I wished this incident had never taken place. However, it did. I am so sick and tired of hearing about this!!!! Can't we make an effort to PUT IT IN THE PAST?
We need to move on with current issues:
homeless
people losing their homes
hunger
loss of jobs
diseases
education for all
no medical coverage

How in the world do people expect to be "free" when they keep going BACK to the past?

All involved in this incident were OUTSIDERS. Greensboro just happened to be the venue chosen by the CWP to stage their antics. It could have just as easily happened in Winston-Salem or Charlotte, the KKK would have shown up anywhere they were "invited". What has Nelson Johnson done for the Black Community in the years since? Other than run his mouth and posture? I don't know of any business that keeps records more than 7 years, so why would the police department keep boxes of papers for over 30 years?? It's over, people, move on!!!!!!!!!!

I wish the News and Record along with all the American media would ignor useless wastes of everyones time like spending 2 seconds on crap like this and cover something else that matters. why do I have to continue to go to the BBC again and again for news that matters?

Worthy of the FBI? Its not even worthy to be in the news. Only in Greensboro! I watched the Fox 8 newscast from 10-11 last evening and there was no mention of this story. Yet News 2 and the NewsRecord can't let it go. This only serves to divide, not heal. Again Sandra points out there was never a conviction, but never mentions there was more than one trial (at The Taxpayers expense) including civil rights violations and all were exonerated. Let this story die. It serves no purpose but to inflame!!

Does this mean that Mitchell Johnson has to go.

If the city won't investigate, the Feds should. Destruction of evidence is a serious matter. It's very disappointing to see citizens dismiss abuse of power and show such little curiousity about what was destroyed and why. Justice was never done in this case, the murderers still walk among us, and that matters deeply to anyone who cares about a civil society. It's a shame that there are so many white Greensboro residents who don't care about injustice against the black community. I'm sick of hearing the words "get over it." We should never "get over" injustice, wherever it occurs.

Question for Mr. Robinson.

Was the omission of any mention or elaboration on the rules and statutes regarding felony records disposal in the Binker piece(about the FBI etc) today by design or just shoddy journalism? How is somebody supposed to make any sense out of an article like this-I think the matter was even equated to a hate crime-crime of course implying a law was broken.

How can the reader ascertain if the law was broken if the paper doesn't say what law was violated?

John Robinson said:

Interesting question, Skeet Club. And difficult to ascertain, given that the city hasn't even said such files existed. The DA has said that tossing out the records isn't a crime, which we said in that story and which we wrote about in more detail on Saturday.

The president of the NAACP likened it to a hate crime, not us. Of course, he doesn't know whether it is or not, and is calling for the FBI to investigate.

Final answer: we don't know what law was violated, if any, and I don't think anyone else does, either.

"... Justice was never done in this case..."

The perpetrators were tried three times. Would you suggest a fourth trial? or a fifth? sixth? Maybe we should just keep holding trials until we get the results that Laura wants. Would you suggest the same multi-trial procedure for minorities accused of crimes against European-Americans? Of course not. And the FBI has already seen all the files. It would be different if the perpetrators had never been caught and tried, but that is not the case. Yes, Laura, you should educate yourself, then get over it. There are plenty of real injustices in the world; your time and energy would be better spent on those.

Things must be going pretty good if the NAACP top priorty is a 29 year old case.

Skeet Club Savage said:

Thanks John. Ah...if there is indeed a statute on the books, as indicated by other bloggers on other blogs, for record disposal, one would hope that it would not be "difficult to ascertain" . I was just suggesting that it would have been of interest to include it in the Binker piece and the only thing "difficult to acertain" is why it wasn't included.

Good wiggle. Will give you a 9.0

Put Nelson in Jail said:

What did Nelson do to attain the title "Reverend"?

Let's talk about "Reverend" Nelson Johnson
...a Communist Worker Party Leader
...organizer of a "death" rally among kid's playgrounds
...He provoked and communicated threats
...He was armed and dangerous...
...He provoked a riot..
...He should be in jail
...If anyone should be retried..it should be him...

Anybody can ask the FBI, SBI, CIA, etc to investigate. It's part of living in a free country. That does not mean that these agencies must investigate, nor does it mean that there is any substance to the charges.

I would be more interested in having the investigation move forward and the results made as public as the accusations. If these agencies chose to ignore the request, they should be asked to explain so that we can reach closure.

Even then I doubt that we will ever reach closure as long as there is a reporter or cameraman that will report without questioning motives or facts.

I fully support an investigation of GPD by the FBI and any other federal agency that chooses to participate, however, I want them to start their investigation beginning in 2002. I want them to investigate Project Homestead and the David Wray Fray as well. Let's have the feds investigate everything that has happened in GPD and the city administration for the last 5 years. Let's have the feds investigate Mitch Johnson, James Hinson, Julius Fillmore, Brian James, Tim Bellamy, etc., etc., etc.

I wish the news & record along with News 2 would get over the past and move on the problems of today. I will only watch Fox 8 and WXII 12 for local news. If you want to hear current news items then you had better change your channels!!!!!!

And if the FBI investigates and decides that there was no crime or even criminal cover-up? Will that be the end of it? I bet not. Now I know what Noriega buckled when "Achy, breaky heart" was played at full volume over and over again. Unfortunately, I'm not sure the good folks in Greensboro will, no matter how often the same song is played by Rev. Nelson et al.

Skeet,

In the story I wrote for Saturday I included information about records disposal, based on an interview with a state archivist. The state procedure is to dispose of criminal and internal investigative records after 20 years.

You can read that story here.

The Web address to a PDF of the N.C. municipal retention/disposition schedule is here.

BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH.

The NAACP, the SIMs PAC, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Nelson Johnson, Skip Alston, Butch Davis, Diane Bellamy keep spreading HATERED with their media driven rants. Why does the African American community continue to listen to these hate filled idiots? I guess the African American community really doesn't want to get along with everyone else. They would rather continue to divide people, by acknowledging the above mentioned people as the leaders of the African American race. I guess to be a "Rev." in the African American community, all you have to do is spout hatered.

I wonder what's REALLY at the heart of this game.

Is Greensboro supposed to operate on a different set of laws regarding the disposal of records than the rest of the state? No one even knows if the allegations made by the 3 local activists has any merit; and even if they DID, it seems the only possible violation that occured was the method in which the files were disposed of; no?

I guess if nothing else - it makes for entertainment here.

NOT AS DUMB AS THEY THINK said:

People get real. There is a real problem in the GPD, but it is not missing files. This is the old smoke and mirrors game to divert our attention
from the real problems, crooked cops, crooked manager, crooked DA. I hope the FBI, SBI, Attorney General, President, etc.all come and investigate, maybe somebody will discover what is going on in the present. Should have been on Florida St. yesterday and you would have seen what the GDP really do on the clock
while driving unmarked police cars. Yes GDP you are being watched.

The latest rumor is that the Charlotte Madame is heading to The James Hinson Magdalene Home for wayward ladies of the night right here in the Boro. Thank you for that update, Jennifer. I had read that, but was concerned that all the readers of today's article might not have.

p.s. could you unblock me so I can go on the Chalkboard again. I promise I won't say D--N (rhymes with the thing that holds back water ) or use other cuss words to offend you.

Thanks.
