City Council
The City Council exercised patience and leadership as it refused to be rushed into judgment. The City Council failed to pull the trigger when it should have. The City Council set clear, fair, achieveable objectives for an employee as it should. The City Council fiddled while Greensboro...well, you know.
What's your take?
(Keep it on the issues without going into personal attacks. There's been plenty of Mitch bashing on the previous Debatable -- you've been there and said that.)

It's a good thing the Council isn't a NC Business where you can be fired at will. Johnson is a disgrace to this city. He is being manipulated by others who stand to gain from his ineptitude. In light of the information about the infamous "black book", David Wray was railroaded and deserves a full apology from the city, as well as back pay. As lifelong residents of Gso, we are looking to buy a new home in the next couple of years, and are seriously looking outside Guilford County. We've had enough.

The Simpkins PAC is STILL controlling this city.

The Forgiving Fantastic Seven – February 14, 2008
Having to order our city manager to do his job is a clear understanding that council member Robbie Perkins and the other 6 do not understand what is required by the People of Greensboro to do their jobs in a competent manner, not to even mention what is required of the City Manager. Thank God Rakestraw and Wade had the balls and desire to remove Johnson. This city is in sad shape and deserves better. Interesting how Johnson has been given 2 months to come up with a plan---Did not say anything about accomplishing the plan. Mitch Johnson said he appreciated the support of the council. News flash!!!! You do not have all the support of the council Mr. Johnson. Do you get that? Clearly you have not been doing your job Johnson. Pack your bags, clean out your office and do Greensboro a big favor and resign. Johnson you are quite lucky you job opportunity was not put up to a public vote. Assuredly you would be history. If I were the Greensboro Fire Chief I would go ahead and clean out my office. Johnson has already demonstrated the way he does things. Council, rest assured you can’t talk or bore this city to the point that you sweep all of this away due to amnesia.
Don’t worry Johnson, history will write that you are a hero of the City and you will probably get a street named after you. Who knows what the Forgiving Fantastic Seven will get?

Why does Johnson get another chance and David Wray didn't?

Yesterday Greensboro had HOPE, but that hope was taken away from us when the City Council voted 7 to 2 against the citizens of Greensboro.

I think the council acted appropriately, considering the witch hunt that seems to be haunting Mitchell Johnson.

Same old stuff. Melvin, and Simpkins PAC rule!
The citizens get what they deserve. Should've voted for the right candidates.
More of the same.

Anderson Groat: David Wray deserved second chance.
Sandra Anderson Groat is quoted in today’s N&R as stating, “I believe in my heart people deserve a second chance…”
Now assuming the quote is correct and that David Wray is “people” I would think she meant that for everybody.
Wasn’t she one of the 9-0 votes to support the manager’s decision on David Wray?
Oh I get it Sandra, just certain people deserve a second chance. I’m elated that you are able to make that distinction.

In business, you set S.M.A.R.T. goals for managers. Specific, Measureable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Obvisously, the city council has never heard of such business practices. None of what they require can be evaluated to a level of competence based on these principles. All Mr. Johnson has to do is say that he's doing "something" to address their concerns, and tell the council that he "feels" he's making progress. No results are needed on his part - just good-old touchy feely stuff that the majority of the council will accept. Bottom line - Greensboro citizens are going to have Mr. Johnson and his poor managerial skills for a long time to come.

I CONTINUE TO BE AMAZED THAT THE ELECTED OFFICIALS OF THIS CITY DO NOT RESPOND TO THE WISHES OF THOSE THAT ELECTED THEM. WHAT MUST BE DONE TO GET THEM TO RECOGNIZE THAT WE WILL ULTIMATLY HOLD THEM ACOOUNTABLE FOR THIER JOBS IF THEY DO NOT DO THEM NOW? mUST WE REVERT TO THE MEANS OF THE 60'S AND PICKET, DEMONSTRATE AND, HOLD SIT INS TO GET THEM TO REALIZE WE WILL NOT TOLERATE THE INEPTITUDE OF THE CITY MANAGEMENT ANY LONGER? THREE MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL WERE ELECTED ON THE PLATFORM OF CHANGE AND MOVUNG FORWARD. THE VOTE AT CITY COUNCIL WAS 7 TO 2. THIS IS A SAD STATE OF AFFAIRS FOR OUR CITY AND OUR HOME THAT THOSE RECENTLY SWORN IN ARE APPARENTLY ALREADY BEING INFULENCED BY THE "GOOD OLD BOY" NETWORK THAT HAS RUN OUR CITY AND COUNTY FOR YEARS. EVEN IF IT IS NOT TRUE, THE ELECTED OFFICIALS OF OUR CITY ARE SHOWING THEMSELVES TO BE UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF OTHERS WHO WOULD HAVE THEIR OWN INTERESTS PUT BEFORE THOSE OF THE PEOPLE. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. DO YOUR JOBS, PLEASE. DELIVER GREENSBORO BACK TO THE VOTERS AND REMOVE THE FACE OF SHAME FROM OUR CITY.

We need to recall the 7 and still fire the manager!

Well I am really confused.
The manager of Greensboro.. Budget of hundreds
of millions. Thousands of employees. Six figure salary.
One of his 30 day objectives is a plan to improve his delegation skills.
This is like a Marx Brothers movie.
Can I be the guy with the horn.
Honk Honk
I can imagine his review.
Plays well with others.
Table manners could use some work.

"In business, you set S.M.A.R.T. goals for managers. Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound Obviously, the city council has never heard of such business practices."..
Thats what all businesses claim. Most fail
However it sounds good.
They fake it also.
The people in our government (elected or employed)
are no better or worse than the rest of us.

I'm sorry the City Council didn't take a firmer stand against Mitch Johnson. There is no question that his removal would be in the best interest of Greensboro's citizens. The conditions he was presented amount to an insult to all of us; a city manager should not be cut slack for failing to perform at the minimum level of his position. I don't think we should have to settle for second or third string quality management.

Read the Chronology of the Black Book (http://greensboro.rhinotimes.com/Articles-i-2008-02-14-174524.112113_Chronology_Of_The_Black_Book.html)
I'm thoroughly convinced after doing so that Mitchell Johnson should be FORCED to account for what he did - in GREAT detail.
For me, to read this chronologically, makes even more sense that Wray was railroaded.

We do not agree with the Council's decision
to retain Mitch Johnson as City Manager. Among campaign promises made by the mayor and other council members was for change. Not dealing with problem does not take care of the problem. Mitch Johnson should have been FIRED.
