state, and expect you to find your way back to your dorm? Will that bring cohesion?

Do you like being treated less than scum? I don't think so.

HAZING SHOULD BE OUTLAWED, AND OUTSIDE OF THE ASSAULT AND BATTERY LAWS WE HAVE. THE LEGISLATURE SHOULD ENACT A STRICT HAZING LAW.
